Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor spoke at a press meeting on October 8, 2019, in which she hit back at the ex-governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten. In a speech on October 6, Patten described Lam as “crazy” to enact the anti-mask law if she was acting alone.

Carrie Lam didn't pass the mask ban on her own this time, a lot of Hong Kong people had been demanding for this ban for a long time. It's absolute madness for Chris Patten to criticize the law of HK without getting his facts straight. Now let's ask him what he thinks about Scotland's strong demand for independence.

It's not the problem whether Hong Kong have it or not. It's the timing of making the law. It sparks only more anger in people and let the protests escalate more. I mean what did the anti Maks law changed? It only brought more violence and more people than ever wear masks. So looking from a sociological point of view, the decision to introduce the law right now is the most irrational thing you could have done. If they would introduce it after the Protest it would have been fine.

@@wojciechhoppe456 The rioters got spoiled by the soft government. If the police used strong action at the very beginning of the violence, it will not get this bad. If same thing happened in US, the government will seal off the area and use military powered to pressure the protest to end. Check 'Democracy Spring', there were only 4000 people involved, but 1420 were arrested. 'Occupy Wall Street',780+ out of 2700 were arrested.

The unrest is also Patton’s doing before leaving Hong Kong by introducing laws that were in direct conflict with the Mainland. During the past 100 yrs under British rule there was NO DEMOCRACY or FREEDOM OF SPEECH for the Chinese citizens. EVERY single Governor during that timeframe was selected and appointed by Great Britain. Did Chinese citizens have the right to reject that appointment, NO. The judiciary were all British, the chief of police and any officer with authority were British, and its educational system and curriculum were British. Chinese students were never taught about their own cultural history nor how Hong Kong was taken over under duress. Overall students for 3 generations were taught a anti-China narrative and that they were far more superior over their Mainland counterpart. Is it no wonder that these people are sooo biased and racist against their own people? They won’t be satisfied until the city is burned down and destroyed completely making it look like a 3rd world city. Had these riots with this much violence and mayhem had occurred in any other country they would have been dead by now!

Did the British colonial government understand the importance of dialogue or give Hongkongers an opportunity to review through an independent commission of inquiry the 1967 HK riots which they suppressed, causing 51 deaths and 802 injured? As Carrie Lam rightly pointed out, what would the British government (or any other government) do in the face of such widespread violence and chaos by rioters for 5 months? There would most likely have been many more casualties and fatalities than in HK. (HK has no fatalities to date). So much hypocrisy and double standards by the West that it’s sickening to watch.

Patten came new to the area, but he rapidly acquired firm views. His approach reflected the assertive, post-Tiananmen mood in the media and parliament: the view that Britain had been too soft with China and that rapid democratisation in Hong Kong was essential if liberal values were to be protected there after 1997. There were no doubt other considerations. As a rising politician, he had his name to make. A tough rearguard action, without glory, which was all that the colony had in fact to offer, was not an attractive option. He made instant democracy his slogan and proposed changes to Legco constituencies which would have the effect of enfranchising almost all the working population. He hoped the Chinese would agree to these reforms; if not, he was ready to implement them unilaterally. He presumably calculated that, after initial objections, Beijing would come to acquiesce in the changes and that Chinese warnings were bluff. This proved a fatal miscalculation. Not surprisingly, given the background, the Chinese objected strongly to his plans. They saw them as a U-turn in British policy and a breach of the constitutional and political settlement enshrined in the joint declaration, the agreement on directly elected seats and the Basic Law. They were particularly incensed by the public nature of his proposals and the refusal of their request for private consultation before he went public. They repeated their warnings of the effect of unilateral action. Several months of angry exchanges ensued, followed by some six months of unsuccessful confidential negotiations. Eventually in June 1994 the Patten reforms were pushed through Legco, with the opposing amendment being defeated by just one vote. Predictably, Beijing replied in August with legislation confirming its intention to terminate the Hong Kong legislature in July 1997. ~ www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/magazine/losingtheplotinhongkong This is the full article. Patten left a mess because he thought of Britain First. He gambled on China backing down and left administrators instead of leaders to deal with the landmine that was Western Democracy. I do agree with him that there should be dialogue between the HK Government and the peaceful protestors. There is also a need , as he says, for the peaceful protestors to condemn and distance themselves from the violent radicals who have their own obvious agendas.

@Hui Wu You seem to underestimate CCP's intelligence (and overestimate yours). "100% mainland china system" will immediately rid HK of its status of global financial center (ranking 3rd after New York and London). HK will overnight descend from a cash cow to a cash black hole to China. No other Chinese cities can replace HK as they all lack the credibility of western-styled rule of law. Equally important is that RMB is NOT a world currency. CCP does NOT allow free exchange of RMB as Chinese people does NOT have much faith in it. CCP wants to have tight control of Chinese capital to prevent capital flight.

Hypocrite start talking nonsense , out of office, don't talk too much. When in office, why not help the people instead of colonizing them
