Honda Accord Instrument Cluster Bulb Change 1994 - 1997

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here I show how to remove the instrument cluster for 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997 Honda Accords, and how to change some of the bulbs. I had couple burnt out ones, but because it's such a pain to get this particular cluster out I decided to replace a bunch of them all at once.

    Thanks for posting this helpful video. I have one bulb burnt out near my fuel gauge. Been like that for over a decade! :) I wanted to change all the incandescent bulbs to LEDs. I believe the generic bulb spec for these are T10 for the large ones and T5 for the small ones. NOTE: There are two more bulbs at the front of the gauge cluster. They produce the blue ambient light in front of the faces of the gauges. You can see the sockets on either side of the front of the assembly as you install and remove the cluster. It's recommended if anyone does this job, like timing belts....once you are in there, just change all the bulbs to new ones. BTW, there is a small bulb inside the hazard switch, that should be changed if your hazard switch doesn't light up at night. There is a small bulb in each of the switches that is user replaceable should they be out at night. Lastly, the ashtray and cig lighter socket have their own light bulb too. The cig lighter ring should glow blue at night if working. HTH for all 5th generation Accord owners.

    If you came here because you couldn't see your needles at night, those are two bulbs on either side of the front and you can see one of them at 9:19 above the tach. I don't know what Honda part # that is but I used two 2721s and it worked fine. Great video.

    Thanks man. Exactly same problem in my case. I wish google search would've directed me at your comment. I'd have known this in seconds. Surprising thing is why did both bulbs go out together for me. Or maybe they went out sequentially, but I didn't notice the reduce brightness.

    Successfully accomplished this task by watching this video. Thanks. By the way, if the bulb doesn't come off the black socket, stick some scotch tape to the bulb for leverage and pull. There's a youtube video on this. I didn't bother putting back the 2 screws just above the radio. Next time if there's a need to change the bulb, no need to remove the radio set and all. The front panel is sitting tight with the remaining 3 screws.

    Thanks a lot for this! I needed it. The SRS light means that there is an issue with the airbag. There are many tutorials available online to reset it using the "MES" connector which is located on the bottom left of your coin pocket. You'll have to remove the coin pocket part of trim to reach it better though!

    Great video, very detailed. I'm concerned I may have to do the same thing as tonight i saw that my dash lights aren't coming on anymore. Little backstory, I had an audible "buzzing" in the cab every time i tried to use the turn signals and or the hazards. Thought it was the turn signal relay but it turned out to be the hazard switch. Sixty some odd dollars later I have blinkers and hazards working but now no dash lights. The fuses appear ok, so I was wondering, you mention a three wire "connection" by the hazard switch. Any idea if there is anything more than the just that one "connector" I can't imagine that the replacement switch is the culprit, but I am thinking maybe it is. Anything other than tearing the dash apart that you can think of to check before I go to that extreme?

    Tails G **edit** when you turn the key to the last position just before “turning it over”, you do see the seatbelt and door indicator lights come on on the dash. After you start the car I didn’t see any dash lights (including the “gear” position indicator illuminate, BUT the turn signals indicators do come on when you engage either the right or the left turn signal (which is at least something). Could it be a fuse for the computer or the dash lights rather than the cpu module being shorted out? Which fuse would be for said backlights for the dashboard?

  • @tailsg8594

    @tailsg8594

    5 жыл бұрын

    I wouldn't think it would short out that easy, once the cables are detached and you have the console out, there won't be any remaining energy unless there was some lingering in any capacitors. I would try removing it again with the battery cables off this time, tear it down and reassemble it to see if maybe there is anything out of place or out of the ordinary

    @@tailsg8594 I transferred the bulbs from my old cluster (that I know worked) to replace the ones on the new cluster that didn't. I'm guessing they are regular bulbs. Everything else works. It's just my fuel gauge that is stuck above full and the d4 light turning on for a second when I turn the car on. I'm researching if the d4 light is supposed to turn on for a bit when turning on the car and some 5th gen Accord people say it's normal. That if the light stays on for extended time or blinks, then there is problem with the transmission. I also noticed I hear a click, like a relay click when the D4 light turns off. Does your D4 light turn on for a bit along with the "P" & other lights when it's doing a system check? I will disassemble again and try another light bulb for the D4 light and reposition the fuel gauge. When I screwed the circuit back, one of the screws that holds the fuel gauge did not thread in. Since I just bought this used cluster, I thought maybe it came like that. BUt, I must've moved it off center. I appreciate your help bro, subscribed.

Now, if you move your finger to the left, over the black plastic, right in the middle (between your thumb and the shadow) there's a small black switch. My gas light and the whole speedometer doesn't light up how do I change the light bulb

  • @tedhohl5573

    @tedhohl5573

    Жыл бұрын

    Note that the Low Fuel light (if that is the gas light you were referring to) does not illuminate momentarily on start like some other lights do. In my dash (95 Accord) I tested the low fuel bulb with 12v and it does illuminate, so the bulb is good (in mine). As for the lack of illumination for the speedometer, there are four obviously larger bulbs (seen in the video) on the outer layer that illuminate the gauges (it backlights them). The replacement bulb is a Sylvania 2821 (12V, 3W). This matches the original spec, and I can verify that their illumination matches the original (I have a mix of 28-year-old original Honda bulbs and new 2821's in my instrument cluster, and when testing them you cannot tell the difference in brightness). These four bulbs have a blue sleeve over them to tint the color to blue. I have heard them referred to as bulb "condoms," which I think is as good an analogy as any. When replacing one of these big (T3 form factor) bulbs, you should first remove the blue condom from the original bulb. This was very challenging as it took me 10 minutes and lots of patience, because the condom is stuck to the glass bulb from being baked on for years. It can be done with patience and go SLOW! to keep from tearing the condom much. I say much because in the two bulbs I replaced, both of them tore the condom a little. Just carefully reuse the condom on the new 2821 bulb and you should be good to go. If just the speedometer is dark, you may only need to replace one bulb to fix it. Each of the four big bulbs is dedicated to backlighting a specific gauge (left-to-right from the drivers position: temp, tach, speedo, fuel).
