    Seriously, the party pissed the elves off, thought that they could walk right into their land without issue, setup no guards, and then got attacked. They made these very poor choices that made this situation and the elves acted intelligently by attacking at the best opportunity. It's how any sensible person would act.

    Third story: I'll admit that I'm a bit of an old school style GM, but I've never been the kind of GM that wants to go ridiculously easy on a party that is making patently stupid decisions. I firmly believe that the rest of the world should react in a fashion that makes sense relative to the nature of the world, the personalities of the NPC's involved, and the actions of the party. The rest of the world shouldn't all become stupid because the party chooses to take stupid actions. This destroys immersion and makes the world less believable.

    Letter writing is probably the best option if that guy blocked them everywhere, but that cracked me up because I had a a game crash and burn once where the group broke apart, two of the players got divorced, and my ex went on a long rant threatening to "write me a strongly worded letter." That letter never arrived, by the way, but the note that they wrote their GM a letter just reminded me and I was very amused.

    Story 3, who's at fault necessarily? Not the DM. The players acting murderhobo and then going to the most sacrosanct place for the Elves was a guarantee of a TPK, given their party comp. He could've put some warnings in, sure. But it's also totally in line with Elves, as traditionally depicted, to be the sneaky type - and if murdering you in your sleep is more effective than a drawn out battle, in a forest, with Fireball-happy wizards that can cause potential damage to the Sacred Tree? Yeah... Quit whining about DMs when they play around the group.

    I agree with you. Any player with experience would have seen that coming. I have never played in a party, nor ran a game, where the players didn't take security into consideration. To not post a watch, lookout, guard, what ever you want to call it, in hostile territory while everyone went to sleep? They were definitely asking for it. Normally I would give players hints and chances. But this group had already had that with near TPK's against the elves already. And it was time to let their bad ideas have consequences. I will bet that at least one of the players will never NOT post a guard again.

    @@davidtherwhanger6795 Exactly. From the perspective of the Elves, it just makes too much sense - off them quietly and without much commotion and collateral damage. I remember hearing once on a KZread video, I can't remember the source, but paraphrasing was: "If the "bad guys" are playing to win, they're going to do whatever they can to survive, and defeat the party." Ambushes, deception tactics, attacks while you're asleep or in camp... It's all in line for what someone who -wants- you dead, and is putting thought into it would do. Rather than generic mustache-twirling enemy which exists only for XP.

    For that second story, would have been the perfect opportunity for a Surprise round since they WERE ambushed while sleeping. In that first round of being unable to do anything, they get pretty banged up right from the get go, and have to frantically try to survive for the rest of the combat. With a horrific start like that, the TPK is still likely to happen, but at least the party was 1) given a chance to get out of it and 2) felt the repercussions of their recklessness. Definitely would have been how I'd have handled that situation. Though I would have thrown in a lot more "Are you sure?"s beforehand so they can't get mad at me for not warning them lol.

    For the one of the party party of frail spellcasters: what's the harm in playing it out? The DM apparently rolled to hit and damage and did not take the "Rocks fall, everybody dies" approach, why wouldn't he ask for initiative after a turn of surprise, as it is normal to do? Spellcasters have many tools to fight or to flee. Let's say the situation is reversed, and the party surprises an enemy camp. The DM would still ask for initiative, to roll for damage etc.

  • @davidtherwhanger6795

    @davidtherwhanger6795

    That depends on if there are survivors after the initial attack. Initiative is done, with disadvantage on the side getting attacked IMHO, after the first Surprise round is done. If everyone is already dead on that side, no need for initiative.

    @@davidtherwhanger6795 I was just surprised the DM switched to narration that fast. If I was in his campaign, I would be asking for the math that lead to my death. I'm not a fan of your take on the Surprise Round rulings. Getting hit with a surprise round AND getting disadvantage on initiative checks pretty much guarantees the death of the party. They would be prone and unable to take any actions, while their enemies are all fully awake, fully equipped and probably with some buffs cast upon them. Having some of the enemies take 2 full turns before being able to act is overkill. I once DMd a fight where the PCs were betrayed by their allies. 4 level 3 PCs vs 4 CR 1/2 monsters (2 Thugs and 2 Scouts), a Medium encounter. The enemies didn't even have a full surprise round, they were just holding the Attack action. The players rolled really well and I rolled like shit, and still, one of the PCs briefly went down to 0 HP before getting healed. Action economy is king in 5e, and even the most unassuming monster can destroy a party with 2 full rounds of preparations

In hostile territory that they knew they had potentially warned the occupants they were coming. Or should have known after asking an elf where the Sacred Tree was. If the party had been awake, or even one of them. It would have been different. They would have gotten Passive Perception checks to see if something was off to them. They would have been able possibly not have disadvantage on initiative as they would not be waking up as well as trying to figure out they were under attack from their guard or alarm warning them as soon as the attack started and not after the arrows had already made it to target. They decided to sleep, all of them, unprotected in hostile territory. I could not then act as if they were awake and actively looking for danger then can I? I normally give players warnings and breaks. But here they already had two near TPK's, going into a situation with even fewer numbers than those previous encounters, and did nothing to protect themselves. They had no sense of danger what so ever. Expecting to just murder hobo everything without any consequence for their actions. It was high time they learned you can't just kill everything and nothing bad will ever happen to you.

    With "Sleeping TPK", it sounds like the DM was mostly at fault for how things went. He allowed everyone to make the same kind of character so there wasn't enough balance in the party, then he took away the party balance he had to create with NPCs without hints or explanations of what to do about it, then didn't do much to tell the players they were being stupid going off to the middle of enemy territory to destroy something the enemy would protect in force. It sounds like the players were clueless about the entire game and just muddling their way through. I wouldn't be surprised if the players were actually relieved that they all suddenly died so they could do something else. For the last story where the group was playing the last two games of the campaign, it sounds like the DM was trying to kill everyone. "Everyone died, campaign over".

    First Story - While the problem player did indeed suck really bad and I have no sympathy for them at all, I think there could be a lesson learned for the GM here. "You don't decide there's a tree there, that's MY job." May I suggest that...maybe it's not? While I doubt that it would work out in this case with this player, an amazing trick I've learned playing the FFG Star Wars RPG (a much more open ended game than D&D traditionally is) is to allow the players to dictate what happens - to an extent. If they want something to be there, why not? Maybe that will lead to something interesting happening. You just have to roll with it amd improvise. Plus it makes the players 100% more invested in the story, and it gives you a better idea of what they want out of the game. Invested players are happy players, and happy players make for happy GMs. Of course, you need good players too to pull this off. Obviously. But it's good advice and has really helped me a lot.

    I'd put a slightly different spin on that, personally. As a DM, you should strive to never directly say: 'No, you cannot do that'. Unless the request is outrageous or ridiculous. In this case, I would have said: 'As you scout the area for a suitable tree to chop down, you notice there are no suitable candidates. While there are a few small, skinny trees, based on your existing experience with lumberjacking and carpenting, it takes you but a glance to realize that none of these would be fit to build a table out of.' If they insist to keep looking for one, you can ever so slightly bend the rules a little and go: 'As you keep searching for a tree, there is a gnawing insistence at the back of your mind that reminds you that you came here for a different, more pressing reason. Perhaps this search for a suitable tree to make a table out of can wait until another time.' If they still insist after that, then you've already given them two chances to turn back and re-focus and you're within your rights to say: 'No, you can't do that. There's no fucking tree. Do something else or leave.'

(unless...I dunno...maybe a mysterious tree being in the middle of somewhere where it has no right to be might be interesting...hmmm...) But my original point still stands, I think. The other comment said it well, "Never explicitly say you can't do that." And naturally everyone's style will be very different. I used to be super rigid in my GMing, and it gave me a lot of problems. Then when I went far more loose and relaxed it made a big difference. So I'm just saying it worked for me.

    7:34 Ok I'm just going to say this. Having romance between player characters is super akward. I'm sure there are people who could pull it off but I certainly wouldn't be able to.

    Sleeping TPK DM is a wiener. Let the players kill all the elves.
