Homeschool curriculum choices for the 2020-2021 school year revealed! This will be our 18th year of homeschooling, and I'm sharing our curriculum plans for this year for elementary through high school.
This year we're using a few new things as well as things we've used in the past, with a focus on Charlotte Mason and classical style homeschooling, including plenty of living books and hands-on learning.

You’re amazing!!!! 18 years!!!! Would you consider filming a video about the common struggles and how to overcome in the beginning of the homeschool journey. I find it very stressful, and often feel defeated.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Veressa! All the glory goes to God. It's amazing how quickly all those years seemed to go by. I know it can be so overwhelming, especially when you're just getting started. And I know there are so many different struggles that can arise, depending on your particular circumstances. Here's a book to consider: amzn.to/3dFUw7l It's one that's often recommended for new homeschoolers. I'll definitely add that video topic to my idea list for the future.

Thank you! We just found a local teacher for her, and they used these accelerated piano books (since she was older when she started learning to read music): amzn.to/2OwzhhV We haven't used a formal computer programming curriculum. My dad was a programmer, so he taught my son quite a bit. He learned how to use a Raspberry Pi and an Arduino (you can see that here: amzn.to/3eBWUjC ). He also used some DK coding for kids books, and then read through several of my dad's books on different programming languages as he got older.

Hi I hope you get this message. I really am interested in knowing how the MFW US history has gone for your high schooler. Would love a review video! Cannot find anyone else on here for that year. Thanks

We've loved using MFW US History for high school! We're not quite finished yet, but we're planning to go on with the next MFW US history for next year (it's broken up into two years). The high school program is pretty rigorous but very thorough and well organized. It does take awhile to complete each day (as would be expected for high school), but they work independently at this level. They can just look at the guide and know exactly what to do each day, and they have all the materials to complete the assigned work. I've been very happy with the program. Hope that helps!

Hello! I’ve been thinking of using the EXACT same two curriculums for my youngest and High Sxhool students. I know most of the HS work is independent, but can you tell me approximately how much time you spent helping/assisting/discussing with your HS student each day or week? Im wondering if I will have enough time to manage my younger and still give enough time to my HS student. Thanks for the video!!

We really enjoy MFW. How much time you spend with your high school student depends greatly on the individual student. I have a child who needed quite a bit more accountability and help even during their high school years. And I have another child who does all of their work independently and I don't spend much time at all assisting them (even though I am available for help and questions). So, it just depends. If your high school student does well with independent work, they can do much of it on their own. The MFW recommendation for high school work is: "The student completes most work independently; the parent/teacher checks that daily work is completed. On Fridays, the student and the parent/teacher have a conference to discuss the week’s topics and check that the week’s work has been completed." So much depends on the child's learning style and personality. I give my current high school student her MFW guide for the year (after acquiring the needed materials and organizing everything), and she does most of it completely independently. The first few days of school we go over the manual, the books, and the weekly schedule. I spend some time with her answering questions and laying out the program, and then she does most of the work herself. Her dad and I are always available for questions and help. But some students will need a bit more guidance and time. Hope that helps!

Have you always used teaching textbooks? I was wondering if your older girls continued education and if you felt like Teaching textbook prepared them for college. I came across a blog and it stated it was too easy and did not pass entry exam for college? What are your thoughts?

This is our 8th year with Teaching Textbooks. My younger ones have used TT ever since 3rd grade. My older girls haven't taken the college path at this point (they may in the future-one is considering it, and the other is making plans for nursing school), but I believe if they choose that route, they'll know how to study for the exams and succeed. My friend Amy uses TT and has a son who has done well in college (and graduated with a 4.0). Her article on using TT might be helpful. www.raisingarrows.net/hate-homeschooling-math/ Also, TT offers trials of every grade so you can try it and see if it's a good fit for your child. Hope that helps!

Hello and welcome! The laws are different in every state. I'd recommend checking out your individual state laws. I also highly recommend HSLDA. You can check out state laws and recommendations at their website here: hslda.org/legal Hope you have a great homeschool year!
