I’ll go first:
I’m Christina. I’m married to my best friend, Seth, we have 5 kids (ages 3, 4, 7, 11, & 15), and love our family, Jesus, and adventuring together.
We are passionate about being counter culture, including alternatives to traditional schooling. I have experience as a public school teacher, private school teacher, and homeschool mom!
I love the Charlotte Mason education approach, and many others, but I’d say we are more of an eclectic homeschool-mixing the different aspects of homeschool styles that we love-living books, literature-based learning, Montessori, nature study, and so much more!
Whether you are considering homeschooling, new to homeschooling, considering alternative ways to educate your child, or just looking for some encouragement and inspiration for your motherhood journey, I hope you feel welcome and encouraged here 🤍

I'm glad you are.talking about the not doing dual enrollment with high schoolers. We have not done dual enrollment with our kids. I have 21-8. We kept all our kids together for morning time even history. My 21 year old had no problem getting into college and is a firefighter now, my second son got a huge academic scholarship without dual credit and will be leaving for university in the fall. We are very CM in style.

I absolutely love your non-traditional approach! We are newer homeschoolers, but I feel I have come a long way in a short time with ditching the public school mentality. Anyway, next year I will have a 10th grader, 8th grader and 4th grader (all boys) and I can’t wait to go where the Lord leads in our home and our learning. Thanks for this video. ❤

I love your videos. They are so helpful. My soon-to-be 16 year old will be in 11th grade and she has loved her independent courses this year, but wants to learn family style again. It gets hard in the high-school years keeping them with us and it feeling like enough. We did Gather ‘Round 2 years ago, but after praying to God about it I’m not sure this is the direction to go for us. I’m looking into Simply Charlotte Mason, tweaking AmblesideOnline to a more family style method, and your nature study units for science. For math for my youngest two we are using Math on the Level (highly recommend!) and we use LOF for my high-schooler. There are so many options out there and it can be overwhelming. I need to rewatch your videos on those nature studies to see if they are enough for science for all grades or if I will need to supplement. Thanks!

I used the Good and the Beautiful high school language arts with my son very loosely. We did level one for 10th grade since it was our first year homeschooling, plus I added in a few other books that I thought he should read. For 11th grade I bought the pdf version of both the HS2 and HS3 and then picked and chose what I wanted him to do. Plus we read other books- you can get great individual book studies on Teachers Pay Teachers. For chemistry my son had a set I bought him from Home Science Tools. It was so cool! And it came with a guide for how to do the experiments. It was called a MicroChem kit. He did that along with Apologia Chem, but I think you could add it in with TGATB and it would be great for him.

Whenever I hear you talk about the different things you are doing, I feel like it’s the same as us! Very eclectic, CM-y, unschool-y, unit studies, living books, etc. we are not done with several of our “books” (like ELA) because we do so many other things. The books are more or less a fill-in for when we are not doing a unit or something like that. Lots of field trips and just being together. However, I don’t do a morning basket and I’m feeling like maybe we should… we have a routine though. I forget… have you spoken about summer plans yet?

We do high school science the exact same way. I do a unit and add anything extra I feel the high schoolers need. It is to grow a love of learning not cramming to check off of lists. And also knowing how your child is bent. We didn't do past Algebra 2 either!!!!!

@@RootedHomeLife I don’t blame you! We are pulling our kids from public school one by one- at 4/5th grade we start them so next year our second oldest daughter will be home with our oldest. I hope they can re build their bond using this and more time together. Our oldest boy will be going into 1st grade. We talked about pulling him next year also. Unsure it’s the right time for him though since he has some speech issues that they can better help him with and I am not sure I’m good enough to teach him to read. This past year was our first year homeschooling our oldest for 5th grade.

I also agree that 15 might be too young for dual enrollment. Something to consider and pray over is the maturity and spiritual foundations/fortitude for early college. However, what some families might not know is that dual enrollment can be a hybrid option. My soon to be seniors are still home 5 mornings out of the week and have more “unschool/homeschool learning” than they do college courses. Dual enrollment can also benefit larger families in the cost of college. More importantly, a start to their young adult lives without student loan debt.

I keep my high schoolers' learning family style as much as possible. The only things that are independent work are math and LA. EVERYTHING else is family style. I see the benefits of it if you have a college bound child, but I feel it defeats the purpose of homeschooling, or atleast our purpose which is to deciple our children as long as we can without outside influences, so when they do go out, they have a stronger foundation.
