    Love the entire broadcast!!! In the beginning, there was a report on the inside of the pre-fight stuff that goes on and it was fascinating. Bob Arum on a shoe box sized Gordon Gecko cell phone and I'm pretty sure the reporter who was being interviewed at the beginning of the recording was a very young Sam Donellon of the Philadelphia Daily News. Sam still writes for the Philly paper. I also wonder how long Jim Lampley was dying his hair. All of a sudden, Jim went very gray!

    The 90's was the best heavyweight era ever, by far. Better than the 70's. and Holyfield fought them all. He fought Bowe 3 times, Tyson twice, Lewis twice, Moorer twice, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Ray Mercer, Buster Douglas, Bobby Czyz. That's just who he fought in the 90's. He fought Dwight Muhammad Qawi twice at Cruiserweight in the 80's, plus he fought Michael Dokes, Carlos de León, Pinklon Thomas. And even in the 2000's when he, was way past his prime, he fought John Ruiz 3 times, Hasim Rahman, James Toney, Chris Byrd, and perhaps most incredibly is he probably got screwed out of a 5th Heavyweight championship when he fought Nikolai Valuev for the WBA title. Many thought Evander won that. Holyfield was 46 years old in that fight, which would've made him the oldest heavyweight to ever win a title. And Valuev was 49-1 at the time and was 7 feet tall and 325 pounds

    Yeah, after the Tyson "off the couch for a paycheck" disaster, he actually did it properly, Foreman style. Foreman and himself proved that belated comebacks can work, but you must reboot entirely, as if its a new career all over again. Start with weaker opponents and work your way up, adjusting to your different physical capabilities this time round.

    Yes You are right. Admire of Tyson had to watch that match between Tyson and Holmes in detail through again, and understand why Holmes did not manage the last 10 seconds of the 4th round. He was surprised by an infight uppercup. But the great giants of the Ali era rise again. Holmes was cunning enough to protect himself, but when he had to hit the last crucial defensive shot with the right in the ring corner, his arm is on the wrong side of the middle ring rope and his defense is totally open and Tyson knocks him out. Also note that Holmes had not boxed at all before, had in principle put the gloves on the shelf, yet he can keep Tyson at a distance. It's not given Tyson had won that match, just look at the Buster Douglas match, Douglas as there was no resistance for Holyfield, who later beat Tyson twice.

    HBO commentating crew has no clue what they are talking about, Holyfield looked like he was fighting for his life out there, Georgie Benton at one point remarked to Holyfield that he made him look like he was still champion... Holmes didnt look bothered at all, sure, if he had showed up in much better shape, he could have let his hands go more, but he made Holyfield work hard, Evander looked tired, and beat up throughout this fight and Holmes actually was very effective in many spots, but at 42, his shape, his ability to let his hands go werent the same and Holyfield was as ever and typically determined.. a great fight and Holmes really showed why he is special and an all time great, imagine if he fought Holyfield in his prime, he woulda won the fight

    Holmes is an all-time great Heavyweight, but: That elbow to the head and nasty cut clearly affected Holy, and I think that's a big part of why he looked beat up. But I agree, even though he threw tons of punches and had a lot of movement, he looked tired the whole time and not nearly as fast or sharp or on balance as he did in all his other fights, and just months earlier against George. Holy was only 2lbs heavier than he was against George but he looks way bulkier and muscle bound - even way more so than he did in his very next fight against Bowe. So, I think it was a bad move by Holy's team as a whole, b/c I truly believe if he was the Foreman or Bowe #1/#2 version of Holy, that he would have gotten a late round stoppage here. I remember after this fight, people wondered why Holy didn't look great, and George's handlers were saying that the lackluster Holy was a result of the punches he took from George, and said, "nobody has ever been the same after taking punches from George". But that proved false.... as for a prime Holmes, I actually think his style would have been much more aggressive and active vs. this fight, which would've gotten him in trouble. He fought defensive and being a great fighter it's hard to look good against a guy like that. Styles make fights and Holyfield is one of the greatest counterpunchers in boxing history - so I believe that at their mutual best, and in a 15 rounder, Holy might even KO Larry in round 13-15 after an accumulation of punches due to the openings a more active Larry would create. But ultimately, even though Larry did some nice work here, I don't think this fight was really very close, and for Harold to have it 115-113 is ludicrous to me.

  • @jupiter-8405
    @jupiter-84053 жыл бұрын

    For me Evander never looked so SMALL as in this fight, I'd expect him to against giants like Bowe and Lewis yet Holmes was not. Larry's ringcraft was exceptional as he is one of the greatest ever and Holyfield looked dog tired most of the fight, a mystery because he boxed Bowe at an intense pace for 12 rounds 6 months later.

    Part of me feels Holmes didn't care about winning this fight, he cared more about making Holyfield look ineffectual. This was a victory of principle for Holmes. He really showed everyone just how easily he could have beaten Holyfield had he been 10 years younger. It was like a ''fuck you'' to the boxing establishment - he didn't want his belts back (the belts he was robbed of by the way), he wanted respect, he wanted to show the world that he could make the best heavyweight in the world look foolish and subpar. Really unimpressed with Holyfield - he had an old man in front of him who he couldn't overwhelm, hurt, or outbox.

    This fight should have actually been 'Champion vs Champion' -Holyfield was obviously the WBA, WBC, and IBF heavyweight champion, but Holmes should have been defending the WBO title. . What happened was in Holmes' previous fight he defeated the 18-0 Ray Mercer, who in his prior fight had defeated Tommy Morrison for the WBO heavyweight title - but the corrupt WBO, controlled by Don King, stripped Mercer of his title for deciding to fight Holmes, instead of their #1 contender Michael Moorer. So Holmes should have been the WBO champion at 42 years old. . Holmes also fought WBC heavyweight champion Oliver McCall in 1995, who had just knocked out Lennox Lewis in 2 rounds to win the title a few months earlier - And many thought Holmes was robbed in this match, too. so he absolutely should have been WBO Champ at 42, but he also maybe should have been WBC champ at 45

  • @joeblough261

    @joeblough261

    This was years and years before the WBO was considered anything besides a resting spot for a top contender. The 4 belt era didn't start until around 2004. It gained some traction during the late 90s, but it was a secondary title here, no way it was champion vs. Champion.

    I don't think it was a concussion (maybe it was), I think it was that Holy's aggression put so much pressure on Larry, that he was just bone ass exhausted and just started heaving up his guts like someone who barely makes it to the finish line. I always use that as a comparison between Holy and Tyson...nobody was better at the KO, especially for less just below elite level, he'd destroy them like nobody else...but I always loved how Holy would just outwork them, outwill them, and take their soul to the point where they could barely make the 12 rounds, and/or quit, a la Pinklon, Tillis, Dokes, or like here w/Holmes puking.

Because his ultimate goal was be youngest heavyweight champion. If cus would have loved the entirety of his career Tyson beats everyone and goes 100-0. With cus around, there would be no robin givens. No don king. No rape conviction. No ducking fighters. He would have fought foreman and watched for the left cross. He would have stayed going the body his entire career. Kept his head movement. Buster Douglas wouldn't have even happened. After cus died everything changed. The people around him changed. With cus Tyson would have been the greatest boxer ever. Holyfield may have won the battles, but Tyson has won the war of longevity as he still looks good at 54. Holyfield should have stayed retired.
