AI technology has emerged as a sticking point for workers in the entertainment industry. Without any guardrails, writers and actors both say their work can essentially be used to train AI that can then put them out of a job. As an industry bellwether for AI's potential to displace huge numbers of workers, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and Writers Guild (WGA) are both under contract renegotiations that are being closely watched by many outside of Hollywood. What's really at stake here? Actor, writer, director, producer and computer scientist Justine Bateman joins host Dana Taylor to share her take.

    I’m absolutely with writer and actors fundamentally. Humans aid in the things we complain about so much and it’s baffling to me. We love making decisions as a country that make 90% of people poorer and a select few extremely rich. This isn’t just about acting. People need to wake up

    Justine is really great and she is nailing this stuff. But if an AI "views" your book, movie, music, it owe's you the same as a human who "view's" your material. If it produces something that is too much like your work, you can sue for copyright. AI is going to challenge the very foundations of what it means to be.

    What's happening in Hollywood is a hint of what's coming across the planet in most industries. The threat is real. People need to protest en masse in order to slow Ai down. Sadly, it's inevitable that Ai becomes commonplace, but to what degree depends on what humans do to oppose it. Hollywood has the best chance at controlling the outcome due to the power that actors wield. I also think it's important for people to play with Ai as they would any tool. It does have great benefit if you understand its role. It will make people less fearful of it. Sadly, the genie is out of the bottle, and we've never come face to face with something smarter and more capable than humans. Ai without humans is useless, so think of it as your assistant, capable of doing the tedious tasks you hate doing. Creativity and the human spirit are a long way from being replaced by Ai. That's at least 5 years away.

    I wish this were the case. Ex: Disney has shareholders, but lost 70% of its box office over the last 4 years, lost millions of Disney+ subscribers and lost 1 billion over the last year of movie releases. They took successful franchises and turned them into flops. Good writing is profitable. But companies have decided to focus on ideology -- an ideology explicitly anti-capitalist -- to the detriment of the employees and country. Writers would have the support of everyone if they focused on good stories over inserting ideology into their product. We have several examples of how focusing on what the customer wants would make money, but companies choose to focus on govt and global organizations' directives (explicit or not).

    You know as I ponder this strike I realize that AI types of performers do not appeal to me. I do not animee because I prefer live action performers. So, actual human beings interpreting roles and/or performing can never be replaced with one exception. Game show hosts- but not contestants - can be replaced with BOTS. Good grief those hosts talk too much ie the host of Masterminds🤯 And, someone’s likeness should not be used unless the model is compensated and he or she receives ongoing residuals. I guess I now support the strike by both unions and do so by not patronizing sponsors of repeated programs. Reply

And it isn't unique as they've done the same with Luke Skywalker, James Bond, The Witcher, Star Trek, Dr. Who, Willow, Charmed, etc. And if you complain about any of the changes, the response is always "It wasn't made for you." Everything she is saying is correct from an emotional perspective and from a leverage perspective for the guilds. However, with the more technologically advanced AI systems and integrations into the internet I would argue that the feed of new ideas or content that she is referring to is completely incorrect. Every subculture ground swell comes from ideas and people discuss those at length on the Internet. This would allow for a far more accurate mirror to be held up to our society on a far more rapid basis. As to the actors likenesses, the actors have a hard choice similar to the music industry decades ago. Sell their likeness and make small residuals (think Spotify) or the AI will generate a similar looking actor or actress (think about the hundreds of look alikes on a typical casting couch ie need a Blonde, mid twenties with similar build to Riece Witherspoon) that they can promote for decades across multiple movies who will never age allowing for fan loyalty to remain. I personally grew up idolizing Sly and Schwarz and now they are old. Imagine never having to watch Rambo age. The studio doesn't need the actors likeness in the long run, they only need it during the transition period as they transition fans to pure fictional AI characters they can own in perpetuity who the fans will love after a few movies as long as the quality is there. This battle is lost as soon as the quality of production is presentable.

  • @Chicago48
    @Chicago48 Жыл бұрын

    I like this interview. But I can understand the studio's point of view. I remember sitting through the beginning of Tar and sitting through 15 minutes of credits. Photographers, cinematographers, grip people, production assistants, a hundred producers. 15 minutes of screen after screen and I wondered "why does a movie need THAT many people to produce a movie." And you see the end credits of a movie and there are tons of people who get credit. I think the studios have a point. TOO MUCH cost. However, the actors and creatives should be given compensation if they are replaced by AI. If you start writing and a script and AI takes over, pay the writer. If you introduce a proposal and AI takes over, pay the writer for the proposal.

    I find it hard to believe you don't enjoy watching a TV show or a movie occasionally. Those shows require hours and hours of work to put on, people deserve to be justly compensated for their time and effort, otherwise it's not worth having an industry at all.

    @@CourtFisk-fs6zf I’m an essential worker or that’s what they say. I work 72hrs a week. All my bills are paid and have nothing left over. And when I’m not working or sleeping, I’m outside doing stuff, so no I don’t watch tv or movies. If I do watch anything, it’s on KZread. So you can see I don’t care for services that aren’t necessarily important to day to day living. Especially if it’s a work agenda. FYI I’m a first generation latino. Parents were immigrants that came here with nothing

    Special effects artists got replaced by computer animation, classic animation again got replaced by computer animation. For someone who has a degree in computer science I'm surprise she's taking the stance that she is. She should know better than anyone that by trying to stop AI you're stopping innovation. The writers and actors are not going to stop it they are they're going have to adapt or find new careers.

    I'm a 3D Artist who's worked on movies & streaming shows. I DON'T support the writer's strike or the actors strike. Artists, sound engineers, producers, designers, stage crew, etc. get NOTHING from these strikes except being UNEMPLOYED due to the strikes. Don't be brainwashed by the unions, they are basically the mafia of my industry. These strikes are horrible for so many people but the greedy writers & actors don't care how many people's careers & livelihoods they ruin.
