Historic Footage of The Odeon Cinema, Muswell Hill

I'd welcome comments on the likely age of this footage - judging by the cars in the early part I would say late 60's or 70's but I'm no expert. But no matter what the date, this is the Odeon that I remember so well as a child with it's slightly worn (well loved) interior and exterior, swishy curtains and high, high ceilings in the lobby. From the narration I gather that the cinema was designed as a single screen with the two smaller screens added later, replacing the rear stalls on the ground tier though I always remember them being there. I am so grateful to whoever captured this footage and gave us back some of the memories that we thought lost.

my brother Carl Higgins worked there from the mid 70's. He started off as an usher but under the guidance of the Chief projectionist Mr. Cowley he quickly became a projectionist. He worked long unsociable hours for a decade along with the other projectionist George Achilles. I was fortunate in that as a result of my brother working there I was able to watch films for free, and boy did I go there often! Coming across this video brought back all kinds of memories, in fact I saw Brazil there. Later in life Carl returned to being a projectionist, working for the Everyman chain in Islington and Hampstead, but with the coming of digital film his skills would become redundant...

I grew up across the road and saw Back to the Future 2 but had absolutely no idea what was going on in that film. All that mattered was that the car was cool and Michael J Fox was cooler. When the film ended, they immediately played a trailer for BTTF 3 and my tiny mind was just blown away. Jurassic Park messed me up to the point that I was too scared to go into my kitchen because I was certain that a dinosaur would be standing there just waiting for me. I was 27. I'm heading back there tonight to watch A Quiet Place Day One. Wish me luck.

The film shown on the bottom poster 45 seconds in is Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" which was released in February 1985, and the film on the top poster is "Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend" which was released in March 1985, so I'd say it was shot around then.

Oh that's fantastic, Gary - thank you. I've been Googling 'Baby' as that's all I could make out and not having much luck!

Grew up in Muswell Hill and have been to The Odeon hundreds of times. Fascinating story about the church. I had no idea.
