I grew up across the road and saw Back to the Future 2 but had absolutely no idea what was going on in that film. All that mattered was that the car was cool and Michael J Fox was cooler. When the film ended, they immediately played a trailer for BTTF 3 and my tiny mind was just blown away. Jurassic Park messed me up to the point that I was too scared to go into my kitchen because I was certain that a dinosaur would be standing there just waiting for me. I was 27. I'm heading back there tonight to watch A Quiet Place Day One. Wish me luck.

my brother Carl Higgins worked there from the mid 70's. He started off as an usher but under the guidance of the Chief projectionist Mr. Cowley he quickly became a projectionist. He worked long unsociable hours for a decade along with the other projectionist George Achilles. I was fortunate in that as a result of my brother working there I was able to watch films for free, and boy did I go there often! Coming across this video brought back all kinds of memories, in fact I saw Brazil there. Later in life Carl returned to being a projectionist, working for the Everyman chain in Islington and Hampstead, but with the coming of digital film his skills would become redundant...

Grew up in Muswell Hill and have been to The Odeon hundreds of times. Fascinating story about the church. I had no idea.

I lived in Muswell hill at this time. The cinema at the top of Muswell hill was actually the Rex cinema and the one near St James Church was the Odeon.

I found it interesting, to compare to when I lived in North London late in the last century and drove buses out of the now long defunct Finchley bus garage from around the late 80s into the 90s...route 43.

The film shown on the bottom poster 45 seconds in is Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" which was released in February 1985, and the film on the top poster is "Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend" which was released in March 1985, so I'd say it was shot around then.

This was edited from a cine film called Beauty in the Borough from an unknown amateur cameraman, and now with London's Screen Archives. I myself posted this on KZread and have produced several videos based on the footage of Muswell Hill, including this which you have renamed and set to an awful soundtrack. And the cinema was in fact still called the Ritz then, it didn't become the ABC until 1963.

  • @RozBennetts

Hello, sorry you don't like the sound-track, I'm not mad about it either! I've tried to find one I do like that's the right length but have struggled with what's available on KZread - if you know of one please let me know. And I didn't know the cinema was the Ritz before it was the ABC. I did see the longer video, 'Beauty in the Borough' but apart from a shot of the John Baird pub, this one contained all the Muswell Hill content. Anyway, I was thrilled to find it and I hope you don't mind me borrowing your edit - I just wanted to make sure that I could access it for posterity. If you know of any others like this I would love to see them!

Hi Roz - No, of course not! It's not quite in the public domain (LB Haringey seem to own the copyright now) but as good as. They liked how I used their film and oddly enough, they themselves use my KZread link rather than their own when referring others to this cine film. Regards.

Yes they are a nice bunch of guys plus they have their own track which is a plus too. Lol on the toilet seat part! :-) Actually I think the loo facilities are provided by the airfield which I didn't know when I wrote this but I still think they should get the airfield to provide better facilities. Thank you for your comment.

Good review. Having been to Drift Limits April 2013, the business has definitely grown. More staff, cars and facilities but still a friendly bunch of guys teaching you their hobby. 9.5/10 from me! I mark them down by 0.5 as there was some wee wee on the toilet seat, but I think that was my mate Dave.
