Your posts are bare at the base. Doesn't matter if there treated because treated wood only means rot "resistant". It doesn't mean it's rot proof. And where wood meats the ground is where condensation or water is constantly witnessed, and this will kill a fence post in halve the time... To basically rot proof a post you need to put several applications of a roofing sealant and or put a char on it and seal the burnt char with oil. If you do anyone of these, you'll "doubled the age of the posts."

Note the diagonal support - called a crossbuck - has been pre-installed while the gate was new & completely squared up. Also note the crossbuck is going the correct direction, from the upper latch corner to the lower hinge corner AND is inside the rim frame. This is a well built, fairly heavy gate. Therefore make sure the hinges & screws are rated for that weight. A 3rd hinge could be needed. If so, alignment of the hinges MUST BE correct or they will bind.

Where you chose to install the hinge is week as well. The weight of your gate is going to be constantly pulling at the screws you put in the post. Where as if you would put the hinge on the outside the weight of the gate is pulling laterally on the screws which is stronger than how you have it pulling the screws straight out

@@homemend I can't tell you how many gates I've had to fix that just weren't done right to begin with. Yours looks great. My personal rule of thumb is to always use the biggest hinge I can without going overboard. It might have just been the video, but those looked just a bit small. But I do know hinges have weight margins they work for. Yours might be perfect. I once had to redo an entire double gate because they put that angle brace with a 1/2 inch gap in it. Plus they thought it was a good idea to use sheet rock screws for the pickets.

I would suggest a limit stop of some kind at 90 degrees. A good gust of wind pushing the gate open will bind the hinges and pull the screws out of the post. A better way to frame to gate is to position the permitter framing members so that the frame is the same depth as the post. The hinges then can be installed on the face of the post allowing the gate to open 180 degrees.

So if you are building a gate whether it's small or big your hardware should be made from at least 1/4" plate steel and your fasteners should be the largest diameter lag that you can use not screws, if you follow these two/3/4 rules(#1don't be cheap if you want to do it once) you won't be remaking and/or repairing the gate(s) for hinge/hardware failure. I'd like to believe that you already know that purchasing the correct hardware can't be done at your local Lowe's or Home Depot because they only sell garbage. Thanks 🙈🙉🙊

@@homemend wasn't being a d@#$, I've built a lot of gates and a lot of them had crap hardware because that's what I found at the box stores until I had to build a large 10' x 4' double gate and found that there's different hardware to do it once. As far as the lags vs screws, those hinges are reliant on the bite and overall weight distribution of the fasteners so the smaller the diameter and shear strength of the fasteners the faster it will wallow out and become loose. Anyway wasn't knocking you just pointing out and sharing what I've learned through trial and error. Thanks 🙈🙉🙊

Bro the hinges are way too small for the gate and there’s no adjustable diagonal bracing when it starts to sag out of square

Looks way better especially if you’re doing horizontal boards or an “invisible” gate. I did horizontal 1x2 cedar with 1/2” spacing at my house. Only way you can tell there’s a gate is if you see the 1/2” gaps for hinging. All hardware is inside the fence.

I thought I was the only one that did that. Build straight thru with all bracing in place. We add some thin gussets to our joints as well. Cut for hinges one at a time and install. Makes for a lasting gate
