    Nice vid ... i wondered if something similar would work on my dragging gate, and now your work has given me the confidence to do the same with my own saggy situation. Kudos !

    The real reason this gate sagged was not because of the wood,weight, or hinges. The framing of this gate is incorrect. There is not vertical support to the frame work(no side 2x4s in the frame work). It has horizontal and diagonal support but without that vertical support the diagonal means nothing and it will sag for that reason. I've fixed so many gates built that same way and it's always the same problem. The original fence builder didn't take the time to properly build it, they just made a panel and slapped a diagonal brace and called it a day. Very common incorrect frame work. ~ But you are correct about leveling the holes and re-drilling them. Those original holes looked like it was installed without leveling and was just eye balled without any pilot holes.

    See those little square holes in the hinges ? Thats for carriage bolts. People just use lag bolts and then they get to come back later and revisit this exact same problem over and over. USE carriage bolts.

    What is the reason for having an upward angle on the hinge toward the door? Also, is it normal to have the gap larger on the bottom than on top ?

  • @DIYHGP

    @DIYHGP

    6 жыл бұрын

    Edgar, The upward slant is for future drooping. The cedar is a soft wood and the weight of the gate will ultimately weight it down. So I am anticipating this will happen and so I dont have to do this in another year, I slope it up. This is the reason for the different gap sizes. The gap will close over time.

  • @U2BER2012

    So... the smallest gap at the bottom of the gate above the concrete is 1/2 inch?

    I must be missing something... Why do I keep seeing so many You-Tubers using Ryobi drills ? Is it a sponsor thing ? In my world Ryobi ranks up there with Harbor Freight pwr tools.

  • @DIYHGP

    @DIYHGP

    5 жыл бұрын

    Chooper, that’s an astute observation, the reality is that Ryobi is a dependable and relatively inexpensive tool and a lot of people use them for their interchangeable batteries. Most likely scenario is if someone is not using Ryobi then they have a sponsorship with that tool brand.

    Ryobi impacts and drills are actually really well built. I've had my set for many many years. I install metal roofs, decks, fencing. I have yet to have one fail me. They have outlasted the dewalt tools around me.

    Because the battery connection is the same year after year. A ten year old battery will fit. And when we drop and break our tools they don’t cost a fortune to replace.

    This is a temporary fix.... in 2-3 yrs the gate will sag again. I wonder what its condition is now. Not your fault... unfortunately the gate lacks vertical bracing (no vertical side supports) and thus in time will drop/sag again.
