DiResta Steel & Wood Property Gates

In this woodworking and metalworking project, I build a wood and steel gate designed by Taylor Forrest. The gate was designed to never sag! The steel is all 1/8 thick, by 6" wide on the broad side and 2.5"x 1/8" on the edge. For this project build I used white oak for the inset wood, milled to 3/4 thick. In the shop I used the Lincoln power MIG 260 with dual shield flux core with shielding gas. On the location I use the new Lincoln 330 ranger with the MP210 MIG. Thank you to Lincoln!!!

MUY buena calidad, el texto imagenes. kzread.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO Un manuel muy completo y trabajado. Resulta muy práctico. Para principiantes y profesionales. Lo recomiendo
TOPTIP: Making one of the hinge pins (the lower one) slightly longer makes for a easy hanging experience! nice build
wow that's one heck of a gate!! nice work! but you need to ground the bridge.

So there’s wood on both sides? I was confused because it looked like one side was metal
Nothing like a big concrete floor and some chalk, to make some great big layouts.

Yeah! When I was a punk kid, I help a job superintendent roll the roof trusses for a double car garage on a recently floated floor slab. Up until that point, I thought roof trusses only came from factories equipped with huge jigs. All it took was a chaulkline and a tape measure; would never have thought of using a piece of strap as a straightedge.
When I first saw the gate, my reaction was NO, NO, and NO! That's how you make a gate to sag. That Diagonal brace should go from the bottom hinge to the top, outside corner. After watching the build, I have forgiveness. Steel makes a difference, yes, it does. Sweet project!

Even if it were made out of rope, strength is in tension, not compression.

Steel braces should always be under tension not compression. This isn’t a wood frame gate where braces under tension rely on the holding strength of the fastener. Steel buckles and bows under compression. It’s strength is under tension.

@@banannaninja exactly. My first impression was of a wooden gate. Having watched the video, I withdrew my wrong opinion. A wooden gate requires compression. Steel, requires tension. I've built some decent wooden gates. I have yet to work in steel on that level.

It's a small gate. Either way would be fine. He's not spanning an 8 lane highway. It's like 6 feet per side.

Always impresses me how everything Jimmy makes looks solid, sturdy and tough AF.
I was waiting for Jimmy to jump on it as he swung it open. A great gate has to pass the swing test
Taylor came up with a fantastic design and you executed it to perfection!

Gate to Paradise! Family work is an example for everyone! Great!!!🤠👍🤝
Thank you for showing the hinges. As they are quite literally pivotal, I couldn't have slept not knowing. Great gate.
Who else was expecting him to grab a torch and burn the wodden part? ;-)

yup burn diresta into the wood
Fabulous how you combined the traditional wooden gate design that always, at least in uk rot, with the strength of steel to make this lovely eye candy approach with the durability of steel. Love it! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Jimmy for being a constant source of inspiration over the years that has made me into the maker that I am today.
I haven’t even watched the video YET but the design alone on these is really exquisite.
DAMN! You built the snot outta that gate! Terrific design!
Aha! Following this build on IG, I couldn't tell how the boards has been inset in the steel frame. This explains that so much better for me. That's a fine looking gate. I bet the front gate will look even better, though it's hard to see what not to like on this one. Thanks for sharing!
That was neat job and a damn good looking gate Jimmy!
Awesome idea by Taylor, and an awesome build by Jimmy and the team
Beyond the enjoyment of watching you create, I could listen to that blues riff all day long.
WOW ... An Armour Plated & Bullet Proof gate . Couple of centuries life in that beast !! Great build
I love the design and the choice of using two very different materials, they look (and must feel) great together! Very inspiring. Congrats to Taylor and you! :)
For me this man is a phenomenon

Your follower from Iraq for years is a fan of your work 🇺🇸🇮🇶
If you ever build up the drive under the gates with concrete etc, install a lenght of U channel for the drop pins, many people just use tubes, a channel is easier to clean out ;)
Got to love floor CAD👊👍and gas shielded flux core for the win.
Absolutely love taylors design very pleasing to the eye
Definitely a cool addition! It's very neat to have the wood on both sides.
These gates are a work of art.
Nice job jimmy! I watch your videos more For the little tricks hidden within than the item that it's "about". Deep respect for you my brother! Hoping to see you at maker camp next year!
This is my favorite video. Thanks
Maestro! Usted lo hace que parezca fácil! Pero los que hemos trabajado sabemos perfectamente lo que cuesta hacer un trabajo ORIGINAL Y BIEN HECHO! me Quito en sombrero ante usted! MAESTRO!

Pure DiResta artistry. I still miss Spike...🥲
What a beautiful gate. Great idea to combine steel and woon like that
Quick and dirty build, perfect!
If you spray paint the floor with 1 inch lines spaced at 5 inch intervals you have kinda of a large cutting mat. I've done this with cm, 5 cm lines every 10 cm. There's no going back for me, it's been a huge helper with large builds.

that's an awesome idea. For us, we reconfigure the shop so much though, that we're we build and lay out isn't in a consistent coordinate on the floor. Sometimes the big open space is clogged with tools, or things get shifted. We're constantly "tetris-ing" the layout for the best use for the individual jobs. If we had a dedicated open area to use, I would definitely consider laying out a grid.
What i'm amazed at...is not his creativity, workmanship, or quality...what i'm amazed at is his ability to get up and down off the floor when he was working on it!!
Wholly chit that looks fun!
Kinda like the simplistic locking and securing mechanism. Not a lot to go wrong when the inevitable power failure hits. Beautiful gate. Not a simple task to set them precisely, nice work.
Full size drawing for the win. Those gates are awesome.
Awww yes.. Good old fashion Jimmy's project..
I wish I could get down on my knees like that again. Beautiful work. Should last forever.
Thank you for the inspiration. Your videos are proof that your only limitation is you ability to try.
Beautiful job Jimmy...loved the slide steel guitar too 🎶 Thanks!
Beautiful as ever!!
Great looking gate
Muito bom Diresta lindo portão ! Você inspira muita gente aqui no Brasil.
This is Taylor’s best design in your sketchbook! Great work. The scenery is beautiful.

After a few rainy or snowy days I see automatic gate openers installed on those. Nice work. :-)
Absolutely brilliant!!
I would've like to have seen those pillars being built. They look pretty new too. I also admire you saved the beautiful white oak for the inside instead of the randos.
Gates look great; a little weather and they will look even better. Cheers
That's true craftsmanship 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Wood and iron fits perfect together! Greetings from germany
Slightly reminds me of a Cadillac grille. Great build! The Catskills are a fabulous backdrop.
