DiResta Steel & Wood Property Gates

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

To purchase the limited run 12 pocket jeans I am wearing in this video clip on the link below imakeny.com/collections/dires...
In this woodworking and metalworking project, I build a wood and steel gate designed by Taylor Forrest. The gate was designed to never sag! The steel is all 1/8 thick, by 6" wide on the broad side and 2.5"x 1/8" on the edge. For this project build I used white oak for the inset wood, milled to 3/4 thick. In the shop I used the Lincoln power MIG 260 with dual shield flux core with shielding gas. On the location I use the new Lincoln 330 ranger with the MP210 MIG. Thank you to Lincoln!!!

Yeah! When I was a punk kid, I help a job superintendent roll the roof trusses for a double car garage on a recently floated floor slab. Up until that point, I thought roof trusses only came from factories equipped with huge jigs. All it took was a chaulkline and a tape measure; would never have thought of using a piece of strap as a straightedge.

When I first saw the gate, my reaction was NO, NO, and NO! That's how you make a gate to sag. That Diagonal brace should go from the bottom hinge to the top, outside corner. After watching the build, I have forgiveness. Steel makes a difference, yes, it does. Sweet project!

Even if it were made out of rope, strength is in tension, not compression.

  • @banannaninja

Steel braces should always be under tension not compression. This isn’t a wood frame gate where braces under tension rely on the holding strength of the fastener. Steel buckles and bows under compression. It’s strength is under tension.

@@banannaninja exactly. My first impression was of a wooden gate. Having watched the video, I withdrew my wrong opinion. A wooden gate requires compression. Steel, requires tension. I've built some decent wooden gates. I have yet to work in steel on that level.

If you spray paint the floor with 1 inch lines spaced at 5 inch intervals you have kinda of a large cutting mat. I've done this with cm, 5 cm lines every 10 cm. There's no going back for me, it's been a huge helper with large builds.

that's an awesome idea. For us, we reconfigure the shop so much though, that we're we build and lay out isn't in a consistent coordinate on the floor. Sometimes the big open space is clogged with tools, or things get shifted. We're constantly "tetris-ing" the layout for the best use for the individual jobs. If we had a dedicated open area to use, I would definitely consider laying out a grid.
