It's important to note that 99% accuracy by itself doesn't mean cheating. I had 98.6 accuracy when I was 1500 online with boring draw. Almost anyone can have high accuracy by playing known theoretical draw, like Berlin. Here however the cheater had 99.4 accuracy in a complicated position full of tension, sacking pawns and pieces and with almost no time spent.

agreed. I had 100% accuracy in a game, but it was because my opponent's first non-book move blundered mate in 3. Really it's a question of your opponent...it's not too crazy to play close to 100% accuracy when your opponent constantly blunders easy tactics (not hard to find the best move when your opponent hangs their pieces or blunders checkmate).

Maybe he is too lucky or smart to find them. It is low probability but still possible. Cheating in chess is almost impossible to prove via game review. One person can get 99% accuracy over and over and still not cheat. Also, using computers to get some help shouldn’t be that bad. We are using them everywhere. Why not chess? One can argue that it is no fun to play because machines will always draw. But this is false. You can always develop your own chess engine. So, there is room to improve. The greatest chess players are the ones who develop the best engines. We should stop blaming people for using engines. It’s literally like using google maps.

the thing with chess engine moves is that the only way they make sense is later in a very particular way that you cannot really immediately see the reason they make sense. so it's pretty apparent when someone cheats. the real good players that come close to a chess engine like hikaru or magnus is that they do their best to "calculate" but an engine does it differently. and you can just outright see that a move in a particular position makes absolutely zero sense from a human perspective because it would only make sense to an engine, hence cheating.

It’s not so much the move accuracy by itself as much as the unnatural moves and an intuitive feeling of playing against a wall. The more dead giveaway is that regardless of position the opponent was taking basically the same uniform 3 seconds per turn where high level players either play faster when they know and longer when they don’t

  • @williamguy88

Because he’s been playing chess probably for longer then you have been alive. When you play something for so long, you know when something weird is happening. His opponents’ moves made absolutely zero sense by human standards. This is a top 10 chess player globally specifically mentioning how tricky the position is and his opponent is playing completely effortlessly. The account was banned for cheating. Again, noticing something is off becomes trivial when you play for so long. It’s impossible to not notice.

It was the sequence of attacking moves which made Hikaru's pieces and his king handicapped. It is impossible for an untitled player to destroy a top GM with such attacking moves. Also it turns out that the opponent's accuracy was 99.4% which is humanely impossible while making such attacking moves. Even top GM's can't play with such accuracy.

Hm ok, maybe he really cheated but I don't get it, why this particular playing should be cheating a priori. The rook d2 decision was not too suspicious. And then there are at least two obvious problem fields for white: g2 and the hanging d4. Black has dozends of critical ideas here, has a knight and a queen that can be brought quickly into multiple action ideas and has a fully safe king at the same time. In contrast, white has a totally isolated weak queen. Yes it was impressive playing by black but I don't see too much really deep weird magic here.

Let's say you're in a math competition that has many complicated equations to solve. Most people would approach the problems the same. Look for patterns, and use a transform/formula that they have learned in school to simplify the problem. After they solve it, the proctors of the exam would be able to look at their work and follow their train of thought to arrive at the solution. They most certainly cannot change the numbers into Byte data and process them the way a computer would. EVERY SINGLE competitor would solve it using a logical string of steps that only a HUMAN is capable of. Those types of problems may take 10 minutes or more to solve. The more complicated it is, the more time is required. Then there are some problems that can be done in your head, but only a VERY SMART or well-prepared student can do so. Most other students would still have to calculate it on paper, but a very smart person can see the problem and recognize in their mind that, "hey, I can use Blah Blah's Theorem to simplify this into A^2 + B^2 = C^2.... oh wait, now I can use Pythagorean's Theorem, let me put those values into a calculator and solve it right away. I got the answer!" Simply speaking, even though they can calculate it "in their head", it is still solved in a way that a "real human" would solve it. Those problems may take 30 seconds to solve. A very experienced math whiz (a "grandmaster") would be able to tell if a particular problem can be solved in 30 seconds, or if it requires much more time. And if you see some guy solving EVERY SINGLE problem in 30 seconds, even the "10 minute" ones, then you know that person is cheating without a doubt. Now, it's possible that person happened to recall some obscure equation from some paper (in this case, a previous game that the chess player analyzed), but to be able to do it over and over again, it would be statistically impossible.
