Les Ayres (Mr. Zelinka) was a star right in his youth in 1930, in the movie ¨Al quite in the Western Front¨. It is interesting that I didn´t want to retire but since I got 55 is so difficult to find a job. People tell me that my resume is terrific. I want to get my pension now because of survival ... not because I want to stop working

Great episode. In today's world, imagine today about keeping Mr Zelinka teaching. Social media. Kids really caring that much about a teacher. Mr. Z having his own hashtag. Students laughing about this on their cell phones. Much more caring generation back then despite a tv show.

Joe Clayton I’m glad to say my 4 kids are not like that but I totally understand where u r coming from, sadly here in the uk we have knife crime too, but I’m also glad to say I’ve raised my kids to care for others and always help someone when u know what is happening to them is wrong, I’ve had teachers calling me to tell me that at least one or two of my kids have stood up for others being bullied etc, and that makes me feel proud especially when a lot of kids today like someone said would be recording it on their phones to put on social media, it’s sad that it’s come to this isn’t it, the only good thing about that is that at least there’s proof of the crime or act the person has done so it makes convictions easier for the police, there was sadly one case about a year ago when a child got bullied just outside of my kids school and one of the bullies mates recorded it and the police as well as people on social media seen it and the girl was arrested, that’s the only good part, sadly at the time of the incident the poor girl got hurt and wasn’t anyone around to help her only the nasty vile bully and her mates, if u can call them that, I think they are all sheep following the bully because they are scared of her, thank god if one of my kids was there they would of done the right thing and helped her get away, it’s so wrong, and it’s also crazy how more and more girls r fighting and getting into more trouble than boys!! I remember when girls were more lady like, not running around acting like a Tom boy, it’s so sad, God bless to u and your family too, may the world shape up and more kids learn right from wrong, after all the message all the time on this very program is that it only take one person to make a difference and then many will follow, all the best, Kate 😊 xx

Loved the episode on Mr Zelinka! All of the Highway to Heaven episodes speak to the heart and soul of issues which are important morally and ethically. I too am a teacher and I love my students. I just turned 60 and their enthusiasm breathes life into me. I can’t imagine another career and very honestly am frightened by the idea of retirement so I believe God sent me to be a teacher and that is what I intend to continue doing. It keeps me young alive and “on my toes.” I love it and I feel blessed to be doing it.

One great episode. I had some real special teachers in my time and I sure would have hated to see them kicked out in the street because of an arbitrary and discriminatory age rule. Good teachers are what makes school "fun". It's always fun to have one's mind stretched and it's a lot of fun to learn.

Mr. Z reminds me of my 11the grade chemistry teacher, Mr. Simpson, at Fulton High in Missouri. He was so much fun, but wasn't a pushover. He once exploded a balloon filled with hydrogen in class. While we students had a blast, the principal was walking by and nearly went into hysterics.lol! We need more teachers like both Mr. Z and Mr. Simpson, and I believe other teachers would benefit from from their example. That is to say, ALL teachers are capable of achieving great success with the proper guidance and motivation from dedicated peers. More participation and interest and less criticism by parents and guardians wouldn't hurt either. Children learn from the adults around them.

Would have been more satisfying if the kids had found a way to turn the tables afterward and make that smarmy principal take the same rigged competency test. Your balloon story reminded me of my own HS chem teacher. We came in one day to see a balloon on his desk that he touched with a match. It went up with a little flame and he said "That was helium." The next day there was another balloon and this time he stood back and used one of those long fireplace matches. It went up in a big burst of flame and he said "That was hydrogen." The third day there was yet another balloon and this time he had a long match taped to the end of a six-foot pole. We went into a panic and those of us in the first couple of rows were ducking for cover since we were closer to the balloon than he was. The balloon just went "pop" and he said "That was air." That was nearly 50 years ago, but I still laugh thinking about how he played us with that stunt.

At UNLV we have one great Math teacher who is better at the subject at 85 years of age than most others in the department. And he is still teaching today. He had the same attitude that Mr Z had in this presentation. He is also the longest tenured member of the states (Nevada) higher education institutions (both Reno and Vegas campuses). If I had not gotten this near fatal infection at 70 which ruined my legs I would still be teaching too. I loved teaching Math.

Nice modern-day retelling of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". Well, "modern" for the 1980s. If done now, in the age of smart phones, the Internet, and social media, it would be very different. They'd probably have to title it "Goodbye, Boomer, and Good Riddance". The kids would be running the school and there would be a safe space set aside in every hallway.

There is tremendous age bias in the teaching field. Also I don't believe that every student signed the petition. Eighty percent would b more normal. However, the real thrust of this series is Landon's push toward the light-doing the right thing, being a better person, trying to initiate positive change--anti violence, anti-chauvinism etc.

90% of teachers today would fail that test.... but to ease retirement age teachers from school one could give them an easier schedule (a) in high school in own subjects, (b) in university or night school and most importantly (c) in teacher training. Schools today have too many facilitators, not teachers, who merely present data, mark exam papers and use white boards.. not looking at the class as a surrogate parent noting kids who don't get it, those that do and those sitting on the fence. Their job is to feed all 3 categories respectively with challenge, basic stepping stones and motivation. That is a difficult call as most teacher training is theory for so young students with no life experience and tend to play favourites. Further class sizes should be around 12 and also have team teaching where teachers chose their partners based on their mutual spark, knowledge, presentation and integrity. The state can afford it as all finances are mere numbers in a computer. Retirement should be at age 60 for all and kids only need 4 days a week schooling and have time to learn life skills, accountability and being practical in organised community projects. But what would I know, I am just a humble maintenance man! However at age 70 the spark may flicker with low batteries, be out of touch or intolerant of youth culture, deal with changing IT, teaching methods and dubious ideology of conveyor belt syllabuses to suit corporations who benefit the most from education. It is corporations who should foot the bill for all school and tertiary education.

Just goes to show how there higher up will cheat just to get what they want but nice to c there crap back fired when u have a angel on your side. This is like in rl and how slimy people r on the people who do r not with power. Sad. Goes to also show when u r a good person people can c that and will help at times. People can make a diff in life but most don't care to try. people will complain but no nothing to change it. So don't complain unless u tried first.
