Highly Specialized Truck Moves Giant Sailboat

Ғылым және технология

Doug bought this truck for moving giant boats. He welded the trailer himself, which is impressive because they moved a 65,000 pound boat with it. The truck can only go 35 miles per hour. It has an automatic transmission, power steering and power brakes. The hitch can be raised and lowered a lot to get the trailer over rough ground. There is even a convenient rear door so the driver can see and yell to the back.
The crew here are professionals, they know what they are doing. Hooking the pickup to it is what guys live for. Its like a commercial for beer or possibly a truck commercial.

We call them trailer jockeys almost every warehouse that has docks has these trucks to shuffle trailers around the yard.

Small boats, small problems - big boats, big problems ;) Just kidding - with the right tool you can accomplish (almost) everything.

I am rethinking the whole issue of boat size. There is an optimum it is desirable to be able to pull them out of the water and tow them yourself "go small go now". I have a Galion 22 and that is ample space for me.

@@DavidPaulNewtonScott A trailerable 22 is real convenient, especially if you have a vehicle that can trailer it and a place to park the trailer.

The truck was originally used to move shipping containers around the port, but Doug welded the trailer himself based on a similar trailer he saw once. I was real impressed he welded something that moved 65,000 pounds down the road at 35 miles per hour.

Yeah, It would be worth the $900 for sure. I think it cost more than that to get it out of the water and parked where it is now. My boat is a catamaran that was used in the KZread channel 9to5less. I traded a MacGregor sailboat for it.

I don't get a lot of interaction with other people and that's not healthy, particularly as you get older. Despite that, I am having a nice day at my cabin. As I said to my son, the other day living at the marina is probably good for you. Ironic that you said in a reply to me that didn't like boats and you seem to just use them as cheap accommodation. I have recently been having a tough time working on my cabin. All the digging and hauling logs around, plus the weather, has been bad raining all the time. There is a more subtle side to your videos, which is truly American. Getting on with it and doing stuff. Like a scene in the Waltons where his son in law is complaining that he has no place for them to live. The father say they can have an old place up on the mountain. So the guy says that old place needs a lot of fixing up. The father gets up walks out of the room, comes back and throws a toolbox on the table. That's your answer, "he says "that's my answer, "he replies. When I am getting cheesed off with a job I just think what would the nine hundred dollar luxury yacht guy do? He would just get on with it and I get on with it.

Thanks for the perspective. I was afraid I was going crazy and also didn't think the fact that everyone who works here is homeless was a good sign. Now I can take pride in the fact that our plight is truly American. I think the "Get on with it" line is shouted in the background of a Pink Floyd song. It might be on the wall, or possibly the dark side.

@@DavidPaulNewtonScott I have shared some of my perspectives on life in KZread comments before. They sent warnings and didn't allow any more comments for 24 hours. This may be an American thing too. Not sure they are allowed to do it in England, Portugal or Philippines.

Truck looks like what is called a yard donkey - used if you are moving a bunch of semi trailers around in the yard. Nothing more than what is needed & the rear door to quickly access the connections to the trailers - nothing special

This ^^^ Yes, this truck is an old Ottawa yard tractor. We always called them yard broncs The fifth wheel hitch goes up and down so that the driver doesn't have to crank up and down the dolley wheels under each trailer he wants to move. He simply backs under the trailer hitching up to it, then reaches out the back door to hook up the air supply to the trailer, then lifts it up, releases the brakes, and drives away to it's new location. Once there, he does the same but in the reverse order to leave it there. Very quick and easy.
