HERRIOT WAY | NORTH YORKSHIRE DALES | PART THREE | THWAITE, KELD, SMELT MILL

Welcome back to part three of the Herriot Way in the North Yorkshire Dales National Park.
If you haven't seen parts one and two, please take a look at my channel to view those first. It will make more sense that way.
Steph and I begin our day at Usha Gap campsite, which I highly recommend. Great facilities and good value for money. Also, we just turned up, didn't book in advance and paid as we left. No issues, and the staff were very friendly.
We retraced our steps back to the official trail about ten minutes away in the lovely village of Thwaite. It was very early, so nothing was open yet, but there were some nice-looking tearooms.
The day started with a steep ascent up Kidson Hill and back down the other side into Keld. We visited Ruskin's campsite cafe, and I enjoyed a hot brew and a sausage roll. Good value for money, not too expensive. Keld is where four big long-distance walks merge! The Herriot Way, The Coast to Coast, The Pennine Way and the Pennine Journey. It is a vibrant place with many backpackers and holidaymakers around.
As Steph and I sat, slowly sipping our drinks, we had a big decision to make, take the high route over the moors with lots of up up up! Or take the gentler route by the River Swale winding through green pastures. We decided on the high route!
We began our ascent, following mostly rocky and rugged footpaths, some with steep drops leading to watery ravines below. We passed several waterfalls and old run-down dwellings, and mining works. It gave a real sense of Yorkshire's past and industrial heritage, showing the best of its hard labouring history. Sometime later, we dropped down into a ravine, reaching Blakethwiate Smelt Mill. Beautiful, stunning and mysterious, even one of the kilns appeared to be untouched by time! We found a flat spot big enough to pitch both our tents. Inside the ruins of an old Smelt Mill building would be where we slept that night. This was an epic location for a wild camp, probably one of my favourite spots to this date. Interestingly, we didn't see a soul pass us by. It was so incredibly peaceful and quiet.
Soon after we pitched up, it began to rain, and rain, and rain. Quite heavy at times. We ate our dinners from inside our tents and decided on an early night.
That's where we finish day three. Part four is coming very soon. Stay tuned! In part four, we walk from Blakethwaite to Grinton via Reeth.
Thank you for watching. If you haven't done so already, please do consider subscribing to my channel and, if possible, give it a big thumbs up and leave a positive comment. It does help me out.
If you have any questions about this trail, please do ask. I'm more than happy to share my knowledge and experience of the Herriot Way. It's a great trail; each section is different from the next. However, I would recommend following the plan in the guidebook, which we didn't do. Here is a link to the guidebook. It's a good resource.

Fab views over the moors and valleys, and a cracking spot for camping. Surprising to not see even 1 or 2 other hikers on a C2C route but can be like buses - none and then a bunch at the same time 😁 Roll on Part 4!

It was a hard up, but a beautiful hike, and you couldn't pick a more perfect place to wildcamp even with the rain. Another great vlog, Rachel. I hope the rain lets up for the next day. Thanks for sharing.

You guys are amazing! Great review of the reasonable campsite to start. Thwaite is lovely with its quaint postboxes and tea rooms. I do want to try and review Yorkshire villages at some point, i will definitely include this one on my itinerary. keld even has a B and B. Makes the route even more appealing. You got great weather and isolation, would have thought there would have been a few c2c’s up there. Great spot for your wild camp! Have to get into all this water purification malarky! There is the rain! Roll on part 4 👍

Such beautiful scenery and it looks like a pleasant, doable hike. I've been sharing your videos with my friend who's an absolute Herriot-ophile and suggested that since she's already seen the Dales she needs to walk them the Herriot Way.

😮 @RamblingRachelUk your not going to belive this Rachel. But I decided this afternoon to head to Yorkshire for a couple of days mooching and wildcamping until Monday morning. I had plotted a route on hikerapp starting from Keld 👍 the exact route you two did in this video.. Although I will be doing a circular back to Keld before heading to Malham for my second day 😁 Great video and superb wildcamp spot which I was thinking of whilst plotting my route 😁 thanks for sharing and takecare x

Ohh love Reeth something to look forward too next video and some great hiking around there too. I love those old Yorkshire villages and there are so many of them, all looking very similar and all just as awesome too. Keld is always our turn a round point when we do the Muker wildflower meadow walk in the summer and we always stop off at that farm teashop but never go to the waterfalls as it is always in a drought when we seem to go there. Been going to Gunnerside since I was a kid and had many a lunch stop at the old smelt works as well, such an idyllic spot. Twenty miles was good going on day 2 mind and I suppose that rain had to come at some point, which was a shame. Cheers Alan

Absolutely a wonderful place to explore. Love all the wonderful views of the houses built with stone. So very different than the houses where I live. Also, beautiful waterfalls, old ruins, mining mill, green countryside and so much more. Thanks for sharing with us. Have a great weekend.
