HERRIOT WAY | NORTH YORKSHIRE DALES | PART FOUR | SMELT MILL, HEALAUGH, REETH, GRINTON

Welcome back to part three of the Herriot Way in the North Yorkshire Dales National Park. Filmed July 2023.
If you haven't seen previous parts, please take a look at my channel to view those first. It will make more sense that way.
We begin the day at Blakesthwaite Smelt Mill, at the top end of Gunnderside Gill ravine. It had been a wet and drizzly morning. We started with a short, sharp climb up and out of the ravine onto the moorland, Melbecks Moor. The weather wasn't the best, with poor visibility. It felt like walking across the surface of the moon. We didn't see a soul up on the moors; it was eerily quiet. It was easy walking following the rugged track once used by the mill workers and miners from the industrial age. There was lots of old mining and milling equipment left to decay. After a few hours, we walked down into the small hamlet of Healaugh. No amenities, but a nice enough place for a quick rest. Thirty minutes later, we entered Reeth, a vibrant traditional Yorkshire town with a museum, shop, bakery and plenty of places to find food and drink. We stopped here for lunch. We bimbled over to Grinton, the next village, only about a ten-minute walk. This village had a lovely little church and a pub. The Grinton Lodge YHA isn't in the village just beyond but on the Herriot Way route. Another ten minutes later, we finished our day at the Youth Hostel. We upgraded from a dorm to a private room. The youth hostel has great facilities, including a restaurant, bar, self-catering kitchen, lounge, and a dry room, which came in handy for our wet tents. Please note the check-in time for this specific youth hostel is 5 p.m. The place is locked up, so don't arrive too early. There are also camping pitches and outdoor pods. The hostel is on the route; no extra miles on this day.
Thank you for watching. If you haven't done so already, please do consider subscribing to my channel and, if possible, give it a big thumbs up and leave a positive comment. It does help me out.
If you have any questions about this trail, please do ask. I'm more than happy to share my knowledge and experience of the Herriot Way. It's a great trail; each section is different from the next. However, I would recommend following the plan in the guidebook, which we didn't do. Here is a link to the guidebook. It's a good resource.

    Lovely shots of the scenery and the haunting music suited the otherworldliness of the mining landscapes so well. A great day on the trail! 😀

    I tried to capture the bleakness of the moors during the foggy morning. That was a great section! Thanks for tuning in, looking forward to seeing your next instalment xx

    Been a while since I binged a KZread series but I did with this, I loved every minute! I have to admit I watched Part 5 first, then the rest in the right order, it brought back some wonderful memories of times spent in those places when I was lucky enough to be living in Reeth. Looking back, I don't think I'd be into walking and camping if I hadn't lived there, I owe those Yorkshire Dales a big thankyou for giving me the best hobby I've ever had.

    Hey Rachel, very early start for you 😅 shame about the small leak in the tent overnight. Even in the rain though it’s a great spot to wake up 😊 beautiful section of the trail and interesting lead mining remains along the way. Glad that sun started to make an appearance for you too

    Hi Rachel Good morning, you look quite nice waking up 5 am early in the morning. Sorry about the leak through the seam of the tent Is that repairable after drying? Your choice of music really brings up and enhance the footage into the dreaming world-like OMGoodness, I just love the view of the countryside , the farmland continuously lies between mountains. Of course, the dry stone walls cannot be missed. It is like a painting in a huge canvas 6:44 haha nice to have a public bathroom. It is such pleasure to watch you and your friend in a charming town with full of stone architecture/ 10:28 I don't see in my neighborhood/ concrete jungle I may say, hahah Yeah!!! Nice and warm bed, Rachel 10:58 ohhh windy. See you at next hike... only if you have a chance, see me hike to the waterfalls....kayak7seas ciao

    Done many a walk around Reeth and a place I used to take Mrs Metalman a lot when we were courting - long time ago now. I often have to have a leak in the night by that is an age thing but good to hear it was not all of your tent that was leaking. I give thanks every day I wake up breathing and I remember sitting in that exact same spot you were getting water but on a blisteringly hot day. What a difference when the sun comes out and always called in the Black Bull every time we stopped. Nice looking church in Grinton but those clouds were looking threatening again! Cheers Alan

Wow great shots of the low lying cloud (clag)! Neat explore of the ruins, that intact chimney was impressive! 6:32 yay 🕺💃 bridge twirl, Jill says you are officially in the bridge twirling club and that was top notch 👍 enough waffling more tea drinking 😂 20p a widdle, steep but not as steep as the 50p we paid in keswick this weekend whatever happened to spending a penny? 🤷🏻‍♂️ gorgeous church! Love the yha sign slap! Hope you had a good dry out and rest! ❤️

    Nice one me duck. A question. How do you find the Frogg Toggs jacket? I've heard mixed reviews?

  • @ramblingracheltrailtales

    @ramblingracheltrailtales

    9 ай бұрын

    I’ve found it performs better than most of my more expensive waterproof jackets. It’s lightweight. But it’s not the most flexible, so make sure you get one that’s the right size with plenty of room. Also, be careful of snagging of brambles. Also, it doesn’t have pockets which is annoying. It did well on this trail and served its purpose.
