Hermitcraft S10#6: Ravager Wrangling

Ойындар

Today we experiment combining TNT minecarts with the auto crafter to make some useful mining techniques. We delve into moss madness by making an 18 cell farm. We check out Joel's new Etho statues. Then we join up with BdoubleO to get some raid ravagers for the Frogger game replica.

Game designer here! I have some ideas for Ravogger to counter the issue where you can just dodge the ravagers by just following them one after the other. One option is to add a time limit to make it so that if you snake through it then you have significantly less time for later sections. If you do add a time limit, having a scoreboard for going faster or different reward tiers for going faster would encourage players to take riskier maneuvers, just like Decked Out! Another option is to add pressure plates w/ lights through the street that dictate how the players have to move across the streets, removing the ability to just chase the carts as they go by. Finally, adding some optional collectibles that drop from the ceiling at the start (maybe a raffle ticket they could redeem after they play?) on the streets would encourage people to book it towards those independently of where the ravagers are, especially if there was a time limit. Also, I would lean into the double-ravager "glitch" as they were getting released. Having two go at the same time would emulate the different size trucks that exist in Frogger as well! Or, honestly, leaving it as is and letting players discover the "exploit" and then teasing them for using it might also just work as well! Looks really good so far, I love how you're doing this and I'm excited to see how it all comes together!

Another option would be to fill the floor with copper bulps, redstone ore or trip wire or something similar so that you can track updates to the block. then you can keep a score of the number of blocks walked (that have been updated) which would work similar to the time panalty

Using walls or glass panes over the track and one block before and after could create lanes when crossing to prevent ravager chasing as well. I'd imagine the increase in difficulty for the water area will counter the ease of the roads as Etho already mentioned, though.

Baisically, Etho, on average, says Joel's name 64.16% into the episodes Whereas Joel, on average, says Etho's name 41.88% into the video And that, my fellow Ethogirls, is definately INDISPUTABLE evidence, that Joel is more obsessed with Etho😊

@@SharksFan1997 Yepp, completely correct, it's not counted by frequency, but by percentage of time, or in other words, how soon into the video they mentioned eachother's names! For anyone still confused, go to the Ethoslab subreddit and find the post, I think it's by u/DeadSpiderInPocket and it's called 'Etho obsession graph' Also, I would just like to add, that Etho's videos are about double the length of Joel's video, meaning that Joel says Etho name even more early and often compared to Etho. Because if you do the math, 41.88% of an almost 21minute long video(Joel's) is shorter than 41.88% of an over 40 minute video(Etho's) and especially a lot shorter(just like their height irl) than 64.16% of that over 40minute long episode. Just saying, that makes Joel EVEN more obsessed compared to Etho Moral of the story; Joel is sooo obsessed with Etho, and Etho is TOTALLY not!!❤

@@jeanlou3 Autocrafter setup to make tnt minecarts, slimeblock launch them and then advance by a set amount and have it so you trigger it via infinity bow then run back and forth before triggering it for the next pass. So basically the same thing he did here only horizontally instead of vertically combined with a tunnel bore with autocrafting only sideways opposed to vertically via gravity so you don't have to stop at bedrock and move/rebuild everything all the time (and fly back and forth getting 'sploded and trying to do crap in a hurry without losing everything). This is way easier to do piecemeal yeah, but my way is superior as far as logistics and resources are concerned and also one and done/tileable. Edit: The real answer however is just dupe the TNT though cuz that's ridiculous and doesn't make any sense. If it's doable in game without mods it's valid. That's not "cheating" it's "emergent gameplay". In other words, the same thing as most of the buggy redstone mechanics he hypocritically wouldn't go without such as BUD detection/quasi-connectivity (which eventually led to the observer the EXACT same way sand and TNT duping is leading to renewable sand ;) Yes, Doc was (and still is) objectively correct. People can play however they want. Totally fine to be a masochist and handicap yourself all day. Nobody cares so long as you don't ACTUALLY lie, cheat or steal (or force your lunacy on others lol). Sorry for the PSA but it needed to be pointed out as Hermitcraft (a server that's all SUPPOSED to be about individualism, diversity and creativity) has a nasty collectivist/totalitarian streak that slips through the facade on occasion (no matter how much they try to hide it). Bear in mind i'm not blaming Etho (or anyone for that matter) as i HIGHLY doubt it was done out of actual malice (well, at least i hope not) but a small touch of generalized ignorance and intolerance can often go a long way when ppl start getting tribal over it.

Something about Etho and Bdubs' dynamic is so refreshing to watch! A lot of time hanging with other hermits tends to be a lot of having fun and joking around and it's all around a great time, but when Etho and Bdubs are working together on a project like this it's really nice to see that they're genuinely just good friends hanging out. There's obviously still lots of fun goofing off and whatnot, but also just generally chatting with eachother and figuring stuff out together. Something about it just feels so real.

I feel like lingering potions of slowness would remove the "cheese" stratergy (30:11) where you just follow the ravagers that pass. It doesn't completely get rid of the strat, but it will force the players to be a bit more mindful when strafing back and forth. Another idea I have with the potions is to sometimes have little events like "rain" (splash potions fall from ceiling) or "flood" (water flows around the track) to make the path a little harder to traverse

Regarding chasing the ravagers making it easy - maybe you could have the ravagers randomly stomp on the brakes (stop abruptly for a couple seconds), or even have the lanes randomly reverse direction. Or maybe hazards on the roads to make it more difficult to travel too far along the lanes - maybe "oil spills" formed from soul sand, or "weeds" made from bushes and/or wither roses.

That story about playing the games with your feet reminded me when I was younger. I sunk many hours into Need for Speed Carbon and became particularly good at drift races. I spent hours and hours every weekend for about 5 years playing that same race because I was addicted to try and constantly beat my own score. I would ask my brother to try and beat my score and he could never come close. He never had the patience to play games so I challenged him that I could still beat him even if I play using my feet. The challenge was enough to keep him playing and I managed to absolutely floor him while playing the game with my feet.

Hey Etho, I remember the frogger story from when you tried to make frogger on your singleplayer server. I remember hearing it as I was just starting to get into coding in high school. Not sure how long ago that's been now, but years later, I am now graduating with a degree in Software Engineering! If I recall, the singleplayer version was very similar to the Hermitcraft version, but now you're using ravagers and other tech for the rail system, which I think makes this completely worthwhile! Especially since the project is so personal to you! Thank you for years of great content, and keep up the good work!

You should put a few frogs (on leads) at the end of the frogger game like how there are some in the original game. Also, you should connect the “on” switch to a box so it gets activated when a player puts their payment in and it starts to gear up the ravangers. Maybe you should have it set on a timer with maybe a 3,2,1 ding noise to tell the hermit to get to the start which is where a gate is that gets opened. Doing this just allows the ravangers to get flowing into the system. Also, you could always make two separate sections of ravangers, 1 for the street, the other the river part so there doesn’t end up with a gap. It would help so u don’t need to get so many more ravangers to just fill up the empty pocket. 🤷‍♀️

Some frogger thoughts: - Potions of turtle master would be fun with slowness and resistance. - Potion arrow dispensers would be interesting. Typically, it is a shorter effect time, and you could easily randomize what is sent and have it only affect the player. - Glass pillars to create some lanes could eliminate the ability to chase the ravager. -Soul sand or honey blocks would make it fun to mix up or even blue ice so that you slide around when you might not want to. - Pistons to raise or lower obstacles would be interesting. - I wonder if boats on blue ice could be used to make them move even faster? You would need a dedicated ravanger on that lane? Overall, it seems like a really fun project and game! I hope you are able to make it the way you want it and that the hermits have fun with it.
