    I had an e30 325is and absolutely loved the feel of that thing on windy mountain roads. It was poised, heavy-ish but not difficult to move around. After purchasing a Mini Cooper S I had both side by side for ~5 months and it was definitely jarring coming back into the E30 (not just acceleration but things like tightness of steering and shifting) but ultimately once you adjusted for the basic feel of each car the E30 was still massively fun to drive and especially power through corners in.

    It' a four cylinder naturally aspired engine with lots of torque. In todays power bands, yes it is slow but not for an '88 in '88. I could chirp my tires from first to second. Where it beats the comp in it's day is in handling. I used to cross the Mingus Mtns between Jerome and Prescott and the go-cart feel of the car killed those curves. American rally cars built in those days killed EU rally cars in the straight away but when you got to S curves, BMW's got the time back. Most fun car I ever owned.

    This is not a joke. I had two Alfa Romeo 155 thru the years. The 1st one was made in 1992. It came from Italy. Turn signal felt like new. It was a joy to use it when the car was 15 years old. The 2nd one was made in 1995. It came from Austria. Turn signal was terrible it felt like overused crap. That car also was 15 years old. And the moral of the story is: italians dont use turn signals. They use horn instead. :P

    Acutally BMW turn signal design is very-very bad. When you take a left turn for example, you pull the stalk down. Problem is that the stalk pops back to it’s original position instead staying in the “down” position. No wonder BMW drivers never use it, it’s ridiculous. (Edit: It doesn’t apply pre 2000 models I think)

    80s BMW: the era when kidney grills actually had the actual size of a kidney

  • @reflex3843

    @reflex3843

    3 жыл бұрын

    I own an E39 and I never realized how big they are even on this car. I'm not saying they're huge, in fact they are perfectly in proportion with the rest of the car, but when swapping the kidney frames, I noticed that my face could almost fit in one. Now compare the E39 to modern BMWs and you see how huge the kidneys have become.

    Doug, thanks so much for the trip down memory lane. I never got the E30 M3 we all coveted so ferociously. But, of the E30 series I had a 318i, 325e, 325i, 325i Convertible and the freakishly awesome 325ix with Ferguson Four Wheel Drive. I remember the check panel, the service indicator, the vacuum gauge for MPG...all of it. You missed the antenna at the front of the roof, the locking BBS center caps and the fact that the entire truck lid was unique. Of course so, back then was a 16-valve 4-cylinder. But, after putting my service manager's kids through various Ivy League schools and Berklee College of Music, I stopped driving BMW's and stayed with SVX, Spec. B and a few WRX...and my Subaru service manager put his kids through college himself. Best Regards.

    Missed some of the most amazing quirks, Doug! The rear window and C-pillar were moved back and given a shallower angle than the base 3-Series in order to reduce rear aero lift at speed. In your video, you can see the extra row of “mouse fur” parcel shelf behind the rear speakers that fills the gap to the base of the repositioned window. And the trunk lid (made of glass-reinforced plastic) was raised by about 2 inches to create smoother airflow and to improve high-speed stability. Very noticeable on the side views of the car. Also, the windshield was glued in place instead of being framed with the period-standard raised rubber gasket and metal trim. All of which helped reduce the M3’s drag coefficient to 0.33 from the base 3-Series’ 0.38.

    Doug left out some neat stuff! The top right light is missing from the check panel; it was "Engine Oil". Its missing because its function was incorporated into the oil temperature gauge on the bottom portion of the tachometer. On normal e30, that gauge was an instant economy gauge That little flashlight was pretty neat in that you didn't have to worry about batteries being dead, because it had a rechargeable battery and its receptacle in the glove box had charging posts Those chunky rear speakers are that way because this example was equipped with the premium sound option, which featured larger, 2- way speakers (the angled bit is the tweeter) By putting them in pods like that, BMW didn't have to modify the hole already cut for speakers. The base option sat pretty flush, but used dinky 4" speakers

It was cheap ($4k) but after getting it up to snuff, and trying to teach him how to drive it with that touchy clutch, I sold it and got him a 86 E30 4dr (also stick since kids need to know how to drive a stick). He was pretty upset about the whole deal but he got over it (has an E46 M3 now). It took a while for me to get over it after I saw what they're selling for now. I sold his for $7500 and it was a nice example. My only negative was I thought 1st gear was way too short.

    I had a 325i E30 and I loved the check control feature too! But I recall the operation of it a little different: when the "check" light between the gauges came on flashing, you had to look at the panel at the mirror to see what part was not working correctly. Then you confirm by pressing the check button and the flashing "check" goes out. When you press that button, all the light should come on to indicate that check control itself is working correctly.

    I had an e28 with a lot of the same features, a couple things: the “Check” light flashes because the brake lights are one of the things it checks, and it can’t do that until you put your foot on the brake. If a check light stays on, that light will flash in the dash until you push the check button in the ceiling. Also, in the little button pod in the dash, the numbers can be used to set an immobilizer code that will actually set an alarm off if you try and start it too many times without entering the code, kinda cool!

    It’s crazy to think there was a period in time where these were basically worthless. No one wanted them, on the second hand market they were just 4-5k. Now they are worth more than everything I own 🤦‍♂️ Edit: I guess a few of you don’t believe me. Go to VINWiki and lookup The April Fools Joke I Forgot About. Ed talks about one that was purchased in the early 2000s for $3500

    To me, the E30 is the greatest car design of all time. And the history to it, especially that of how the touring model came about is about the sickest story in car engineering there is. This M3 is such a beauty. In Germany, there is just no way you can possibly still get your hand on one of those, anymore. Every single orihinal one is owned by a true enthusiast, by now.

    I went with my dad on a business trip to London in 1990 and got to ride in a NEW E30 M3! We were picked up at Heathrow and driven around in a co-worker’s Euro spec Red/Grey 1990 M3. A phenomenal experience and probably a big part of my car obsession today! I’ve been waiting to see Doug review one for years. One difference I see: the Euro spec had a manual sun roof crank handle, not electronic buttons! Great job Doug!

    I had the less glamorous e30 320i which had no power steering. The six cylinder engine was sublime, and the previous owner had installed M-Technik suspension so it went round corners like it was on rails. Had to scrap it off though due to financially non-viable body rot underneath.

    Awesome cars! PS. missed a cool feature on the onboard computer. (CODE), pass code enabled immobilizer. Once enabled need pass code to start car. We in SA never received the M3, BMW SA instead made their own version called the 333i, Basically e30 2 door with 3.3/3.5 M30 Engines .

  • @georgek.2711
    @georgek.27113 жыл бұрын

    The buttons with the numbers 1, 10,100,1000 were used to set the code with the button on that screen. When you had the code set, then the car needed the code to start up otherwise the engine would only crank continuously, but it wouldn't start up. This "code" button should have been explained in the video Doug, and you did not do that also at the e34 m5 video, which has the same button, with the same function. It's a shame you didn't mention because it's a cool feature that 99% of the cars nowadays still don't have. Anyway, nice video!

    Great review Doug! - really love this car too!.... but all the features of this e30 M3 were available more than 20 years earlier on an Alfa Romeo Giulia. I have to believe that Claus Luthe who designed it was a genuine Alfa fan and respectful of Giorgetto Giugiaro, who designed the 105 Bertone. Forward hinge hood, sliding front seats, even the hood pull latch are Alfa. I am a BMW driver, have been for 2 decades, but I also have a '73 Alfa 2000 gtv, and understand why even the great BMW had to follow them, as drivers cars... pre-fiat Alfas, there is nothing like them.

    That damn green bar oil maintenance light was a dealer scam. You had to pay the dealer to reset it if you changed your own oil. If not you got to bask in a warm red glow...which remained on while driving. The dealer wanted $50 for a ten second reset. I had a dozen of the 3-series in the late 80s and 90s so bought the tool myself and saved a ton. Lots of memories in this video, love these cars, thanks Doug.
