What a special experience, for Doug to be branded as a "Son" by Jay! I personally am thrilled! Doug really is a star in the next generation of automotive enthusiast/journalist. And I think that Jay must be delighted to have knowledgeable and passionate younger people like Doug carrying the flame forward.
Doug is so much more entertaining being himself rather than his normal car review self!
My 2nd car was a first gen RX-7. Now I can brag that I drove a model of car before Jay Leno did! Still my all-time favorite car. Thanks for the nostalgia!
I worked for the company that made the glass sunroof for Mazda for the first gen RX-7. From the factory it came with a painted steel panel. The glass top was available from the dealer as a Mazda-labeled replacement accessory. The company was Pacific T-Top in Huntington Beach, CA. We also added T-Tops to new Mustangs and Camaros/Firebirds, early-mid 80's.

Seeing doug come this far from his first few videos is amazing. It’s also a message to us viewers to look back as to how far we have come in our life and career.
The sound guy of this video is beyond great. The door closing sound is so bouncy yet deep, it gave me a shock after 4 glasses of wine. Every bit of this episode overflows with passion - Jay, Doug, the sound guy and every maker on this video. This video really exemplified why car is so special. Everyone probably has stories to tell about a few cars they encountered, and fortunate ones like Jay and Doug probably have many more stories to share.
Good to see Doug get that affirmation and compliments from his dad at the end of the video.
FEW times in my life has a video made me feel as good as this has. Truly like father like son. What chemistry between them.
OMG! I love RX-7's. I learned to drive with my mother's first gen 78' and 85'. I then owned my own 84' up until I moved to Montréal. I really miss these amazing vehicles. I bought my 84' in 2005 and it had an 80's cell phone in it still!
Great to see Jay and Doug back doing a review again together. I grew up with that Rx7. I always wanted one. It was one of the coolest cars on the road back then. Thanks guys !!
It was VERY interesting seeing Jay and Doug together. Jay is obviously an encyclopedia of car knowledge and his thoughts and speech come slower, yet you have Doug who has a very vast car knowledge, but not nearly as in depth as Jay. Doug speaks so quickly and you can tell that he has to calm himself down so he doesn't overwhelm Jay in conversation. A bit of a father and son dynamic. Hope we get more of these vids in the future!

It's has very classic lines. My Corvette C5 Z06 is similar in that it has a simple, classic silhouette. Neither will ever look old. It's easy for the Mazda, as the rotary engine is so compact. The 'Vette does it by mounting the engine as far back as possible for weight distribution, with the transaxle behind the driver.
I just came in from washing my '81 RX7 (that my Dad bought new) and see Jay and Doug driving one! After 42 years I still love every drive - most fun you can have with 100 horsepower! I bet having a video of Jay driving it increases it's value a good bit.

I had a 1984 RX-7, bought new. Loved it. 22:54 Shelf life for me was 70k then I was putting in a 1/2 quart of oil every tank of gas. Seals were rapidly going away. The fix in the day was to just pop in a rebuilt motor. To service the seals cost as much as a rebuilt motor, but you got it back in a day. Dunno why, but this brought on a huge sense of nostalgia. I remember my Dad bought a metallic blue RX-7 SE and me being so thrilled with the smoothness of the engine, the high redline and the general sportiness of the car. Bear in mind that crazy fast cars were in the 5-6 sec 0-60 mph range at the time. So this car, which did the run in the high 7's, was a legitimately quick car. I had an early Mazda R100 and an RX3, both had buzzers that sounded at 7000 RPM to keep you from over revving it, this was before electronic engine controls that keep that from happening today. The oil consumption was due to the car pumping a bit of oil into the carb to mix with the gas to lubricate the tip seals, it was just something you lived with and not a bother at all.
