It was VERY interesting seeing Jay and Doug together. Jay is obviously an encyclopedia of car knowledge and his thoughts and speech come slower, yet you have Doug who has a very vast car knowledge, but not nearly as in depth as Jay. I have a friend who's first car when she went to college was a new first gen rx7 - her dad was a proud Japanese man who'd done well in America and wanted to flex that he could put his daughter in a cool new japanese car as well as send her to college. On top of that, they lived in Compton. I can think of few more badass moves for an old Japanese man in the hood.

It's has very classic lines. My Corvette C5 Z06 is similar in that it has a simple, classic silhouette. Neither will ever look old. It's easy for the Mazda, as the rotary engine is so compact. The 'Vette does it by mounting the engine as far back as possible for weight distribution, with the transaxle behind the driver.

I had a 1984 RX-7, bought new. Loved it. 22:54 Shelf life for me was 70k then I was putting in a 1/2 quart of oil every tank of gas. Seals were rapidly going away. The fix in the day was to just pop in a rebuilt motor. To service the seals cost as much as a rebuilt motor, but you got it back in a day. I had a Mazda guy, in LosGatos CA quote me $3500 to slide a rebuild in.

Dunno why, but this brought on a huge sense of nostalgia. I remember my Dad bought a metallic blue RX-7 SE and me being so thrilled with the smoothness of the engine, the high redline and the general sportiness of the car. Bear in mind that crazy fast cars were in the 5-6 sec 0-60 mph range at the time. So this car, which did the run in the high 7's, was a legitimately quick car. As with most vintage cars, I can recall the smell of it when it was new. Thanks for this trip down memory lane Doug and Jay!

I had an early Mazda R100 and an RX3, both had buzzers that sounded at 7000 RPM to keep you from over revving it, this was before electronic engine controls that keep that from happening today. The oil consumption was due to the car pumping a bit of oil into the carb to mix with the gas to lubricate the tip seals, it was just something you lived with and not a bother at all.
