Perhaps apocryphal, but an early NASCAR driver -- maybe "Fireball" Roberts -- was supposed to have explained that "understeer" was what happened when he hit the speedway wall with the front of his car, and "oversteer" happened when he hit the wall with the back of the car. Steering by throttle still sounds mighty fun.

Very cool! I love furniture with history just like cars. A restaurant owner customer of mine just gifted me a solid mahogany church pew, just a 3 persons size from a 1860’s church that no longer exists. He took over a building to open another restaurant location and previous tenants left 5 of them behind he kept two long 9 footers to use as waiting benches.

Almost 17 years later the scene where Doc cold-starts still makes me shed some tears

the cool part of the old cars is that the interior looks like you're sitting on the sofa in your living room. and the comfort remains the same even at 60 miles per hour on a rough street.

I actually met Paul Newman when I was very young at the Bronx Botanica garden.

Two old boys out enjoying a car and trading stories. Love it! He sure knows his Hudsons!!

“You got a lot of stuff, kid.” One of the greatest lines in animated films.

When the “Cars” movie came out, Doc Hudson became my favorite character. Paul Newman brought Doc to life in a very special way. I love Hudsons, a Ford dealership I used to work at when I was young started out as a Hudson dealership. Thanks for sharing the real life Fabulous Hudson Hornet with us! Great video!

My favorite was the dirt race, where Lightning tears away and Doc just sits there, then says to Mater, "come on". Old dog ready to teach the new dog a trick or two - classic.

Jay is right. Some these old timers should write down their knowledge of these cars. It will sadly pass with them. Great video as always. Awesome a guy like Jay is around to share all these cars and history behind them.

Jay needs to negotiate a 'book' deal and have a team of writers interview all these car guys. Get their best tales and anecdotes then create a compendium of historical car stories. At the same time film each storyteller with their vehicle and create long-format content.

Just hearing all the details from guys who street raced in the 60s makes me wish I was born a couple generations ago. You could buy a Hornet from some shmuck and not feel like you were tarnishing history when you risked the car's well-being racing? Count me the eff in! My dad told me he used to take his dad's Impala out on a long dirt road near their house and get the thing over 90... WHEN HE WAS TWELVE. Literally sitting on a textbook tp see over the giant dash of the thing.

This is making me cry. Rip pul Newman you will always be remembered as our doc Hudson.

My uncle raced Hudsons on the quarter mile tracks in the Chicago area. I was too young to know anything about it. Later he told me that they were powerful, light enough, handled well, and 2nd gear was just right for the short tracks.

One of the best interviews of the series Jay. The conversation started off a little slow in the beginning, but as it progressed to the driving segment, you guys both really clicked. You guys both told a couple of really good personal stories about owning Hudson's back in the day. Two true car guys just having a genuine conversation, great episode Jay.

There is not really anyplace else that we can get this stuff. I hope that Jay realizes how many people that he touches beyond clicks, and how much that we appreciate it. And what an exciting guest.

Man, they're just lounging in that thing when they drive it. Completely different animal than anything you see on a lot today.

I love the old Flathead six-bangers. Jay hit the starter and said, these Hudson's always start right up. I couldn't tell if the engine had started. As they pulled away, you still couldn't hear the engine run. They were just that smooth.

And nowadays every engineer looks at an inline 6 and says "turbo it". I think BMW is one of the last. Lexus, Jaguar, and a few others said bye bye to them. Volvo used to have transverse mounted ones too.

My grandma and grandpa had dozens of hudson through the years and they would drive their Mercedes and both would slam the doors so hard because they were use to their hudsons. My uncles sold the two they had after both had past because they didn't think anyone in the family would want them. I was pissed they new i loved working on them with my grabdparents they sold both for 3000 in 99

It’s amazing seeing this giant metal beast of a car roaring down the straights going close to 100, where as my 51 gmc with a straight six struggles to hold 55mph

Really awesome car. Hudson was the first manufacturer to actually have factory involvement in NASCAR

Smokie was a genius . He was designing a (3) cylinder, supercharged and turbocharged engine . Over 300 HP, and he predicted 80 mpg .

Are you talking about that Smokie's hot engine that combusts the gasoline at significantly hotter temperatures, which supposedly causes power and fuel efficiency to dramatically increase? EDIT: It also pressurizes the air-fuel charge.

Read about John DeLorean. He continued work after the entrapment case, camless engines and laser ignition systems. The later is being considered for use in rockets and other space devices.

Fun Fact: The Hudson Hornet featured an Inline 6 engine, despite them using V8 sound clips in the Cars Movies... Guess Americans are really attached to their V8s...

I could listen to this guy and Jay talk about old car stories all day. This is one of the best episodes from the show for sure. Number 1 for me is Jay's 7 liter Ford episode.

Yeah, Jay said something about filling out the order sheet for his dad and checking off "Muffler Delete." His dad flipped out when he started the car and was squawking about the noise until Jay told him, "No, that's special order. You paid extra for that!" ;^)

The fact that the Cars movie had Doc winning the Piston Cup in 51’ 52’ 53’ and the Hudson actually won the NASCAR Championship in those same years. I love this movie even more now and this guy giving all this history and info on the car is so much better. Rip Paul Newman you really gave this car so much more meaning to the younger generation❤️

Lol that sounds like a mistake i would make

The moments where you can see other, more modern cars outside through the windows or through special "outdoor cam" moments really give off a vibe of a person (or in this case a car) lost in time-space continuum and that one moment where the said person goes to the future and kinda sees stuff around him, but still continues to be stylish and unique just as he had casually been before in what is now considered past. It's difficult to explain.

I can just hear Docs voice... RIP Doc Hudson, we miss you.

What great stories this guy has and such a pleasant attitude and demeanor. When was the last time your passenger was able to "cross their legs" while driving down the road?? OMGosh, no seat belts, bench seats, and VENT windows all going for our Sunday afternoon drive. Loved this video down memory lane. Thanks Jay and thank you Dave!! Jim.

My 64 rambler american 2dr hardtop seatbelts were still a option. When i would get pulled over the cops would try to write no seatbelt tickets and i would show them the option book and show them seatbelts optional. Once I put a 5.0 in it i added old vintage b52 lap belts all around in it

My Dad and my Uncle Nelson owned Hudson's. My first experience at high speed in Dad's Hudson was before I could walk. Dad , Mom and I were on our way to Illinois when Dad blew a tire and took off across the California desert. Because it was so low the car didn't flip over and we all lived. My Uncle never used 2nd gear in his. 1st to 3rd for ever. I can still remember the "Star" on the end of the shift lever. I would stand on the front seat between my Mom and Dad.

Here's a quote from doc Hudson "when I got put back together I went back expecting a big welcome, you know what they said, you're history moves right on to the next rookie standing in line. There was a lot left in me I never got a chance to show. I keep that, to remind me never to go back. I just never expected that that world would, would find me here".

Inline sixes are underappreciated. They have a lot of redeeming qualities. I can't wait to finish the one I'm building for my 36 coupe!

All i can say about that episode is it was FABULOUS ! Easily one of my new favorite episodes. I really love to hear about the history of early NASCAR.

Thanks Jay for having Dave and his Hudson on your show. You're bringing automotive history to life!

Sounds are underappreciated, and they usually aren't included in museums. First thing to go. I appreciated a docent firing up a '48 Tucker Torpedo so I could hear one run many years ago. San Diego Auto Museum.

Been watching you ever since you took over The ToNight Show from Johnny. 31 minutes went by like 5 minutes listening to old history. Thank you Jay

But if I had one of those you bet I'd be driving it everywhere!

That was better than all the interviews on the Tonight show. You two were chatting like brothers. I loved it. Thanks Jay.

I would watch NASCAR if they raced real cars that you could buy, and if there was room in the rules for real innovation.

Maximum, maximum, maximum they go and gone far beyond the scope of relating to production cars. I've wished for years they dropped the engine configuration down to six cylinders of most any shape. Would be easier in theory on so many aspects but the shear mph folks carry sway, gotta please the absolutes the fans seem to crave.

they just have to comeback to pre 72 rules and all would be well. they never will because the overpriced crap they sell to people nowadays could not in any capacity be raced. thats why they became full race cars

NASCAR is killed by rules now. Nothing like a true stock dealer car these days. They should give them a money and weight limit and thats it.

August Sawzak I have said the same thing but sadly NASCAR will never do it again so if we want a racing series like old school NASCAR we have to make it

Handsome Hudson Hornet. Hard to imagine it burning up the track. This'll sound weird, but I love the door click of a well-made car. How did cars of that era manage to pack so much more leg room and luggage space in the same length?

Its the Dashboard. Older cars from the early 50's had dashboards that were only 6-8" deep and the steeper windshield angle means you can sit closer to it while retaining adequate headroom. New cars sometimes feel like they have 2 foot deep dashboards which are chock full of electronics bulky plastic and the air conditioning ducts. The seats are also configured for a more upright dining room chair seating position in older cars which takes up less floor space than a reclined legs-out racecar position.

Sort of. My 1950 Chevy, admittedly is smaller when compared to Hudsons and Cadillacs, is the exact same external dimensions as a 2010 Toyota Camry except the Chevy is 3" taller. You would be amazed at how much room is taken up by the pointless plastic trim in new cars.

Kyle you are so right. So many newer cars have wasted space for the plastic trim and interior styling elements. So often when I sit in a new vehicle, the artificial built up hight of the console on the center tunnel is ridiculous and intrudes into my leg room.

Mostly these older cars are bigger than modern ones but on the inside newer cars have to conform to many more safety regulations so they pack them full of tech making cabin space smaller

Amazing how solid the sound was when the hood was closed. Real metal.

The accuracy the movie had compared to the real-life cars is incredible! Also I love how the big red engines really look like the heart of the car!

R.I.P. Doc Hudson 1951-2009 He won 3 Piston Cups 1951-1952-1953 He crashed while attempting to win his 4th Piston Cup in 1954 Met Lightning McQueen in 2006 He died in 2009 due to another crash while he trained McQueen for the 2010 Piston Cup

If only Hudson was still alive they would be the best car company in racing.

*Back in the late-1960's my dad had a beat to death, green '50's 'Hudson' 'Hornet', that he had bought new and raced in local "Go fast, turn left" races Back in the Day. Pop kept the poor old thing in my grandfather's garage. Every year my grandfather would say, "Get that damned old Hudson out of my garage!"... And every year my father would tell him that he was going to rebuild it, "Next year"... Well, "Next year" never arrived lol. But, my cousin bought it and did a beautiful job over a 5 year period rebuilding and restoring Her, it really was like a new Hudson. My father made the comment that, "This looks just like it did when it rolled out of the showroom floor!", it really was THAT good. I'm so glad that there are men with the capability, and more importantly, the honor to bring these old American automobiles back to their original condition. Nothing against modern mass production cars, but, you have to admit that they are almost all alike now, very little personality in a modern automobile.*

Your age?

My high school pastor owned Hudson’s. He would brag about having twin carbs. He also said many times, “If a Hudson would start, it would run 100mph, and if it wouldn’t run 100mph, if you turned it off, it wouldn’t start again”. Nice old car.
