Arborist here- grafting or bending that tree won’t work, it’s too old. It is a beautiful old Spanish oak but sadly it will have to go(maybe repurpose the wood for a ranch project?) but definitely leave the side shoots going up, though i would recommend cutting the weakest or smallest one, and keeping the healthiest one. Otherwise there will be competition between the two and can result poorly and potentially even cause them to grow at bad angles.

Hey Matt, I’m a landscaper for my family greenhouse nursery business in tennessee, the best solution is cut the larger tree that bends out, leave the smaller ones next to it and plant some other trees in that area. You will never get a tree that old to graft as it’s generally done with trees that are a lot younger and still growing

Ya I second this. Oaks will sprout out when cut. Overall pretty hard to kill. Oaks are also pretty susceptible to disease and fungus and will act as a decayer. That does look like a big tree and is likely to take other smaller trees out. So keep it simple and expect to have a big mess to clean up. Good luck. Maybe get a arborist and a pro faller to come check it out. I'm in California but I know some.

Josh is right. You can only graft if it's green growing wood. The sap goes up and down in the bark and it puts on extra wood just under that. The old wood won't ever reconnect and once the bark is cut all the way around, you've ring-barked the tree and it dies.

With regard to your tree. You can hire a tree picker to come out and scoop up the entire thing, roots and all, and replant it twenty or thirty feet away. Or just spin it and put it right back in the same spot but facing the other direction. Seriously, there are these big rigs on the backs of trucks that have giant hydraulic shovels that clamshell open to wrap around the tree and then big hydraulic rams force blades into the ground and dig up the entire tree and a big cone of dirt about 6-10 feet across that contains most of its roots.

It's pricey but you can turn the tree around 180. It's growing towards it's dominate light source. If they were to pluck it up and turn it around, it would try to lean back the way it was and eventually stand up straight. It would also have a really cool S bend in the bottom. Lots of tree relocation companies to choose from and it would be a little cheaper since they won't be transporting it anywhere.

As for the tree. If you cut such a large tree, the trunk will not be strong enough and can easily break in the first wind. You can gradually bend the trunk. You have to create a fixed point on the opposite side (for example, you hammer an old rail or traverse, a little diagonally and enough deep into the ground) and use the winch to bend the tree a little. For example, some cheap hand winch, which you leave here so that the rope is still taut and holds the tree. The trunk needs to be lined with boards, any has not been damaged and I recommend using a steel cable. Wait a month, for example, and bend it a little again. Pretty gradually slowly.

Tree guy here...I would wait till the tree defoliates during winter then chop it down to the point it is out of your way. Come spring all the energy stored in the roots will most likely create new growth. You should notice one new branch will be more active (the sucker) trim off the other growth so that the tree is forced to cater to the sucker. This will keep the tree alive and you can train the new growth Hope that helps guy.

That allows the fumes to push away from the low pressure area at the back of the Bronco so when you have your back window down you're not going to be sucking exhaust into the cab. You can also do a side dump in front of the tire, but rear dump and dumping under the truck will get fumes into the cab.

I got a couple things, firstly, make sure you have some flex hose for each section or the vibration and what not will likely damage it. You can also use high pressure suction hose which is like a very ridged flex hose. Secondly you should definitely be bringing that exhaust back to be refunded and then take it to a shop that can do quality work. Lastly not only will a graft like that not take, it would be extremely difficult and dangerous to attempt since with all the bends it the tree there would be different sections under tension and compression and that tree is probably 10,000 pounds and effectively has a sail on top of it, it would probably be easier to cut the tree and balance your f350 on the trailer hitch on the stump. I’m exaggerating but I would definitely recommend just cutting it and having a company come plant a mature tree in a more convenient spot

  • @PathosBedlam

    @PathosBedlam

    2 жыл бұрын

Agreed. All very good advice. The tree definitely has to go. There's plenty of them left around and it way too unsafe to attempt a graft. The only other idea I had while watching, was that the hose reel for the fire truck should be mounted so that it is inside the bed of the truck. If it hangs off the side, it can get caught on stuff and be damaged right when you need it the most.

Now you're into the fine detail stuff that comes with finishing things out and it may not be as eye popping as putting on the roof or digging the hole for your underground bunker in the garage, or starting the install for the pool (it would be nice to know how that's coming along BTW! ;-) ), but I think many would be curious to see snippets of how the detail work is coming along. It doesn't have to be a long winded video but little teasers from time to time would be cool.

Please calculate! Second I think that the red oak would mill into a very nice bar and or gun holder to rest biopods on ! Just a thought from Wisconsin lol!

Unfortunately a tree spade wouldn't be feasible for that size of tree. The general rule of thumb with tree spades is that the spade needs to be 10 times larger than the diameter of the tree that you wish to move. If Matt is accurate with the 2 foot diameter of the tree then you would need a tree spade that was at least 20 feet.

Take a huge winch and a chain / cable bend the crooked part of the tree all the way down into the root system chain it back with a strap around the tree not the chain or cable because they will grow into the tree trunk and leave it to reestablish itself over some time it will settle out of your path it's called training your tree usually done on younger trees but it will work on older trees it just takes longer

Do not think you can cut and graft an older tree like that, the old wood inside will not heal, only new growth will heal and new growth is just the outer ring. Here is an idea though, hire a tree mover, they can just pick up the tree, clock it about 180 degrees and place it back in the same hole.

In my botany class we learned about how someone took a knife and scored around an old oak tree to kill it. Most oak species have structures that run up the trunk that carry nutrients through the trunk. The issue is if they are cut they most likely not heal and grown back. I have seen were trees have been forced to lean a different direction but talking with a feller would be the best option.

  • @nickjanson3852

Graphing is normally done to young trees. I've seen comments to dig a trench behind the tree and pull it straight then anchor it down which would work on a younger tree that don't have established roots. On a tree that size, you'll run the risk of shocking the tree and killing it so its best to cut down it and let the smaller younger trees next to it grow and fill that space.

Cut down the main tree, it still has three large sprouts, so you won't be killing it, just severely pruning it. The other stuff won't work. So cut it at the bottom of the bend and tar the stump to stop any disease.

THE TREE ! Yes you can cut the limb off. But you should wait untill after this first cold spill when the sap has gone down into the roots . So it will not bleed out . Then you should place some tree bandage or paint tar on the open cut to seal it . Then problem solved .

That's called grafting. A tree that big has to have a much smaller graft branch in it. Too big of a branch grafted in will kill the roots. Early spring would be the best, so long as it goes dormant (leaves all fall off). Do it right before the trees all leaf out so it sends nutrients from the roots into the new portion that's been grafted in. Plenty of videos on how to do it. The trees are both bent that way for a reason though. Strong regular winds, etc. Might be better just to cut it down.

The problem is the cambium layer on the tree. The middle of the tree (the "wood") brings up water and gets rid of waste. The only part that is alive, for all practical purposes, is the cambium layer. That's the thin layer, just below the bark. That's why Porcupines kill trees when they ring the tree. You've done some damage already, if it were possible at all, I doubt it would survive. Cut it down and send it to a sawmill. When the wood dries, now you have an excuse to buy that wood bed step side you always wanted. Just don't tell Mere...😁

You can train the tree wintout cutting it as well! You can just keep tension on the tree in the opposite direction and it will slowly move, with cutting the tree you have to be careful about girdling the thing which is a guaranteed death of the tree, if you do cut it i would opt for a smaller cut than what you showed, and also you will have to protect the tree from infection(whether that be bugs or molds etc)
