Her D&D Character Turned Into a Mary Sue’s Hype Girl - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

It looks like Baldur's Gate 3 is out and I've got it on my to-play list! I just need to get my new campaign through it's first session... THEN we get to this other adventure. It might be the closest thing I've got to being a D&D player right now.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

I had a player pick a Halfling for my Hell's Vengeance Pathfinder campaign (evil campaign set in a country where lore-wise Halflings are commonly held as slaves throughout the entire society). I told him several times in no uncertain terms that he will be considered a slave... and he totally ran with it, deciding to actually be our evil paladin's slave for real... with writ of ownership and all during session 0 - fortunately, the paladin player never abused that status, but it came up during roleplay that the halfling wasn't allowed to eat at the same table as the other party members or got send on some menial errands more often than others. The player wholeheartedly embraced it for some reason and when the paladin died in combat later on, he even tried to get him back to his family and get the family's permission to carry out their late son's duties by staying with the party and their mission. It can work - but I admit, I found it a bit weird as a DM when my players wholeheartedly embraced that idea.

Intro Story: Having tieflings being treated somewhat negatively is kind of expected in D&D, sure. But making a player who chooses to play one figure out their starting stats completely differently from everyone else to nerf themselves, and then allowing the other players to treat the player like a prisoner is pretty awful. I'd also almost defend the way the player was introduced to the party, if it weren't for that high Stealth check ultimately failing; feels very railroady to me.

Oh, I heard the Disintegration story one. What the DM was doing was getting revenge on the Player for not being a mind reader. "I guess there was one piece of context I left out but the reason why we had to take a pause with our D&D sessions is because of some random creeper guy who walked in to the shop during our sessions. It was the DM in my story and I who are running the games that night. When the players took a break, we both stay behind and worked on our tables setting up Minis and maps for the next part of the session etc. Apparently the creeper guy walked up to her and started talking to her and I didn't realize that she was uncomfortable because I was focused on doing what I needed to do at the table. I was in the room the entire time and they were no more than 10 feet from me and all I could hear was just the guy talking about D&D to her. Turns out the guy at one point tried to hug her which I never saw but I believe her when she says that's what happened. Apparently he was drunk and making her feel comfortable and she was trying to give me looks but I was focused on my table so I wasn't looking at her. After the guy ended up walking away without any incident she told me that she was trying to tell me that she needed help (with her looks) and I told her I had no idea that was the case because I didn't hear anything bad from that conversation nor did I see the guy do anything. I definitely take an L for not... I don't know, hyper focusing on a conversation between two adults? I was in the room the whole time and if the guy tried anything I would have been right there to help her but I didn't visually see anything happen. She made me feel really shit for it. I'm not saying that she killed me twice in last night's game because of that instant specifically but... I don't know, if she's still upset by the situation I understand her feeling that way but I really hope she wasn't taking it out on me in game"

About the second story, I agree with the overall conclusion and that the OP should've been more direct, but I do think it's worth pointing out that when you have a more passive or peaceful character paired with a character that always jumps to the nuclear option, there is an imbalance in which the nuclear player's actions get prioritized. Even if you follow the sentiment of "don't police other people's characters just experience the world as your own", that's kind of hard to do when you have a player that destroys the other options for how to proceed, before the party can even discuss it. Obviously if it's the choice of the group at large, that's one thing, but it's very possible other people in the group had issues with the player, especially considering one of the anecdotes was them trying to kill another player out of nowhere. If the player with murder hobo tendencies is always being given the go head, allowed to act first, seemingly with little to no consequences, in a way that prevents other players from really having a choice in how they engage with the story. I would say that's an issue that the DM has a responsibility to address. It's definitely not nearly as extreme or unfair as other stories (thankfully) the op did instigate in some situations, but chalking it up to "everyone was equally in the wrong here", doesn't seem quite right to me.

Third Story: Alright, so P wants to have a small army of babies to fight on their behalf? And they have about 30 of them? Cool. 6 of them each count as a swarm-type creature. They deal 1d4 physical non-magical damage and have 6 HP per swarm (1 HP per baby) and an AC of, like, 8, and can do 1 Action or Bonus Action and a 20-foot movement speed. Commanding them uses an Action by P, and when they command the swarms, 1d6-1 actually do what they ask, the others doing random actions (not moving, moving in a random direction, or even moving to attack other party members; they're baby monstrosities, after all, they don't know what they're doing). If the campaign is high-enough level, the babies will all be dead within a couple of combat encounters. Not only that, but now P is responsible for feeding and caring for up to 30 baby monsters? I'm sure the party will -love- dealing with the cost of that, and if they're as uncontrollable out of combat as they would be during combat, the party would probably also not want them around for too long out of fear of the babies just randomly attacking them because they're hungry or whatever. Make the idea of having a small army of baby monsters a massive liability for P, and also make them an absolute pain in the ass to control; consequences for their decision to make that their whole character's purpose for existing.

  • @thenichollsworth

This can really backfire if P is the type that not only loves your idea but insists on making every baby a character out of combat. Even worse if they're a "So I'm a Spider, so What" fan.

I was reminded of something that one of my brother's friends, Dylan (because that's his real name, and I want to warn folks about people like this). Keep in mind, I knew him back during the 3.5E era; Dylan was one of those subtle nightmare DMs; when you played in his games, he wouldn't limit your character options, but if you played anything other than human then it was basically like playing the game on hard mode, he would warp the world the make your character's life terrible, this is made more baffling when you realize that he was great at playing PCs and was respectful of the worlds he was playing in; you're probably thinking that he's probably not all that bad as a DM, sure he makes it harder if you aren't playing a human, but at least he respects the worlds he plays in; oh you sweet summer child. Whenever Dylan was asked to play the part of a temporary DM when the actual DM had to go and do things for more than a few minutes he would he immediately warp the world to be biased against non-human PCs, and keep at it until it was time for him to relinquish the reigns. Oh, and Dyland would literally only play human characters, and the only time he wouldn't was when the structure of the game literally forbid him from playing a human character. And just to remind you, this was 3.5 Edition, most of the cool and unique features Humans have in 5E hadn't been introduced yet, and Humans were pretty vanilla back then. And when I saw I say he warped the world for non-human Player Characters, I don't mean he just made combat a nightmare to deal with, that was part of it, but he would also make all the NPCs hostile to your character, even if they were literally the same race as your character or had prior characterization (that he was there for, might I point out) that was completely different from how he played the character. He would hike up the prices of magic items and potions at shops, when you could buy them, if you were not playing a human, and would allow the human characters to buy those same magic items at a heavy discount. When finding gear in dungeons and the like, non-human PCs would find underpowered gear or bargain bin trash that was barely with selling for the coin, while human characters would consistently find gear that was level appropriate or could potentially make them overpowered. When Dylan was playing the part of temp DM, the actual DM often had to walk back a number of decisions Dylan made during his time as DM, he would act annoyed about his contributions to the game basically being reset but never really fought it because he understood the DM was the ultimate authority on matters like that. I'm sure I could have some stories about Dylan, but I've basically blocked those experiences in a vault in my mind because I just don't want to try recalling them because of how bad those experiences were. I hope Dylan has improved as a player, and actually tries having a bit more variety with his characters, but I highly doubt that has happened. It's been years since I last even saw or talked to him, and I am currently considering that a blessing.

Yeah in one of my roleplay heavy parties we had a wizard who was on the darker side. To be fair, they were a legacy member of this party and this storyline was cleared by all the party members then. We were having Wizard and my character (was also legacy member) play out a storyline of only having recently escaped from their very war torn home and still being in that really intense mindset (with yes, some ptsd, especially from my character who had such a similar incident happen earlier in their life so lots of flashbacks). This kind of thing came into a clash when we recruited two new players. While they both had their own amazing backstories and were very good for such a roleplay heavy table/game, I guess we didn’t communicate well enough the intensity of the dark mental state our characters still hadn’t moved out of (it was planned that they would slowly heal but it had only been, in-game, less than a week for our characters, not enough time). Anyway, so there was an incident where the wizard killed some bandits/mercenaries and my character just stood by and let him, only callously covering the bodies with tarps after for the sake of the town we were in and their sensibilities. That was how the session ended. We ended up chatting for the week leading up to the next session about it and organized out our thoughts and what, above board, we were planning for our characters as well as rehashed limits and comfort levels. We decided not to retcon anything given that it was actually a good character arc opportunity but we did have our character groups sit down and have the discussion in character that we players had put of character. It worked out and I’m glad to say it made for a really good moment and we ended up being able to give my own character more motivation to change by giving himself more people he wanted to change for (he is much older than the group and has basically taken on a role of mentor among them for it, so he is motivated to try to be better for his students). But yeah, I want to point out that it’s super important to discuss stuff like this. This was a group of all adults doing this. I also play in a group as one of the adults in a dnd table that is primarily those under 18 (other adult is the dm’s older brother who also helps be the adult figure of the group). In that table? I have already had to be firm about speaking up when stuff stops being ok or comfortable for all. Both me and the other adult both have. We aren’t harsh about it but yes, it’s super important to speak up and be clear and firm about it, more so if you are dealing with dark subjects which a lot of dnd storylines and character arcs will delve into. So yeah, just a reminder, communication is absolutely key and important for any dnd session, regardless of age.

I have some experience with two of those stories as well. I used to be in a west marches server and there was one dm who was renowned for being tough. I've had many times where my character dies in his games and at some point it got to the point where I was feeling quite targeted by him. The peak of this is when I was playing my brass dragonborn paladin, who is fire resistant. We started combat with two dragons(higher level session) and immediately the red dragon ran up to us and fire breathed us all. I take more than my max hp and go down. The next dragon rends my unconscious body and kills me before I even get to make a death save. I just muted my mic and didn't say anything for the rest of the 2 hour session. Once combat was done, my character was brought back and rewards given out. I just left the call. I didn't record any xp or items. I just wanted to forget that session happened. And I never joined his game again. The other story I identified with is the one with the healer who didn't get along with the party. I was basically in the same situation. Playing a human healer who was morally opposed to killing sentient creatures. My party was a bunch of murder hobos. It got to the point where in a tavern brawl the barbarian took out their axe and decapitated someone while I and their leader were trying to talk. I left the tavern, left the party, left the session. Next time I came back with a rat folk who would play much nicer with the parties bullshit. The game didn't last much longer for me though.

That story with all the TF2 names was familiar cuz I was a Cleric like that. At first it was just small stuff because I was trying to stop the party from tormenting my home town and breaking laws. Later on, though, it was because the DM began holding my powers over my head if I didn’t constantly go against the party and their more chaotic plans that I actually liked. I haven’t played a cleric since because of not wanting to be The Moral Compass again. @@TheMightyBattleSquid Yeah, the big issue was we were playing PF1E. I was a cleric of Sarenrae (a NG goddess) and was NG myself. Most of the party was either CG or CN however. One of the most blatant moments of using me to reign them in was when the DM actually gave the party like, 3 options for how to bring a character back from the dead. A couple of which were morally grey, but not Evil or against the tenets of my goddess under most circumstances. But no matter which plan I said “that sounds feasible, let’s do it. I want our friend back”, the dm kept saying “ah ah ah, you’ll lose your powers”. It actually led to a heated argument in (and partly out) of game as a result between me and the other players even though I was actively saying “we do these plans, apparently I’ll lose my powers and be completely useless in this entire dungeon we’re in the middle of”. It was REALLY annoying, and was one of the final factors that led to me retiring the character.

@@ArcCaravan Oh absolutely agree. I mentioned it in a separate comment, but the most blatant was him basically using me to Revival Block the party from saving our dead dwarf friend because every method the DM gave the party, he went around and said “But if you let ANY of these plans happen, you lose your powers, hahahaha”. My next character was SUPPOSED to be non-religious (with very minimal religion outside a sense of community), but the DM had me instead Re-class and Re-Gear Up an NPC as a Half Religious class (an Inquisitor, for reference, I believe. Been almost 2 years since). I had, no fun playing it, and was forced to since it was either sit through character creation for level 8/9 (which took 2 hours) again when the DM said I could play the Non-religious idea (5 minutes before session was to start, for reference), or play this NPC that the DM gave me no knowledge of how to play, or information he would know (since, you know, the NPC was DIRECTLY LINKED TO THE PLOT WE WERE PARTICIPATING IN AT THE MOMENT, SINCE WE WERE RECLAIMING SAID NPC’S HOME!).

When Nobody Is Talking: Pyro's action in that first dungeon was tactically sound, if not entirely ethical, so I wouldn't call that a problematic red flag. For that matter, executing a known belligerent who is only temporarily friendly, and could potentially be a liability in the future, is also tactically sound, though he could've discussed alternatives with the party first. Really, as far as I can tell the only thing Pyro did that could be considered problematic was attempting to use potentially lethal force to resolve an in-character dispute. This is not to say that OP's character's disapproval wasn't unwarranted -- in fact I agree it was entirely in-character of them to react in that manner -- but rather than resorting to force, it could have led to some excellent antagonistic RP between the two.

Not to mention, he didn’t kill in front of his party, so it was more acceptable. I think OP kind of overreacted here.

Antagonistic RP can work only so much before it breaks immersion by only staying with the party because they're player characters in an RPG.

@@ArcCaravan As it happens, I agree. Assuming the two can't work out some kind of compromise, at some point things would come to a head in a moment of "He goes, or I go." At that point the decision of which to get rid of should be open to a party vote, and whichever player loses should have the opportunity to roll up a new character, while their ousted character remains available for a future campaign with a more accommodating group.

The biggest issue was Pyro was basically an evil character in a mostly good aligned party. Every issue they had could be classified as an evil act. Pouring oil on your enemies, setting them on fire, and then trapping them till they die? Attacking a fellow party member and trying to kill them over a petty dispute? Attempting to torture a cultist and later hunting them down after letting them go? All evil. Now, if this was discussed beforehand or meant as potential RP moments, that's fine, but it's clear that was not Pyro's intention. He just wanted to play an edgy murderhobo.

As a steel creature (steel golem, but with three 9th level delayed fireball, six 9th level fireballs and 18 fire bolts. Each spells doing the maximum damages possible.) come to see you, Mary. Menacingly approaching you as its imposant figure with two glowing red eyes under a hood stare at you. Before saying in a artificial voice, without emotions : The grand fire tyrant send me to neutralize you. Surrender or die. As it finish, behind its black cloak, a flail with five dragons head on it is show (the flail of Tiamat). Roll initiative… or Mary you rewrite your backstory. Because the fire tyrant would know you kill a dragon and are the chosen one. So the most powerful servant will of course come to stop you.

  • @clem-lv2rw

    @clem-lv2rw

    11 ай бұрын

So, my explanation will not me the most in depths but I'm pretty sure it's a good start, if anyone wants to supplement my answer, by all means. Anyway, the main difference is whether the NPC steals the players's spotlight or not. If a NPC exists and fills a role that the party doesn't have (say a healer in a party full of tanks and DPSs, a rogue for a party that can't lockpick/infiltrate to save its life, etc...) then it generally is fine. DMPCs are what people call instances of NPCs that don't stop there and take a far more prevalent spot, usually outshining the players' characters, be it by taking away their victories, being the most important person in the world, so on, so forth. DMPCs are _always_ bad, but some people see a simple NPC companion and reel back screeching "DMPC!" when it's not the case.

@@clem-lv2rwI've also seen the opposite. We had a player who was looking to get into DMing that asked the same question about DMPCs and our DM hops in to claim that we had a DMPC in our game who didn't do that stuff (#NotAllDMPCs). The character he referred to fit your definition of an NPC spot on. She showed up only to fill in blanks, didn't speak unless spoken to or absolutely necessary to keep the plot moving, and she left just before each combat to explore a different section of the "dungeon" from us. She left for good the exact second the quest was over but he was adamant this character was a DMPC 😂

A basic way to think of it is to break down the acronym. NPC stands for Non-Player Character, PC stands for Player-Character, and DM stands for Dungeon Master. So DMPC is a Dungeon Master('s) Player Character. There's a heavy fine line to walk when a DMPC is on the board, and it really depends on the table and the GM how well that character will go down. I've run a few in the past, and it went decently, but I rotated them regularly and had two hard rules; they don't direct the flow of anything, and they're never a part of the plot unless the players want to side-quest into their backstory material (which never happened). Done right, you essentially get a role filled in for the party that they needed. Done well, and I'd imagine it'd be like having a companion from the good Bioware games; they'll add to the experience, offer interesting commentary, create dynamic issues in the party, but they don't steal the show or make your party feel like chumps following the real star. Done badly, and you get them horror stories, where they'll take the narrative from the players, upstage the players in combat, be a character that abuses DM privilege's (a story a few episodes ago where the DMPC was a higher level than the party, for example), and either drain the players motivation, or create needless friction between the party and the GM. Honestly, IMO if you need spaces filled in for a party (no healing, no frontline, no casters) and don't want to adjust encounters for it, talk about it in a session one and try to stick with what your party is comfortable with. Also don't make YOUR character, make it the party's character (preferably not communist unless that's the game your running).

@0freeicecream956 ok, follow up question. I am about to DM my first campaign. I have an NPC who will be reoccurring at times but far from consistent. They may save the party once but only once, and for entirely selfish reasons. They will not be a party member, and will more be someone known in the world of the story, mostly by criminals (they are a bounty hunter). Does this sound acceptable and is there anything I should be careful of?

Well for starters I'd say the fact that they didn't know there would even be a drider to bang until he presented himself. Second, this is one of those "I roll to seduce the dragon" moments that takes away from the narrative weight of the conflict. Third, by doing this, you're creating literal child soldiers. These are not spiders, these are DRIDERS. As in, they have a human half. Fourth, as Crispy said, it'd be overpowered even if they did 1 dmg each because there's a swarm of them. I could go on but I feel like that's enough.

It wasn't known to the DM or table until the offspring were made, nobody was given the chance to voice discomfort with that idea, giving all of the brood attacks would cause combat to drag on too long, there seemed to be no plan for the character besides being a broodmother, and the father wasn't made to be seduced into siring that player character's offspring.
