Historians theorize King George possibly struggled with Bipolar Disorder and he was known as the Mad King bc they didn't understand the complexities of mental heath back then. This is an amazing series, it's more heartbreaking then typical Bridgerton themes but the characters are really fleshed out and the love story between George and Charlotte is phenomenal!

  • @UhOhHereWeGo

Yes it is theorized that he suffered from a severe form of bipolar. He exhibited fits of mania (drawing, digging in the garden, talking to walls and the stars) he was frequently be speaking at such a high rate of speed that it was unrecognizable as English and would result with him foaming at the mouth from the amount of air he would intake while ranting , he would also repeat himself frequently. There were rumors for years that it was a blood disease because he would often have blue urine but he apparently grew a sort of herb in the garden that was a blue flower that was used in tonics at the time that caused it. So on top of everything he was misdiagnosed constantly by many doctors. Sounds awful.

  • @ashante190

He definitely displays symptoms of Mania: decreased need for sleep, more talkative and disorganized thought patterns (flight of ideas), increase in goal directed activity illustrated through his fixation on gardening and the observatory. And of course it caused impairment in both social and occupational functioning. I haven’t done much research on King George but the one thing that has me questioning a Bipolar diagnosis is that we don’t see his Major Depressive episodes in the show (No depressed mood, diminished interest, decrease in appetite etc). If the real King George did experience this, I wish the show would’ve highlighted. Based on show depictions alone, I wonder if schizoaffective diagnosis is more appropriate. He has the delusions, disorganized speech, and disorganized behaviour but no major depressive episodes.

This is the episode that started to break me. Getting to see George’s perspective, filled in the blanks. This episode for me was about LOVE. The love George has for Charlotte, that he will do anything to get better. The love of a mother, protecting her child. The love of a wife, that desperately is trying to find answers. The love of a friend / Butler, that only wants the best for you. Love for country. That Doctor is sadistic. The methods he is using with George is to break him down to the point where he is just a shell. Then he can control him. The shaving, calling him boy, depriving him from seeing anyone, it’s all to control him, have power over him. He knows the things that will trigger George, he knew what he was doing by telling George of Charlotte’s pregnancy. This series is so well written and acted, rich and layered.

@@SupernaturalLove100I know this comment is old but that’s exactly why he used those methods it was never to help George it was about being able to have power over the most powerful person in the world the king, being able to control and manipulate him. He used stress knowing it would trigger George into an episode, then further stressed him physically and mentally to try and break him into submission, even a doctor wouldn’t call a literal king “boy” that’s some that could get him killed but George being mental ill wasn’t understanding that this wasn’t about helping him. I also want to point out that’s how they treated people with mental illness back then with no real knowledge it was easier to assume these people were “mad” and use these extreme treatments on them and it did more harm than anything.

It's the pressure of being a king with no leeway, so his brain stops and freaks out. I think it's a hyper form of untreated anxiety, that lead to mania or disorderd thought. But bc of the time it was not understood, just now in 2023 people are starting to take mental illness seriously and trying to understand.

From what I've read, it seems like a lot of historians and mental health experts have landed on bipolar disorder as a likely diagnosis for George. It was believed to be acute porphyria at one point, but as understanding of mental health increases that's been debunked. One of the symptoms of the suspected porphyria has even been linked to the medicine his doctors gave him. I'm interested in hearing the thoughts of those also dealing with bipolar disorder. I know depictions of mental illness in television are a mixed bag, but this one seems well researched and even. However, hard the "treatment" of it is to watch. As always I enjoyed the commentary.

I'm so glad you guys had a reasonable reaction to this episode 🙏❤️ So many people said "this episode broke me" and like, I'm confused about that. Yes, the doctor was a total quack, but what some folks don't seem to know is that, back then... EVERY doctor was a quack 🤷 They didn't know enough about science to really be able to do much more than try random things and hope they would work out. Also, George went out of his way to ask for the most experimental methods the doctor had. What did he expect that would entail? In a world where "regular" physicians were bleeding people with leeches and attributing their moods to the type of bile they had, obviously asking for more unorthodox methods would lead to some pretty horrific treatments and George had to know that, right? I feel like this entire episode was intended to excuse the way he treated Charlotte, but I don't know why we needed that, because we had already seen him apologize to her and they were fine, right? I mean, didn't we already develop empathy for his character based on what was shown to us in the first three episodes, so why did we need yet another whole episode devoted to that? I dunno, maybe it's just my autistic brain having a hard time with this for some reason, but I don't understand why people had such an emotional reaction to this. This was actually the first episode that I didn't have an emotional reaction to, but maybe I just went into it with higher expectations due to the way ppl hyped it up or something? 🤷 Also, it could be that I have a personal pet peeve about ppl lying and/or keeping secrets, so maybe I just read it as though they were working overtime to justify that and it rubbed me the wrong way? 🤷 Not sure, but either way, I enjoyed your reaction! 🙏❤️☺️

It’s cuz he wasn’t planning on doing this extreme “treatment”, but the George himself asked him to use treatments on him that he wasn’t sure works bc until them the doctor was only doing things that he thought for sure worked. So then can we truly be mad at the doctor for putting him through this when George asked him to do whatever he thought would help? 4:13 so some of it I put together from my own experience with the disease the other half I googled and found out about the disorder, but he suffers from Alzheimer’s dementia with manic episodes my grandfather suffers with Alzheimer’s and I recognized the behaviour from season 2 of Bridgeton and it can have early on set which is what George would be dealing with given his young age

Colic is described as "when babies cry alot" online but most doctors will actually tell you it's basically due to trapped wind/constipation. Which is why when a baby has colic, they tend to scrunch their legs up due to pain in their abdomen. Idk about anywhere else but here in the UK we often treat it with something called "Infacol" which basically helps relieve tension in the stomach and guts and relieves trapped wind. As babies get older, we move onto using things like gripe water instead, as its stronger. 👍

This theory has been displaced. Most now theorise that he may have had bipolar disorder with psychosis although we will likely never know for sure. Later in life, it seemed pretty clear that he suffered from cognitive problems, probably dementia

This video was hard to watch to be honest. Especially since I struggle with my mental health. You guys should definitely read more about King George. He most likely had porphyria. It's a blood disorder that affected his mental health. And several people in the royal family had it. Including his own granddaughter. Porphyria is something that can be managed with medication nowadays. But mental health care hasn't been great until the last 50 years or so. I find this show interesting but somewhat inaccurate since King George at this point in his life in real life was fine. He didn't start struggling with his mental health until he was much older. But that wouldn't have made for an interesting show.

As someone who personally works hard to manage my mental health and whose sibling has a bipolar and schizophrenia diagnosis, I appreciate that it’s hard to watch fictional depictions of mental illness. I personally like that this show did not try to ‘diagnose’ George, not even naming any illnesses known and recorded for the time. It is true he was otherwise well for many years, until his erratic episodes became more frequent and he spiraled into being fully incapacitated until his death. In 2015, 20,000 personal papers belonging to George III were released to the public at Windsor Castle. According to first hand accounts of his behavior, how his writing differed during his bouts of lucidity compared to his bouts of illness, historians now believe he suffered from bipolar disorder. This could have been in conjunction with porphyria and to a greater extent dementia in his later years. Sadly, we can only speculate after 200 years. I think we all agree the methods of “treatment” he endured, including straightjacketing, arsenic blistering, long periods of intentional isolation - amongst other practices - made his suffering and symptoms worse.

@@chechantal I had read that King George had direct descendants who were diagnosed with porphyria. But regardless of his actual diagnosis. I have struggled with my mental health almost my whole life. I was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder when I was 2, OCD when I was 10. PTSD when I was 27 and clinical depression when I was 30. That's on top of being on the autism spectrum and having ADHD. I haven't actually ever watched Bridgerton or this show outside of KZread reactions. I took an abnormal psych college course a few years. Which was a bit ironic since the community college was built where an old psychiatric hospital used to be. But I learned a lot about how psychiatry used to be. And it's has gotten better in the last 40 years. It's sad to think that people like me or your sibling at one point would have been subjected to horrible treatments that didn't help us. But made our condition worse. My adoptive sister has histrionic personality disorder and currently refuses to be treated. And my adoptive brother has Borderline personality disorder and was being treated. But has since stop taking his medication and going to therapy. I can sympathize Charlotte in this show for many reasons. It breaks my heart because her and George's relationship reminds so much of my last relationship with my ex.

@@ashleydowney1222 Yes, even his granddaughter Queen Victoria’s episodes of rage and mood swings were blamed on a probable diagnosis of porphyria. She suffered from deep, deep anguish after Prince Albert’s death, a depression remained with her until her death but she was an astute and capable monarch her entire reign. We know George III was not. His manic episodes were, sadly, sometimes violent and brought on behavior that could be attributed to hearing voices in his head. Queen Charlotte could not visit him without two guards at one point, and they lived a part at the end of their marriage. He was sadly too far gone to be informed of her death and outlived her for almost two years without knowing his beloved had died. The study of his recently accessible papers has filled in the ‘gaps’ that were not quite explained by the porphyria diagnosis alone. It is a tragic love story. His position did not shield him from experimental medical practices that should never have been inflicted on a living being - I feel fortunate to be alive now considering the damage caused by mental health treatment standards and practices in the recent past. And improvements are still always welcome. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and personal diagnoses. The sadness, anger and heartbreak I felt watching this show were also buoyed by the love, loyalty and hope depicted, as well. Things I often forget I’m allowed to receive or embody, yet I hope for my brother they will be abundant in his life. I wish you the best of peace and joy in yours too.

I’m not a dr but I am guessing George has PTSD + some kind of anxiety-induced psychosis. All of his ‘episodes’ happen after a shock (getting married, your wife is pregnant) or during a stressful event (the wedding) And I think everyone can see that what the dr is doing is NOT helping. Unfortunately it was only very very recently that we realised mental illness isn’t something that can be “fixed” with force, that’s what they were trying to do with lobotomies and electric shock ‘therapy’ Although I do hate this dr, I don’t think he is being malicious. That’s just what they thought would work 😢
