19:44 Al points out the selection committee wasn't even watching Maggie's floor routine. "Athlete A" gives that comment a whole new meaning. She was off the team before the trials even started in an effort to silence her voice and protect the image of USA Gymnastics. Such a shame.

That is true. The gymnastics Olympic trials is not the event that serves as the test of who makes it to the Olympics. They count other events and camps. The only person who is guaranteed a spot is the 1st place qualifier. They could literally take someone who didn't even compete at the trials. She wasn't going bc she was recovering from injury. She hadn't been completing a ton. When she did compete she wasn't better than Gabby.

I disagree. They’d seen her in training, and had seen where she’d been in the standings. Her knee really is what knocked her off of the team. She would’ve had to beat Laurie in the AA, or Skinner on floor or vault (probably both) to get on the team.

@@maia9056 Pretty sure that's due to her surgery. If you watch all her landings, she lands telegraphed with her right leg first taking more weight then her left which is the one she had surgery on. 1st pass, right leg first and quick step back to lunge. 2nd, 3rd and 4th passes, right leg lands first. • @aries4alexs

lmao everyone who's saying maggie or mykayla should've been on the team are clearly not building a well rounded team. The team gold is *absolutely* a higher priority than event medals. USA usually takes top 3 AA girls from trials (so simone, laurie, and aly are in). But literally all 3 of those girls' weakest event is bars and you have to send 4 people to bars in the qualification round (and 3 for team final), so you bet ur ass the last 2 people on the team needed bars to be their best event (especially because aly is *really* bad at bars so she's not even really an option). That immediately eliminates mykayla, ragan AND maggie because it's their *worst* event too. They were 12th, 10th, and 9th on bars. They chose a bars specialist: Maddie. She won bars at trials *and* was the current world champion. AND was top 10 in 2 other events. That means ashton is out because they'd never take 2 specialists for the same thing (and she can physically only do 2/4 events). The last girl chosen has no chance of actually competing for AA (there's a 2 per country rule for finals, and it's logistically impossible to have 4 girls do AA in the qualifying round), so they don't need another AA girl who has the same strengths as their top 3 AA girls. That means they're taking gabby because she's the next best AA who's consistently great at bars and is also only .150 behind maggie in AA (they end up only needing her for bars but she's *not* going as a bars *specialist* , she was top 6 in 3/4 events at trials, and she could have stepped in for someone else if they needed her). The alternates they chose were the rest of the girls who were top 3 in an event. Mykayla was #2 on vault, ragan was #2 on beam (and both scored high in AA so they're useful in multiple ways). Ashton was very clearly maddie's alternate, so she's only useful for 1 event, but she's SUPER useful for that one event (because if maddie got hurt, the team would be *screwed* on bars). Maggie is good at everything, but not excellent at any one thing. Adding her as a 6th AA option is basically pointless and she's not great enough at any event to be a specialist

@@jessicamac-zv6tb Thank you! I just feel like people complain about the team selection as if they don't understand how team sports work lol. And if you actually know the format/how they count scores at the olympics, the team selection is hardly controversial because it just makes sense. (Which is why the commentators can pretty easily correctly guess the team before trials are even over. They actually guessed the right team 2 weeks earlier during nationals)

  • @aries4alexs

    @aries4alexs

    5 жыл бұрын

@Davy Lau Oh I agree that they didn’t *need* gabby to win. They could’ve put almost anyone from trials in that 5th spot and still won, but they're still going to bring the strongest overall team. That’s how team sports work. If this were soccer, you wouldn’t say “why bother having a defense (gabby) when you have an amazing goalie (Maddie) and the best offense (simone, aly, laurie)” You can still win by adding more offense (mykayla) and just outscoring everyone, but it makes more sense to add defense. The USA is #1 on vault with or without skinner. Tbh probably even without simone. We’re way better than everyone else. But they’re not #1 on bars, so why would they add another vaulter? And the nationals comparison doesn’t really make sense because that was gabby’s worst UB score at a meet in like 2 years, which means on her worst day, she’s comparable to simone/laurie. She literally got a 15.65 on bars right before nationals (and in rio quals & team finals she got 15.7+). By that same logic, are Gabby & laurie are equal to mykayla on vault because they had comparable vault scores at the jesolo cup? (gabby’s was actually higher than mykayla’s but she didn’t do event finals). For team scores, you only do 1 vault anyway, and for single vault scores, aly’s amanar is so good that she’s technically better anyway (Aly was ranked #2 in the world and mykayla was #6). And if the US just wanted more medals, it makes wayy more sense to take ashton locklear, not mykayla. They're not going to prioritize event medals that aren't even gold. Ashton was the national champion and won every single meet she was in (until trials). She was #2 in the world but less than a tenth behind #1 Maddie. She *literally* could have won a gold medal. Mykayla was def not going for gold, she wasn’t the mckayla Maroney of 2016. Simone was #1 and it wasn’t even close. Mykayla was #2 but it was a tight race, her best 2-vault score *ever* wouldn’t even have medaled in 2015 worlds, and all of those girls were in rio so..yeah she could have medaled but she’s not even their best option if they want another medal. Did you see the rio vault qualification scores?? Even if she was 0.2 better than she’d ever been, she would’ve qualified to vault finals in 3rd. And Gabby (who did .1 better than ever) qualified to bars finals in 3rd. Mykayla is a *great* gymnast, but it just didn’t make as much sense to add her to *this particular* team. Once you have simone, aly and laurie, if you want the strongest team, add gabby and either maddie or ashton. If you want medals, take maddie and ashton because either could win gold. The new format means they can finally bring people just for individual medals, regardless of whether or not the team needs them. I’m interested to see how that pans out.

Why was there so much unnecessary criticism of Gabby and dramatizing her story? She was second in the world in 2015, qualified THIRD at the Olympics, and her bars improved so much! Whether you thought you she should’ve been on the team or not, she had a great comeback and proved her 2012 win wasn’t a fluke! She grew up 4 years since London and came back to people being super critical! Don’t blame her for losing a bit of “luster”

Gabby came back and won a silver medal at the world championships. She won the jesolo cup. She won the American Cup and beat Maggie Nichols Head to Head. She was going. Add that to the fact that she helps the US team on the event that they are weakest on, and it was a shoe-in.

After watching Athlete A, that hits different too. Because they'd (and I mean Penny and if Marta made the choice herself or because he forced her, we'll never know and can only speculate) already decided not to include her due to her complaint against Nassar the previous year. And while we don't know that - it's pretty clear that Maggie should have at the very least been an alternate.

Also hypothetically they already had beam gold(simone) and sliver(laurie) so it didnt make sense to bring ragan. Bars final was kocian and gabby. IMO the spot that was in the air was laurie bc maggie, myakala and ragan couldve replaced them. Also team usa can bring whoever they wanted and still won by like 10 pts so whatever tbh

Maybe you are right and Ragan wasn't capable of deal with the pressure (she was one of the worlds beam favourite around 2017, didn't handle it, fell and didn't qualified!) Gabby was a little bit off, but I guess her experience was enought to make the team I'm still sad for Ragan, did her best and ended as an alternate, she is probably going to be one again in tokyo if she doesn't fully recovers and gets better.... Blaming them for Larry would be like blaming an entire teaching staff for 1 predatory teacher. I think that people really don't understand all of the factors that go into team selection. They don't just look at the scores from trials, they also consider health and recent meets. I liked Gabby as a choice because she's consistent. Even if she doesn't pull the highest scores she can be counted on for a solid performance. It was also a benefit to have both Aly and Gabby because they were team USA veterans. Everyone's going to be nervous no matter how many times they have gone but I think that it must be calming for the other girls when those two can tell them what to expect. I think that they chose a good team. Simone was a shoe in even if she hadn't placed first. I think Laurie was too. I think that they chose the healthiest most consistent girls. Ones who perform well under pressure. Simone is a beast so she doesn't count, but for the others I think Gabby had the lead on that. I think she's at her best under pressure. All I know is that I can't wait for 2020. I see Simone going again for sure as long as she remains healthy. The other four could be anyone at this point. Alot can happen in the next 10 to 11 months.

@@rxndvids3009 she ended up being suspended for 8 years due to abuse and misconduct towards her gymnasts, Laurie and Riley McCusker both made statements against her in the hearing, here’s a copy of some of the allegations from them and other gymnasts she coached. “Haney pulled gymnasts by their hair, swore and screamed at them - often calling them "retarded" - and threatened to commit suicide if top gymnasts left her program.Haney pressured gymnasts to remove casts and train or compete while injured. Parents were not allowed in the gymnastic club during practices, and Haney warned gymnasts not to complain about her coaching methods to their parents. When gymnasts made mistakes in training, Haney kicked them out of the gym. Gymnasts hid their menstrual periods from Haney, who told them that menstruating was proof that they were too fat. Gymnasts reported suffering from anxiety, depression and eating disorders due to Haney's abuse.[ In one incident, Haney and her assistant coach Victoria Levine refused to spot a gymnast as she attempted a new skill on the uneven bars. The gymnast fell and struck her head against exposed concrete before landing in a foam pit. Haney and Levine laughed at the gymnast until they realized she was having seizures. The gymnast had two skull fractures.” Laurie has stated she still suffers from anxiety and sporadic eating issues because of the abuse from Haney :(

Leila Zharmenova so I’m not personally a gymnast I did gymnastics for a year as a child but stopped because I found the foundation building boring (it’s a shame but hey) but I’m a state dodgeball player and my coach is my boyfriend and he’s a real hard ass when coaching. I think it’s important to have a coach that pushes you... but is able to recognise when their “pupil” has achieved as high as they can at that time. THAT is very hard to find and takes years of work with the relationship between pupil and coach to be able to achieve. There is a line between being a hard ass that pushes and an abusive person... Haney was abusive but was lucky she had Laurie who was strong enough to achieve what she did with all the trauma she had to face and carry on her shoulders. What do you think from a gymnastics perspective?

Why? She finished 6th All Around and didn't finish top three on any of the four individual events. Every member of the Olympic team (including the alternates) finished top three in at least one event. Maggie is a brave young woman and I don't think it would have mattered if she'd been perfect here. As the commentator said, the selection committee wasn't watching her. However, I don't see where she fits into this team. Who should Maggie have replaced and why?

@@foff1260 Lol! Yes, sweetie pie, you're entitled to your opinion. What you aren't entitled to are your own facts. The committee selected Gabby for bars. If she hadn't gone, they would have replaced her with Ashton, not Maggie. Simone, Ally and Laurie were all arounders consistently scoring well on vault, beam and floor. All three of them usually scored below 15 on bars so that's where the committee turned to specialists. Madison and Ashton both scored in the mid to high 15s and were co-champions. Gabby could score 15+ and also provided experience. The only member of Team USA Maggie outscored on bars was Ally. And Gabby peaked in 2012? Maybe. However, she finished third in qualifying in Rio (behind Simone and Ally). If it weren't for the two per country rule, she would have been in the All Around.

Everyone who's mentioning how MyKayla was robbed, I'd like to put forth the fact that in comparison to Gabby, she would've been hammered on execution at Rio. Also, Gabby had way more experience competing on a world stage where pressure is high, and in most situations, (minus 2012 Bars and Beam EF) she was able to deliver. I also think her bars routine was exactly what team USA needed at the time. Yes, team USA could've sent whoever the hell they wanted on bars and still won by 7-10 points, but they were going for the optimal team to bring in the best performance possible. If you want to fight this comment, it's alright since everybody is entitled to their opinions here. Just stating how I feel on the situation. :) happy gymnastics watching y'all

We're not arguing that. It just didn't make sense for the sake of individual medals. For the team, Gabby gave them a few tenths on bars while Mckayla would've gave them a few tenths on vault. That doesn't really matter at the end of the day because they were light years ahead of Russia and China at this Olympics. Gabby at almost no shot at a bars medal while Mckayla was almost guaranteed a vault medal. Simone, Laurie, and Aly should've been used for the all-around so Gabby wasn't really needed there either.
