    The -.500 deduction for your coach making sure you don't injure yourself severely is SO stupid.

  • @leykimayri

    @leykimayri

    No it is not, unless you know nothing about gymnastics. If there is no penalty, then everyone will have their coach there and especially they are going to perform vaults that they haven't mastered yet, and they would just depend on the safety of the spotter that he may intervene if something goes wrong.

    Especially because there is no deduction to have them next to the set of bars. makes no sense

    No it isn't. If you think you're going to seriously injure yourself on a skill, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. If you want the coach there for mental support, then you can take the deduction, which is what Simone chose. Spotters are allowed for bars because fluke accidents are more common.

    It makes no sense. It should simply be like UB, if a vault is a certain difficulty level the coach should be allowed to stand in, with no deduction unless touching the gymnast. (And yes, Yurchenko double pike should more than qualify)

    I think what got to Suni is that she had to wait her turn to go on beam for a long time after doing vault that her body got cold. I wish her the best of luck on day 2. I know she'll do better. Suni you got this!!!❤

    Shout-out to Jordan Chiles for having the most awesome, upbeat personality! She really keeps the team morale high and keeps everybody smiling. That’s a skill that doesn’t get enough recognition! Also- imma need to see Jordan as an announcer 5-10 years from now, because I think she’d be super fun to watch as a TV personality.

    Unfortunately, her ballet and performance skills don't get better over the years. Her routines are just not pretty to look at. There is a lack of stretch and tension and graceful movements that gymnastics needs. Years ago she could score points by showing higher difficulties than other gymnasts, but they have caught up now and just show additional graceful movements. I'm afraid Jade won't make a world championship or Olympic comeback.

    @@hildehohne8628my issue with Jade is that I think she needs to get a new coach to test her skills and just to bring in a different mindset to her routines. Her dad has coached Jade her entire life and even followed her to coach to coach her there. It’s an odd relationship IMO. And I think maybe she’d do better without him. But again that’s just my opinion

    I'm just so happy for Simone, seeing her still dominate while being overall healthier and happier, it's amazing to see. So proud! I also love that at the end she was asked about her husband. Something about that feels much nicer than just asking her a bunch o fstressful questions about how big of a deal the records she might break are; just one, and then moved on to something that's more fun and made her happy to talk about.

    WOW Jades first fx landing was incredible! Simone also had a beautiful landing with her Chuso pass, and those VAULTS?!! How dare she stick that DPY!! And then her Cheng was soooooo powerful she went flying off the table. Shilese is brilliant and her bars were *chefs kiss*. Jocelyn has so much potential, I just need her to get the form down, more lines and extension and clean execution. Leeann is one of my faves! Her gymnastics is just stunning, I mean look at that beam routine! The grace, the flow, the lines, the form, that switch ring! JO And Jade can both do better. Suni worries me, but only because of her health issues. Skye Blakely is also fantastic, but she worries me with consistency. Zoe Miller bars is superb, but I'm not seeing another event where she can bring another high score for team. Tiana is definitely a star, but this may be too early for her yet. She might be the one to watch for after Paris. Oh and then Kaliya Lincoln continues to impress me as well! Lots of talent in the US!

    Yeah too bad Zoe crashed and burned on her best event that was rather shocking! Up to that point Tia was in 5th place but sadly she too had a really bad bars rotation! Jordan had consistency on her side both her and Leanne used their consistency to get them to 4th and 5th place overall for the first night! Kaliya had the best night of all the newbies even beating Jocelyn Roberson on both floor and vault and coming in 6th for the first night! Simone was excellent per usual but a little shaky on beam! Can't wait for the 2nd night that will tell us all we need to know so for it's shaping up to be thrilling!!

While I understand your audience wants to see focus on Simone, there are many athletes competing. Please do a better job of giving as many competitors as possible their moment in the spotlight. Every athlete has dedicated years of discipline and passion in preparation, as have their families. I believe they all deserve time and attention. Thank you.

    The way the media hyper-focused on Simone during the last Olympics contributed to the stress on her. It's too much for any one person. Now they're doing it again! I understand everyone is excited about Simone, but people have to stop making her into superwoman. She's a human being! Give her teammates some attention as well. Gymnastics isn't the Simone Show and making it into that harms Simone and the whole team.

He named all the skills as the gymnasts did them and actually explained WHY they were performed successfully or not. He provided a lot more than: "a little wobble there," etc. Edit: watching again, and Sam does a good job naming and explaining the skills. I know people got annoyed with Tim for his negativity, but he gave the audience a good idea of how the gymnasts would score, because the judges are not generous.

It speaks volumes as to the difference in culture between college training and elite training and just how important it is to find the fun in what you love again. Makes me tear up.

I respect Simone Biles not just as an elite Athlete but as a great Woman. She is married and still doing this? Some people would hang it up but Simone doesn't just compete, She is performing Gymnastics and that is something to watch regardless of if she win or not. Just to see an athlete push her sport to new heights when she could simply do the usual and win the medals is Inspiring. Go GOAT aka Simone Biles.

    I’m an outsider to gymnastics and trying to learn more about it, does anyone know why a double pike is considered the most difficult vault? It seems to be the go to for a last pass on floor and extremely common as a dismount on beam, is it because you don’t have all of the acrobatic skills directly before?

    Team after night 1: Simone (VT/UB/BB/FX) Shilese (VT/UB/FX) Skye (VT/UB/BB) Kaliya (FX) Leanne (BB) Tiana has a better beam than Leanne but Leanne is a better back up on bars. However this team is missing a second EF contender on VT and UB, so there’s definitely still room for Josc/Jade/Jordan or Suni/Zoe to make their mark with improved performances.

    Poor Jade I feel so bad for her. She's an incredible athlete, but she's kind of a little out of the shape here for elite. She's so used to doing college gymnastics. And this is a big adjustment for her. And like Sam said, she doesn't have the repetition which, by the way, that reminds me of Bella corolli period Bella said the way to perfection is constant practice and repetition and he was right. I can say that it's also been the case for me. With gymnastics, cheerleading, and martial arts, I had to do them billions and thousands of times in practice and in tournaments and competition. Once she messed up once, I feel like it was a downward spiral for her and she is so disappointed in herself. You can see it on her face like she just gave up while she was on beam. And that's so sad I want to see her. Come back and fight, maybe after this competition. She'll go home and regroup and come back and kick a**

    Joscelyn's difficulty is very high, but her form is riddled with errors. Every skill should be done with pointed toes, and most require very straight legs. Every wobble is a deduction (three very obvious wobbles basically amounts to a fall). The list goes on. The good news is that her form has improved (and will likely continue to improve) since she's been training at Simone's gym! She's definitely a contender for the next Olympics.

    A couple of things. Why is there a deduction for Simone's coach on the vault but not for a coach on bars or a coach AND extra mat on the floor? All of it is about safety so why the difference. It's not like Simone's coach is gonna help her complete the vault - he's literally just there for safety. Makes no sense. Also, why are there college/elite categories for women's gymnastics but the men's program just is it was it and you bounce back and forth seemlessly?

    There was a terrible accident during the '80s so ever since they allow a spotter on bars. On vault though the danger is higher and they want to DISCOURAGE gymnasts from trying vaults they haven't mastered yet which would put them in danger even with a spotter nearby. Same thing about mats, they aren't allowed in international competitions to discourage athletes to perform tumblings they haven't perfected yet. Men Artistic Gymnastic is basically a different discipline and there is nothing to compare there

  • @millyfr7783

    @millyfr7783

    I don’t have the answers to all your questions, but the reason she is allowed a mat on floor is because when a skill is above either d or e (I don’t remember which) the gymnast can have a mat simply because it protects their ankles when coming down form such a height

  • @karyon1007

    @karyon1007

    The FIG is a bit notorious for applying inconsistent logic with their rules. This one makes little sense to me, too. FWIW, you can't use extra landing mats on floor at international competitions. The coach is technically only there to remove the mat at US/NCAA meets. Men's and women's gymnastics is run by completely different sets of people and are really different sports, so the answer is very complicated. A big part of it is because the women's national team was run by controlling jackasses for decades. The men have to be 18 before competing senior elite, women 16 (I actually think most of the competitors at Nationals haven't graduated from high school yet). People used to think that women just couldn't/shouldn't keep competing in their 20s. Before NIL it was more profitable for the top women to turn pro rather than to compete in NCAA. This was less true for men because their sport is less popular in the US. Plus a bunch of other stuff.

    Q1 (and I preface this by saying this rule is a bad rule and safety measures that don’t interfere with the athlete’s performance should always be allowed), it’s as basic as the fact that it is allowable in the code of points to stand in for bars, but it isn’t on the other events. The other issue appears to be that in order for Laurent to spot from his dominant side, he is standing right in front of the judges, impeding their view. Q2, the difference here is that MAG NCAA competes with the elite code of points, I.e. the open ended scoring system that both MAG and WAG use in elite, whereas WAG NCAA uses a modified version of Level 10 scoring, which still uses the 10.0 system. This means that the MAG athletes are competing their elite routines year round, instead of the completely different focus of MAG NCAA, which (in theory) focuses more on perfect execution of a smaller selection of skills. Many of the elite WAG athletes who go into NCAA keep a ton of their elite level skills IN their routines, but they’re doing a lot less of them because the routine composition in that code doesn’t have a cumulative difficulty score in the same way elite does.
