    TO EVERYONE THAT IS WATCHING THIS VIDEO AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE TWITTER DRAMA: please do not hate on gabby. her win here was 100% deserved, as was her Olympic AA win as well. i understand that jordyn and aly were just teenagers then, but that still does not make their alleged comments okay/not bad. let's just all be peaceful, supportive, and uplifting gymnastics fans :)

    @TurboCMinusMinus I honestly have know idea but considering she was an alternate that’s probably a fair guess. From what I understand, she and her coaches were only ever aspiring to the alternate position anyways and were perfectly happy/ didn’t feel they got a raw deal.

    I think Elizabeth Price got a raw deal. She came in 4th for Pete's sake! It should have been her as the 4th spot and Maroney as an alternate. Now granted I was lucky enough to watch her career at Stanford and she was a wonderful collegiate gymnast but still...this was heart breaking for me when it happened then and it still does when I watch again.

    I feel like if you have a weird quirk in your body like Rebecca does - with the incredibly knocked knees, you need special coaching and PT to strengthen the right muscles to keep your legs safe and strong. I feel like it's almost impossible for someone with that issue to be able to have any type of long career as a gymnast, it's so taxing on your body.

    @@apollopraetorius216 Right but Gabby got seventh at Olympic trials in 2016 all around and was only used on uneven bars in rio and had lower scores then Kocian. Who was taken as a bar specialist. They could’ve taken Makayla Skinner, Reagan Smith, or Maggie Nichols as all around gymnast instead of Gabby Douglas. It could’ve been Simone, Aly, and Laurie in the qualifying trying to make the all around and then one of the girls I just mentioned above could’ve Done vault, beam, and floor in qualifying. There was absolutely no need for Gabby Douglas to be on the Olympic team other than to have two Olympians come back and they really didn’t need that either because they already had Aly who really earned her spot. Nastia had every right to be irritated about the fact that they chose Gabby over Maggie. I don’t think Gabby or Maggie should’ve been there I think it should’ve been Makayla Skinner because of her placement in the all around at trials but either way any of the three girls that placed higher than Gabby would’ve been better choices.

    Thank you so much for uploading this. Watching this almost 7 years later, I have a soft spot for this particular team. The first team to win gold since the 1996 Olympic team in Atlanta, they faced a lot of adversity. Many of these gymnasts were injured while competing at the Olympics, and ALL FIVE were molested by that evil man. I can't imagine the strength and bravery these women--honestly these GIRLS--possessed at this time. It was a privilege to witness their win in London but also to see these teenagers mature and grow into incredible women that are role models in the sport.

    All the girls were good. The press had already decided that Jordyn Weber was the clear AA champion. She had all those commercials...she was already making a lot of money. But we know how this turns out. I’m just happy it’s turned out well for Kyla Ross, Gabby Douglass, and Alexandria Raisman. I’m also happy that Jordyn Weber is doing so well as a coach. She is truly blessed. McKayla M. won at the Olympics and was so great. She was truly an asset to USA. E. price was great also at this event. She had a great gymnastic career at Stanford. Choices were made and the team was chosen. I like the way Maggie Nichols dealt with not making the next Olympic team. She is so great at Oklahoma. Maggie is such an asset. The moral of the story is ...you just have to roll with the punches. Deal with whatever life gives you and make the best of it. A door may close but a window will open. Blessings and good fortune to all.

    I believe that if Jordyn hadn't been dealing with an injury at the Olympics she probably would have competed better, but you can only perform through the pain so much before it hinders your performance somewhere. Plus we all know that in 2012 that Nassar was still the team doctor which means that he was treating her most likely daily. That's alot for the psyche to deal with, I'm amazed she was able to do as well as she did with all that going on. Plus the mental and physical abuse we can assume she received from Geddert (I don't know if Jordyn ever came out to say how he treated her.)

    I was upset elizabeth price didn't make the team, but now that I'm watching this years later, it makes sense. The formula for the U.S. team selection is usually: The top 3 all-around girls from trials +1 pretty good AA person who’s best event(s) are where the team needs more points +1 event specialist (usually for the event that the team is weakest) Price unfortunately wasn’t any of those. She's a good AA choice and great at vault, but they can only send 2 girls to AA finals and she was not even close to top 2 (not super close to 3rd place either). She didn't place top 3 in any event at trials except vault, but if they want a vault specialist, they're going to pick the world champion (mckayla). For the team event, 4 girls have to do each event and 3 of those scores count. The last girl they choose is someone who is pretty good at all the events (if needed) but is great at the event where the team is the weakest: bars (aly and mckayla both suck at bars, so they need a 3rd girl who's good at bars). Kyla WON bars (tied w/ gabby) AND got 3rd on beam AND she was only .1 points behind price overall. And even if price got .5 points higher on beam (I personally think she was underscored), she'd tie for 3rd on beam w/ Kyla, so it still makes sense to take Kyla. tbh it would make more sense to replace mckayla (not kyla) with price because price is a great vaulter. They'd still want kyla for bars, even if she was just a specialist. But mckayla was literally the best vaulter in the world so…they weren’t going to leave her.

    @Serenas Temper oh right, I'm thinking of team qualifications (which is 4-4-3), but you're right, finals is 4-3-3. And I do get where you're coming from for "fairness" but I feel like most elite girls work equally hard, so strategically I think it makes more sense to "round out" the team. I agree that you don't always need a specialist, but sometimes I think you really do. Especially if the top 5 are all good at the same things (which was the issue in 2016), because you can only send 3 per event so you can't even use the 4th and 5th people for their strengths (because they're 4th and 5th, so why wouldn't you use the top 3). At 2016 trials, Ragan was 5th overall and got 2nd on beam but if she made the team I don't even know what she'd compete because even though she did well at trials, simone, aly, and laurie are arguably better beam workers (simone just fucked up at trials). And if you're not sending ragan for beam, why send her at all? Her only other good event is floor but all 4 other girls were better than her. They highkey needed a bars specialist in 2016, if they had taken top 5 AA (simone, laurie, aly, mykayla, ragan), they just don't have 3 good bar workers. It would've been simone, laurie, and then...I guess ragan?? who was bad at bars (10th at trials), but is technically better than aly and mykayla because they're horrible. Without a specialist, they would've at least needed someone like gabby (which gives the the same dilemma of taking someone who isn't top 5 in AA). In 2012 they def could've left maroney, she wasn't THAT important to the team score and they could've used price for vault instead, but price would probably just do vault, which would kinda make her a specialist anyway. It'll be interesting with the new 2020 rules, because you could just send someone like maroney as an individual athlete and she could just do vault.

    Price was the perfect alternate for all the reasons you stated. If McKayla went down before London (and she almost did), Price would have been her replacement. I think she would have replaced Raisman/Wieber as well. If Ross went down, Li (if she hadn't injured herself) would have been her replacement. I think Finnegan would have replaced if two people went down. Before also forget that the U.S. seriously needed an uneven bars worker as that was their weakness. Russia had an advantage there and there was still trauma from 2008 where the Chinese practically won on paper due to their D-score advantage thanks to bars. This wasn't 2016 and the U.S. gold wasn't a foregone conclusion.

  • @jodavitow

    @jodavitow

    5 жыл бұрын

    I think Price would´ve been the better choice for alternate indeed but there's another reason why they took Mckyla instead of her and that's the fact that she was a certain medal for USA on vault. IMO that's the same reason they took Gabby in 2016, she was on medal contention for bars (not that she was a bad all-arounder in 2016 but Simone, Laurie, and Aly were better. I do think they could've gone 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the AA easy if it was possible for all of them to compete. I think even Maddison could've made top 10 AA. That team was insane).

    yes, the choices were penciled in but this competition was important to solidify those decisions. The one thing that they did was look at the athletes' whole body of work - competitions, practices, participation, etc. Much better than depending on the outcome of one competition and also helped ensure more consistent performance rather than just having a 'good night'

Interestingly, his training schedule actually involves significantly less training time than many other coaches. Average at this level is 40-45 hours per week, Chow's students train more like 25. almost every single balance beam routine alicia did after the Olympics, they brought up her fall, whether it was mentioning it or showing a clip of it, they always said something about the fall and that was always so ridiculous and unnecessary to me. like yeah we get it, she fell during the team final. millions watched it when it happened, we didn’t need the constant reminders every competition during her comeback and im sure alicia didn’t either.

    Everybody likes to say that her fall on the BB is what cost them the gold, but in reality the start value wasn't high enough to begin with. Even a perfect routine wouldn't have been enough to win. So the fall was completely irrelevant, no matter how much they keep harping on it.

    The gymnastics trials process is not the same as track and field or swimming. They don't just take the top five gymnasts. They used to do it that way in the past and they kept losing. The Karoli's changed it. Every gymnast signs a contract with USA Gymnastics about the selection committee process. They all know well in advance that the only guaranteed a spot is winning trials. The selection committee looks at all of the performances throughout the year and evaluates the gymnasts based on those as well. They know that winning a gold medal is about creating a team that's going to maximize the scores on each apparatus. When you only have 5 gymnasts, you have to be strategic. Especially when you compare the U.S. to other nations. If you follow gymnastics closely, then you know how the U.S. team will be crafted, so it is very easy to know who is most likely to be selected for the team. They talk about who is going for months in advance. There are no surprises really.

    @@saragrant9749 this is an unpopular opinion, but i actually like this year's rules. I think it would work well once everyone got adjusted and used to the new system. The US can send 6 girls to Tokyo to compete... more than the past couple cycles. but, with a 4-person team final, it stays interesting, allowing smaller countries to compete. it also gets rid of the issue in countries like the us, where one of the best in the world on an event might not even get to go. through qualifying individually, gymnasts like jade can secure a spot, and the event finals stay interesting. i like the 7, 6, 5 as well but honestly the US would just dominate every time.
