For those that don't know what a 240hp Carpenter Rocket is: Big Custom Cams Ported/Polished Head Higher Comp Pistons (raised from 8.7 to 10.5 or more) Stronger Valve Springs Shim Under bucket conversion to safely rev to 9k instead of 6700ish Stronger Clutch Springs Custom Tune Using Hacked ECU + Power Commander 5 Bigger Fuel Pump Big Diameter Headers that F L O W like mad There is also a 270hp kit: Adds a few small bits to the above and costs a bit more, but its a legit 270whp.

The Rocket III is 250 lbs heavier than the Busa. If you look at power to weight ratios, including rider weight, even a first gen Busa has a better power to weight ratio. The Busa would be like a Rocket III making 273 hp.

Owned a Rocket for about 11 yrs. Fun bike but it kept your attention. Just a stage 1 but always had the carpenter upgrade in mind and was close to doing it but my riding days were coming to an end. After almost 50 years of riding bikes it was a pretty good finaly I think. Fun to see videos like this. Stock they are ridiculously detuned but still respectable...still can spook you if your not paying attention. Carpenter makes them what they're capable of and you better know how to hang on.

I dont think people relise Triumphs back in the day 60's 70s were the most powerful bikes in the world as they certianly know how to build powerful bikes! any how I luv my Busa, but admire British perfromance, history and brand great vid guys!

I still have my 06 Triumph Rocket 3 . I'm just running a k&N filter, a mapped D&D exhaust, and a 225/55/16 B F Goodrich car tire. This bike never gets boring. Even with my 300 lb butt on it. I'm now 62 years old and bold. But not crazy. That Carpenter bike is friggin insane. LOL.

  • @kevintaylor31

I've owned a tuned Busa (178BHP at the rear wheel) Large airbox mods, K & N air filter, pair valve removed, Titanium competition pipe and lots of mods to make it lighter. I also own a Rocket 3 with a High flow air filter and straight through pipes. The Busa is quick but the Rocket will tear your fucking arms off. HOWEVER the Busa goes round corners and stops! Having said that the Rocket gives me far more smiles per mile and it turns more heads. The Busa is common as muck but the Rocket is not just holding it's value it's appreciating with every trike that's made out of these bikes. You can get a Busa for a £1000 now but you won't find a decent Rocket for less than £7500. Different strokes for different folks but the Rocket is a far more likeable animal.

This video isn't meant to diss Hayabusa or piss fanboys off. The Hayabusa is THE benchmark for very fast bikes, that is the reason for comparison. The Rocket in this video has had its engine enhanced to be of a similar spec to the stock Busa engine, i.e. high compression pistons, aggressive cams, higher rev limit, etc. This video shows the difference between similar spec 1.3ltr engine bike and a 2.3ltr engine bike.

I love the Busa, it is a beautifully powerful bike.. But I am a Rocket Roadster rider. This Rocket has been modified with an aftermarket kit from Carpenter Racing. With that on the bike, it opens that massive engine up, allows it to breathe so the rider can take full advantage of it. With that it will blow away just about anything on the street, except maybe a ninja zx 14R, but it would be close. Stock Rockets are no where near that fast or powerful. Why triumph doesn't make a sport bike with that 2300CC engine or at least make a Rocket 3 Roadster RR version with an opened up engine is beyond me and they would sell like crazy....

Top two cruisers in my book would be the rocket and the vmax. As for the busa, it is probably the most pleasant speed monster to ride: feels elegant and unjerky even with all that power and torque. nie rozumiesz, test miał na celu pokazać różnice/ wyższość większego silnika. konstruktorzy triumpha jak go zrobili (wcale nie chcieli wyciskać siódmych potów z silnika) ktoś pojechał nim ponad 270 ale takie prawdziwe, hajka pokazywała by z 290 na budziku(japońce bardzo oszukują na licznikach) no i stwierdzili że to i tak za szybko dla takiego motocykla wiec jeszcze go zdusili na mocy i przełożeniu, hayabusa zaś jest wyciśnięta do granic bezpieczeństwa żeby sie silnik nie rozleciał, więc ten triumph tylko dobił do haji. Jak byś chciał wyścig z turbo to jemu też by trzeba założyć i wynik dalej buł by podobny

I had a 650 lbs cruiser, not too fast but it got up to 150 very quickly, I didn't like the turn angle, I kept dragging foot boards, I traded for a naked bike, 400 lbs, much more power, easier to handle, much more fun to ride. And before someone comments, yes I can easily handle any bike, at 6'5" 210 lbs, reasonably fit the only bikes that I would find very heavy are the new Yamaha tourer and some of the old Hondas, Hayley's are just not that great on reliability and if you are going to pay that much might as well get something that works. So I don't care what anyone rides as long as they ride. Instead of acting like high schoolers and diss each other's bikes enjoy the fact that bikes are becoming more popular and hopefully that will make for better laws for riders and cheaper gear.

Russell Cupples i own a hayabusa and they were definitely making the rocket out to be better then it is. . First gear goes to 90 so to be in second @50 is bogging the engine hard.. and third gear goes to 150 so to roll at 80 in third is again choking the busa up bad. I'd be in second gear if planning a roll race at 80, first for anything less.. This rocket 3 is a beast no matter.. especially with the added theatrics.

I think this all needs to be put into perspective.... I didn't mean to diss anyone, including alexis gomez.... I was just trying to point out that with the rocket and all that weight, when the engine is opened up, it is the most powerful thing on the road. Remember the bike weighs over 900 pounds... If that doesn't say anything, I don't know what will. I love the busa ( even though I am a ZX-14R kind of guy) but now that I am older, riding a cruiser, there are very few bikes that can even compare to the power this bike puts out. In this video example, the race is from a rolling start at 50mph. That removes weight from the equation and the outcome is based on what power is left in the bike. After initial take off the busa loses its weight advantage in this type of race and easily loses to the rocket. Stock the rocket has all kinds of limiting shit with emissions controls and what not that suffocates the engine. Once you let it breathe you have all kinds of power just waiting for you. Hell, I replace my tires every 6000 miles just commuting on the damn thing. What's important is that you love the bike you have and that your comfortable on it ( damn I am so freaking PC now ). Got to admit, I rode a turbo charged ninja 14R the other day that damn straight scared the shit out of me. doing 200mph before I knew what the hell was going on. So smooth though. Ran out of expressway and had to pull back at about 245mph when I was hitting some light traffic. I love to ride, always have. Hey, don't get pissed off man... Too many people hate us bike riders anyway than for us to be turning on one another... Got to admit, if Triumph made a tricked out rocket R type bike, it would be unstoppable on a light frame and more aerodynamic.... It would be unbeatable then...

Gen1 Busa- 1300cc engine max torque 101@ 7800 rpm Max hp @ 9800 rpm redline 11500 R3R- 2300cc engine Max torque 140@ 2700 rpm Max hp @ 5300 redline 6500 So looking at specs of the engines in these two bikes tells the story, doing same gear roll on between these two bikes means nothing, this is what I would expect to happen, bike with HUGE cc and massive torque low in the rpm range against a 1300 cc inline 4 engine, almost half the cc that's geared for 200 mph mind you and makes it's power in the upper part of the rev range. Look at the rpm of the Busa in 50 mph roll on, at the hit of the throttle (6k rpm) and how slow its pulling rpm, wrong gear the Busa should be in 1st gear to be fair as the Busa will do 80 mph in 1st gear, same problem with the 3rd gear roll on at 80 mph the Busa should be in 2nd gear and again it's too low in the rev range and isn't pulling rpm fast enough to build power. The busa rider isn't sand bagging but he's in the wrong gear to make this a fair acceleration test putting the busa at a disadvantage, these bikes have two hugely different engine characteristics and the advantage of doing a SAME GEAR ROLL ON at 50 mph obviously goes to the R3R. Do the exact same test from the SAME SPEEDS only this time click the Busa down a gear 1st for the 50 mph and 2nd for the 80 mph and the R3R can pick whatever gear it wants to start in and see what happens. I guarantee the test will go a little different, POST IT UP WHEN YOU DO IT.

Rocket3Guy Same gear roll ons mean nothing, your just putting the busa at a disadvantage in those scenarios. You wouldn't be on the side of me on my 09 as I wouldn't be stupid enough to be in the same gear as a bike with shorter gearing and massive torque....lol. I ran 9.50's on my stock wheel based, lowered, stock motored and piped gen 1 and in the same state on my gen 2 I ran 9.28's at the drag strip. If your moded rocket can out accelerate a hayabusa like this roll on video indicates then go to the dragstrip and post your time slip, by the looks of this video you should be in the sub 8 second range. The dragstrip is dominated by busa's and the gsxr 1000's for a reason not the rocket 3. Your bike has impressive acceleration for sure but it's not a Busa, to be fair with the torque your bike makes you should be doing 2nd gear roll ons against a turbo Busa... lol

Assume a 175 lb rider. Power to weight ratio for the first gen Busa is (175 hp / (550 + 175)) ~= 0.28. Power to weight ratio for the Carpenter Rocket III is (240 hp / (800+175)) ~ 0.246, less than the Busa. Putting this into perspective, It would be like an 800 lb first gen Busa making 273 hp. So it would be close, but the Busa would out pull the Carpenter Rocket III if starting in fair gears, using gears that redline at nearly the same speed for both bikes. Stock Rocket III gearing would be too low for the Carpenter with 240 hp, 2nd redlines at around 70 to 75 mph, while 1st gear in the Busa redlines at 80 mph. So for a 50 mph pull, and assuming stock gearing for the Carpenter, it should be Busa in 1st, Carpenter in 2nd, and at 50 mph in 1st gear, the Busa would be near peak torque.

It was in primer grey and had no markings or clues to its maker. As I was parking my Honda a guy came out in leathers, took a glance at me and headed to this odd bike. He seemed in a hurry and was soon indicating to rejoin the Fosse. Even more puzzled I decided to follow him, after all I had a 750 V4 engine in a brilliant bike and all he had was a big silly cruiser. I realised my error as he became a dot in the distance in no time at all. It was about 6 months later when I discovered what the bike was....and why I had zero chance of catching it.

Why no video of the Rocket III gauges? Despite the Busa in the video being strangely slow in the video, if this is the 260 rwhp version of the Carpenter Rocket III, it may have a 0 to 60 advantage if the weight is forward and low to prevent wheelies, which is the limiting factor for the Busa (it's best time listed at Wiki is 2.47 seconds, probably ideal conditions, 2.6 is more realistic, even with a good and light rider). Busa's better aerodynamics should make it faster for a 80 to 150 pull (assuming Busa starts in 2nd gear), but for 0 to 120 mph or so, the performance would be close.
