Hauling, Cutting & Splitting Firewood & Log Splitter MOD
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Felling dead spruce trees and hauling timber with homemade 4x4 timber trailer (with Forstman hydraulic crane), pulling the trailer with my homemade 4x4 UTV (utility vehicle) and splitting the firewood with my homemade log splitter. The felling was filmed in the beginning of November thus the absence of snow in the first part of the video. I'm also modifying the slide on the wood splitter by adding taller sidewalls so the already split firewood doesn't spill over the edges as much as it did before. It is working almost as well as I want but there are some upgrades that are definitely needed. But all of that next year. Stay tuned for future videos and thank you all for watching. Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

The weakest link in the chain of operations necessary to process firewood is when you are using the chainsaw because that is such a low-powered machine compared to the log processing trailer and your four-wheel drive vehicle. Anytime you are on that chainsaw you are wasting time so ideally you should invent a machine that can chop your logs to length much faster than a chainsaw. A portable lumber mill Maybe?
@brainsironically

If you're getting a new motor/pump for this machine, maybe you could use the existing motor/pump to operate a little conveyor belt up that ramp? :)
I cut wood for several years, and I must say that is some serious kit you have made. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished. Well done. Merry Christmas to you and your family. And merry Christmas to everyone else in YT land. Cheers !!
Great to see your machines performing in the real world.... And glad to see you don't obsessively clean surface rust off before welding... MIG welding through light rust is fine!
Hey Donn. What happened to your wood processing station that had a conveior belt system as well?

I saw in comments to a previous video that he had sold it, but this set up he has now is a lot better, those electric splitters arnt very powerful
You’ve certainly gotten quite skilled since the last video at operating the log boom and finding center of gravity on the logs. Love the videos! Please keep the coming!!!!
Considering how spindly the arm looks it lifted those logs no problem! Really impressed at this whole project!
My dad built a machine that both cuts and splits the log at the same time using a hydraulic knife coming down from above. Saves the chainsaw work.
I was thinking about how creative you are and thought a conveyer that moved up every time the ram moved would be a problem solver and no added motor just a drop and drag link between the ram and the belt mechanism.
Got used to silence with the timelapse, then jumped in my seat when your chainsaw suddenly piped up :-)
Awesome! Need a chain or something to move the processed wood up the slide. Moves about a foot every time you cycle the ram.

Great job Donn, it's looking good, needs an escalator instead of higher walls !! Good to see The Momma and Little Man out enjoying the winter weather. Stay safe and Merry Christmas you all and your families. Fred.
@briandolbec37

It is possible to power a small sort of escalator by the main hydraulic ram doing the splitting. A small spring loaded flap that pops up to grab the wood, folds flat when newly split wood passes over it, when the ram retracts pull the flap up via cable pushing the wood up, comes back down during the next split... Anyway, that is the basic idea...
Use a treadmill belt system ( convoyer belt system) . You will not be restricted by gravity jamming the chopped wood and also could go higher too.
Donn, your exit chute is too steep of an angle, it needs to be longer with a lower angle, that will lower the force required to push the wood into the tote frame. Best wishes for the Holidays and the New Year, from Northern Canada.
L expression " avoir de la suite dans les idées 💡", a été inventé pour toi ! Je suis admiratif.
I live in a big city but still want one of those 😅
I thought that you made a log processing machine that incorporated a chainsaw and log splitter, what’s happened to it , why aren’t you using it ?
It is so painful to see nice saw logs get cut up! Man I hate doing it every year I think this could have went for a better use 😒. Oh well the wife is warm and happy 😂👍🏼
A conveyor that advances with the motion of the ram. (That way you don't need an additional motor.)
@thecorbies
Жыл бұрын
EXACTLY what I came here to suggest.
If you put the last foot or so of the ramp on a sprung hinge, the weight of the wood would tip the end down and empty itself before the mass of wood started to impinge upon the lower end. Nicely Done, in the mean time.
Thanks a lot and my best wishes to you and your family. See you next 2023 for more fantastic projects
I really like the splitter! It's working really well now. I'm not sure it needs a conveyor, not for the 2 meters or so that the wood travels, but higher sidewalls seem likely. All in all, this is a really effective combination, with the UTV/trailer/loader and splitter all working decently well.
Small conveyor belt or chain belt for the chute Would be a good video
Everyone seems to be suggesting a conveyor belt. I would design something like the track system of a tank where there is a central sprocket system and then have the slats attached to a chain. You can then attach angle iron "catch" like every 16" to allow for cut pieces to collect then move up the conveyor.
Sellise haagisega ikka lust toimetada, ülejäänud puidu metsas soovitan hakkeks kokku korjata, saad kuludelt vähe tagasi. Edu ja jõudu ;)
narrow chute, tall sides. wont let the logs spread out so far will force them up towards crate easier as its pushing less weight 👍
Ya know, I wondered what you were using the winch for. Now it makes total sense.
add a lifepo4 battery to your atv and charge from alternator to use with electric pump (dont forget battery heater)
That was a beautiful, straight tree.. I think you should be milling lumber with such nice trees!!
Nice as always. Happy new year for you! Coming to Estonia next week, so nice to see your country again.
You need to build a conveyor to dump the wood in your crate 😉
Maybe you can put some wax or oil on the slide so that the wood moves upwards easier? It looks like there is a lot of friction going on
Thats a great way to get your logs out of the woods. That little trailer with the loader is awesome. I never knew anything like that was available!!
Awesome. Next on the list. Something to cut the logs into smaller pieces.
Think the sides are not the problem but the end, that should be widest and have an inclination Grat videos anyway
Really nice set up you built. I enjoyed watching. My only suggestion is we have a similar setup and the ramp/conveyor is sanded smooth. It’s still not as good as an actual conveyor. Thanks for the content.
very nice to see, nice to meet you
That little cylinder works quite well still, at least you have speed, no need for conveyor either

He needs a more narrow chute or a conveyor as you can see even with higher rails it just gets bogged down from firewood and he had to stop and clear it out.
Ezt a fát luxus eltüzelni.
Nice to see the fruits of your labor paying off. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family 👍.
That’s an impressive piece of kit. Very nice
Maybe some thin plastic on the slideway makes the firewood slide more easy?
Next project, woodchipper for branches.
Another great machine to add to your inventory! Good work Donn.
you could use the trailer to lift the wood for cutting into rings , save you back etc , you could raise the splitter and lower the shoot for ease of filling the IBC , but other than that nice work !
The same to you. happy christman and new year.
I can see a conveyor belt coming soon for that ramp.
merry christmas and a happy new year to every one ! thanks donny for the vids ! till next year, cheers ben.

Thanks for another year of great projects! Merry Christmas to you and your family and a happy new year. Greetings from Germany
Make a *small* "dirt berm" [approx 1ft], for the splitter to sit on, and lower the angle of the chute. Get your dirt for the berm from the location where the crates will sit. Should still be easy to back the splitter up onto the berm and to swap out full and empty crates. Just a thought. Btw, Merry CHRISTmas.

That's stuupid. He would need to lift every log extra 1ft. Storage crate lowered by 1ft is awesome idea tho, as it is lifted by equipment, that doesn't care or get back pain :>

@@poprawa // Clearly I'm not suggesting he make the berm the exact width of the splitter, and in the shape of a box. The total berm width should accommodate the splitter and Donn, and be sloped [regarding the side he stands on]. Remember, he made the hydraulic lift that he stands by adjustable so there's room +/- to accommodate this. FYI, "stupid" is spelled with only one U. Before you say: _"I meant to spell it that way, it should've been obvious"_ please understand, the total width/shape of the berm should've been obvious as well. [edit]: Merry Christmas as well.

He want to electify the splitter anyway, I would just use the conveyorbelt he build for the firewood processor, no need to bother with the slide.
Amazing skills. I wish I had the know-how to carry out a project like that.

Making light work of a heavy job! 👍 Merry Christmas to you and your family.
A minute and a half in, and already thumbs up and loving it! All that work coming together! Great Job, and Merry Christmas!
Recommended to be built as a conveyor belt would be more suitable.
Lots of good ideas to eliminate dropping chunks,I have another but somewhat different. How about putting the splitter on a 1' deck and lessening the angle of the chute? Keep splitter mobile and make the deck so the splitter can roll on and off. That way you can still use it anywhere but the main spot is less hassle and could be used with taller crates. Just some thoughts. Thumbs up as always.
You should try a conveyor system, like an old snowmobile track or something. Great videos!!!

Hi Donn, Great job, awesome splitter. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours. Looking forward to more great projects in 2023.
Awesome! You rock! I could only wish I was as talented as you!
that chain saw at around 2:25 made me jump lol.
First time viewer. Amazing DIY! Thought for sure you wasted a piece of metal on the side rails but voila, the cutoff matched the end piece perfectly. A small detail I would not have gotten right. Great content!
Consider spraying the chute with a silicone based lubricant spray. It will help to make the wood slide better. The surface rust on the steel also causes drag.
It's coming along wonderfully! Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Merry Christmas, thanks for some of the best YT content available!
Beautiful work with new details. Happy New Year and Merry Christmas)).
Well done Donn. It works so well you don’t get as much of the warmth out of the wood that splitting usually creates. 😉 Merry Christmas to you and your family.
2:26 Thanks for the jumpscare.
Needs a conveyor, something simple like a hay conveyor chain, your fighting the greatest force in the universe, gravity.
GREAT JOB. REAL EASY TO USE .
Beautiful work my son! 😄 Wish you and your family a great Christmas and a happy new year! 🎅🏼
Great add-on, Marry Christmas to you as well
Some slick plastic and it's fine!
Another sweet build! What happened to the timber trailer? I'm guessing you had propshaft bind but I don't know. That was a lot of work building the gear cases to not have it work, just curious. Merry Christmas and happy new year!

I questioned that very issue shortly before it left the shop. Something didn't look right to me, not like an articulated tractor or log skidder.
Time to build a sawmill some of those logs are to nice for firewood! Merry Christmas stay warm!
I think you should change the angle of the chute, it is too steep and the chute gets clogged. If the angle was more flat, you wouldn't have the problem of pieces of wood droping to the dirt.
A very Merry Christmas to you and your family. Be safe.
Merry Christmas to you and your family Donn :) Will be looking forward to see your next projects in the new year :)
Great job there ❤️
Merry Christmas to you and your family
Just impressive 😀
Suggestion. How about linking a chute pusher to the splitting ram? Get two actions out of one cylinder. Something with a slope so the wood can be pushed over it, and a vertical plate on the back side to push pieces of wood up the chute, making room for the newly cut wood
Love your videos. I have thought of combining your log trailer with grapple and wood splitter. More of a mobile wood processor.
Watch you all the time I don’t comment to much but as sharp as you are you need a conveyer of all the stuff you build your waisting time when you have to pick up and pull all the wood off your shoot !! Really enjoy your videos Thank you and Happy Holidays to you and your family
