Harvesting the Blood of America’s Poor: Big Pharma's Blood Plasma Business | Documentary

Why is blood worth more than oil? For impoverished Americans, blood donations have become a source of income - presenting a real risk to their health, as they lie about their health conditions and donate repeatedly to make ends meet.
Plasma, a component of blood that is highly sought-after, now costs more litre per litre than petrol. Used by pharmaceutical companies to create expensive medications, this precious liquid has become a lucrative commodity.
The film investigates one of the largest corporations in this flourishing market, with profits soaring over a billion euros. Their donation centres are mostly found in poor neighbourhoods in the U.S., and they pay donors for their blood, a practice forbidden in Europe.
Other donors give their blood in the hope of helping others- but the reality of where their donations actually go can be somewhat different. We investigate the global trade in blood and plasma donations.

I used to work for the Red Cross as a traveling phlebotomist. We often went to high school blood drives, and people as young as 16 years old donated blood. I guarantee you this ends up at Ambrosia, where they infuse old people with young people's blood to "reverse aging". I guarantee these pharmaceutical companies, these blood plasma centers, and these sick pukes that decided to use young people's blood to have a spa experience are making huge bank off of free donations. I would be very worried for my teenager that had potent blood. I bet you that some people that go missing went missing because of the power in their blood or happened to be an organ match. So sad. I woke up one day while at a blood drive and realized how many billions they were making off of free donations, and I gave my notice.

My father was killed at a routine blood transfusion. He walked in Duke Medical Center for 2 scheduled bags of blood to bring up his hemoglobin. I JUST saw him briefly the day before passed in the hall at Duke hospice. My beautiful younger, non smoking brother was dying of lung cancer and since it was during covid shutdowns, only 2 people could be in the room with my brother the entire 2 week period. The next day, as I held my dear brother's hand, I got a phone call. " your father just died" !!!! What, I just saw him walking strong and determined to see his son, but after his 1st bag of blood he got very sick. He was dead by that evening. Duke admitted the blood was tainted, after 2 weeks. They had their Risk Management team tell us. They blamed the blood bank. They knew I was modified and broken. Thanks to the laws and Duke's power, I was unable to get Justice for my father in any way. I can only get peace by believing he was there to greet my brother 2 days later.

I used to donate for plasma and my doctor told me it will affect my immune system and he told me older people should never donate. CSL Plasma NEVER told me anything about the dangers and one time, the guy poked through a vein, I kept telling them that it was hurting and it felt wrong. Blood started forming under my skin and it was huge. I then, started fainting and almost fell off the table. They never took blame for it nor did they ever reprimand the guy who basically stabbed my arm. You could tell he didn’t give a shit about anyone there donating. He had no business doing that kind of job. That bruise stayed on my arm for over 3 months and it was so sensitive to the touch. My immune system isn’t what it used to be. It has affected me to the point where I struggle with feeling tired all the time. I wish I had never donated. People who donate are nothing but cash cows. CSL Plasma are horrible and don’t care about those they are exploiting.

I donated plasma for over 30 years. Not straight up every week but on and off. Started as a freshman un college used to help feed ya a little. Plus on Tuesday you donate you could get a pack of smokes and co to a campus bar that have. $0.25 cent draft night. That was early 80s CSL only paid us $15. and it took for ever waiting on your blood cells to be returned. Used to laugh back then saying, " Tuesday lets go donate and go to the bar" get wasted and you could wake up Wednesday morning and have half a pack and still ha e $7 to $10 in your pocket.😅 Winner Winner in my 40s we did it for extra cash of course they paid a lot more than in the 80s I'd get $85 to a $100 a week then being over 270 pounds then. But here I am now nearing 60 and have dealt with Jgrens disorder a immune deficiency disorder since 2013 and wonder if always giving my plasma back then caused this? SMH.

My mother's life was saved by a blood transfusion 47 years ago at a Kaiser hospital in California. I am very grateful for that one time use of blood.. Considering that the hospital released her with a ripped open stomach! They had to fix her up! Now that I have learned of this horrible use of poor people's blood who give and give blood to the point of their bodies becoming weak, there's something wrong with this whole set up! The recipient of this blood can pay thousands of dollars and the poor donor who desperately needs the money thinks that he or she is helping to save someones life, including their own for practically free?? Come on now! This is nothing but the rich getting richer from the poor. Same old story. We are talking BILLIONS of DOLLARS!! I really had my heart set on being an organ donor, not any more! Before you decide to do that, find out who is making the money from your donated organs.. No thanks, I'd rather be buried intact the way I was born.

I donated 104 times in 2016. Twice a week for a year. It's a pretty hardcore procedure. There were times when I passed out during donation. I was in active alcoholism at the time and was at rock bottom in many ways. They consider it a "donation" because if they were "buying" it from you it would be worth far more than that. They make you feel like you're doing the right thing, but they're totally cashing in on a valuable product while paying next to nothing when you take into consider how much they mark up your "product". Taking advantage of the poor is what this country is all about. And as it turns out, that's not uniquely American. It's worldwide. ✌️🤟🍀

I used to work for NABI. It was a plasma center. I donated once and it just felt weird. I never donated again!! I remained working there and the same people came back, week after week. They got paid per donation, depending on the antibodies in their blood, depended on how much they were given. It was a great job and great money. Every month some weird people would show up and visit with the manager, who was always kinda sketchy. I bet he was getting kick backs from these high profile people. Interesting stuff man!! Plasma is more than they say it is. I think it’s the essence of our creator and maybe assists in the uptake of adreena-krome? Who knows!? It’s awfully fishy that’s for sure!!

There are immunity proteins and stuff in plasma. Antibodies , histamines, etc. Not every rich person who goes to get a plasma infusion for "health" is benefitting from it. Sometimes it is dangerous and stuff can still go wrong even if the plasma is "disease free". It could still cause allergies.

@@alicelong3613 You all keep dispensing your false church teachings. Where in Almighty God’s written Word it told you fear is a sin?🤦🏿‍♀️We are sinners. We were born sinners. Fear is part of our Imperfection. God knows this and he does not judge us based on our human frailties. But FAITH in him and his Son we must develop. You put trust and faith in Jesus and Jesus’s Father, whose name by the way is JEHOVAH (English) YAHWEH (Hebrews). Jesus told us to pray to and worship his Father just like he told Satan the Devil to do at 💎Luke 4:8; 💎Matthew 4:10. If this applies to Satan the Devil, as per Jesus Christ, why do you church goers insist on worshiping how you all see fit, praying to and worshiping Jesus Christ believing he is our Heavenly Father, Almighty God?🤷🏿‍♀️. Why are you all not listening to Jesus and following his command church goers? This is why 💎Matthew 7:13, 14, 21 and 💎Luke 13:24 says what it says. False church teachings by means of that Doctrine of the Devil, AKA the TRINITY is puttkng you all on the wrong path heading to destruction because you all cannot distinguish Almighty God from his Son our Mighty God and insist on worshiping and praying to Jesus instead of his Father. Hence the reason 💎 John 17:3 (Read the entire chapter of Jesus praying to his Father in heaven in behalf of his disciples (Jesus from the very first verse of 💎John 17 to the last WAS NOT praying to himself...(Jesus is not crazy) as he was soon to leave earth to return and to sit on the right hand of his FATHER Almighty God 💎Ephesians 1:20; 💎Acts 2:33; 💎Hebrews 1:3; 💎Hebrews 8:1; 💎Hebrews 10:12; 💎Hebrews 12:2; 💎Romans 8:34. 💎Romans 10:9 AND 💎 John 17:3. That is what the Scriptures tell us to do...come to know the one true God and the one whom he sent, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Jesus HAS A FATHER WHO IS OUR ONE TRUE GOD. JESUS IS SECOND IN COMMAND TO HIS FATHER BECAUSE JESUS SAID HIS FATHER IS GREATER THAN HIMSELF 💎John 14:28. You church goers need to start reasoning these Scriptures and stop having these preachers and pastors lead you all astray behind false church teachings. Who did God send? Who did Almight God...gave to the earth? His only begotten Son Jesus Christ says 💎John 3:16.. the Son of God 💎Hebrews 4:14. THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE 💎John 8:32 AND SAVE YOUR LIFE. It's somewhat complicated.. but if he donates at a community blood bank, like Red Cross, those donations go directly to patients. Plasma centers.. those donations go for research not transfusion. It is illegal to pay for a blood donation that gets directly transfused to a person. Plasma centers are allowed to pay 💵 for donations cuz they aren't being directly transfused. People often conflate the two, but there is a huge difference 💯 the most blood centers can give donors is a free T-shirt and a raffle for a gift card..they can't compensate them directly as to not sway their honest answers for a monetary reward. Hope that clears it up 😊

They had big blood drives at a corporation I worked at, and we were all pressured to sign up. If you didn’t sign up you were seen as someone who wasn’t a team player. I was very relieved when I actually got rejected for two reasons 1. I had recently traveled to a tropical country with a high rate of blood born diseases. And 2. I have a history of anemia. Oh darn. I didn’t feel so bad about being rejected (and therefore a “bad person”) when they also rejected my coworker who was a sexually active gay man, which at that time was seen as “risky behavior.” Everyone was walking around the office with their bandaids on their inner elbow, acting like such martyrs. Oh well. Now I see that many of them were giving to a for profit center so rich old people could feel amazing for a minute. Suckers.

@@Mercifulkingdom wow that’s super deep. It’s called being a “team player,” and all organizations encourage it. They usually promote the biggest @ss kissers, not people who refuse to play by the rules. Those entrepreneurial types who don’t play by the rules and create their own businesses end up forcing those under them to play by THEIR rules. So stop with this whole BS about people supposedly respecting those who refuse to follow thing you’re apparently assuming.

@@guzinaljiljana6570 I have also experienced this exploitation and I don't believe that they are just throwing away all of those extra vials. Plasma is too valuable. Whenever I'm in the hospital they take minimum 8 to 10 vials a day for "testing" but I'm never able to find out exactly what they are all for, or why I need them. I ended up in the hospital at first because of a serious medical concern, and now have become a repeat patient because of medical malpractice making me more sick and needing surgeries and interventions. I have been trying to stay away from everything related to the medical industry for months and feel the healthiest I have in a long time, though I still have permanent complications and missing organs now.

In the 80's our Mom was a regular Red Cross blood doner on her job. After The first morning she donated she was asked to return that afternoon before going home. Then it was a regular thing whenever the blood drive came. I once teased her about " getting tired of seeing that red bag." She said , "and the lemonade bag too." That's when we realizing they were harvesting her plasma too. Her blood type was AB NEGATIVE.😑 P.S. We are African-American. Inder the old 'Jim Crow', law : "If You Have {1.} Drop of OUR BLOOD in you, You ARE ONE OF US.!!!!!. 🤫 WELCOME.!!!!.🤗

"Harvesting" implies deceit. They also do not do plasma donations at places of busniesses becuase it's a longer process and takes up more space. The busses that show up at jobs are strictly blood mobiles.

My 62 year old brother has learning disabilities and has been donating plasma to the red cross a couple times a month for nearly 20 years. He can not drive, and lives on SSI. He is a very giving person and it makes him feel good to help others and gives him something to do. He spend most of day the waiting for the bus, transferring to another bus, donating the plasma, then the long bus trip home. Plus he spends a lot on bus fare to give his plasma for free. I like to think that he has saved a lot of lives but they are probably taking advantage of him.

I'm not being judgy and I don't even know you well enough to presume but if he had family to spend time with and watch his back with those vultures he'd at least be safe. There are probably other things he could do to volunteer. NICU always needs people to hold sick babies. I watch over my parents without making them feel invalid for these very reasons. We have to take care of our own especially when they can't hold their own.

So, be kind to who can't "praised God I was rejected." Really...be mindful.
