After watching your video, I was no longer intimidated to finally, after two years, clean out my oil pump. I have to say, mine was a lot cleaner than yours was. No gunk in the casing (the part that came off) and very little brown on the main part. I think the reason mine is so clean is that I change my Dairyland oil after every use, drain my oil into an old Sam's club peanut container (tipping at an angle so that the water is in one spot, then filter the oil into my Brita using a tight roll of toilet paper with coffee filters wrapped around the outside and stuffed in the filter hole and making sure no water gets poured into the filter. I then pour the watery oil into an old waterbottle with a lid, put it into my freezer to freeze the water and pour off the rest of the oil in to my filter once the water is frozen This takes a few extra minutes out of my time but i guess it's been worth it to have such a clean and trouble free pump. I do want to add, when I cleaned out my pump, there was a little bit of yuck in the window so I used q-tips through the little holes and was able to get most of the gunk out. Looks so much better now.

Hi and thank you for your comment. After switching to the dairyland oil we haven't had any issues. We change and filter our oil after 50 pump hours. We also use a brita filter and you are correct it works great. I like the idea of freezing the water and separating the oil. I am going to try that. Thank you for the tip. I love hearing from fellow freeze driers and all the tips we get from you all. Thanks Bob

I have not taken my basic pump apart yet, but I've been using DL since the get go and it's filter through a 1uM filter and dewatering column almost constantly. I have a stainless steel wet tumbler that I wonder if it would damage the vane cart if I cleaned it with that. I guess the actual working surfaces of the VC shouldn't ever need cleaning since their constantly getting worn on.

Thanks for the commentary. There is not a lot of direction. I have an older version of the HR branded standard pump. I filter after every run. I initially had a real Harvey filter that used a car filter (and lost a quart of oil when you changed the filter). I like the HR version, but you need to dump out their filter filling and line the basket with a coffee filter and then pack it with cotton batten or balls (cotton likes to soak up water, plus if in tightly will filter)).. It does a good job and my oil looks pristine. Inside the pimo HR initially suggested carberator cleaner (gettingg hard to find). Later they suggested CLR, which does work better on the glass with a little probing. Of course, which either chemical let it sit and dry off for a couple of hours (IMHO). The water based stuff definitely takes longer.

I wish you would’ve shown me what you cleaned it with did you just use rags can you use soap on it not being a mechanic at all I have no clue. You did say acetone and I have some acetone, maybe I can use that. I’m a brand new freeze dryer owner, and I ran four cycles and the oil looked the color it does in the brochure for the change so I changed it. It will not filter through the new oil filter that harvest right sent with this freeze dryer. Now my window is getting dark and I don’t know where to put the next batch of oil if it won’t go through the oil filter that they’ve sent. Thank you for posting this I found it very helpful!

The dairyland oil is blue so its hard to tell how dirty it is when I change it but it looks cleaner. I have started changing the oil around 65 hours of run time now instead of load count.
