HR sent a paper with my (HR) pump that says do the maintenance at 30 batches. Mine had nothing like the mess you had inside the cover. It was just a bit dirty on the pump itself, but nothing whatsoever on the cover. It may matter that I use Dairyland oil, as suggested by many users. It is great, I believe it has detergents that help keep it clean.

I can tell you, using a petroleum based oil on a rubber seal with cause it to prematurely deteriorate. You should use a silicone based lube, as it doesn’t etch and break down rubber. After all the time spent with your unit, and your different pumps, it seems a lot of people are having problems with the oil less spiral pumps. Do you think the premier pump would be the best for overall reliability?

I have the green premium pump and have only used the stock oil and Black Gold oil. I just pulled my pump apart and followed your video as a guide. My pump was corroded just like this. The carb cleaner ate away the green paint on the plastic base. Aside from that, all seems well. Is it safe to just add oil after using carb cleaner?

Before my purchase I questioned on of the sales reps at harvest right. There answer was it's just a little quieter than the standard pump. What do you think? Is it worth the upgrade?

Question for “Retired Youngster” as I look at your pump it is covered with what I can only describe as the old style popcorn type foam ceiling material that has been spray painted black. I’d love to send you pics of mine to help me evaluate it. The outer surface of my pump almost looks as if this material that may be rust, was deliberately applied. It doesn’t look like rust, it looks painted on. I love your videos.

I highly recommend to anyone to get the oil less pump if you can. I hated dealing with the oil changes and filtering and the mess it made. I feel that the oil less pump is worth the money ($1200 + shipping). The only maintenance I have to do after 10 batches is run 1/4 cup of alcohol down through the hose with the pump running a couple of times to flush out any build up. It's so easy and only takes 5 min. give or take a few min. It's operating temperature is 130 F so be aware that it cranks out some heat but it's very quiet. It pulls a vacuum faster than the oil pumps. I have no regrets getting the oil less pump.

Bryan This is my comment on Harvest Right's new Vacuum Pump 7CFM. Model 2TW-3C To your point, even with their new Vacuum Pump Model 2TW-3C and the new 3/8 inch vacuum hose, we changed the oil after EVERY batch for a long-range test. After 30 batches I still had gunk in the pump case. While cleaning my Harvest Right Vacuum Pump today I noticed that the flexible aluminum shield, located in the top of the oil case shielding the air intake had holes in it and was deteriorated. The holes appeared to be the result of rust (although there is no evidence of rust in the case itself) or from acid. ( I have photos.) I contacted Harvest Right, as their main offices are just a few miles from my house, about replacement parts. They told me that HR is no longer servicing their vacuum pumps nor are they selling replacement parts for the pump. I asked for the name of the manufacturer and where I might buy repair parts. Their service techs told me that they are prohibited from referring customers to other companies. If any of your followers know where a person can buy parts, I would greatly appreciate their assistance. I went to Metal Mart and purchased a sheet of 1/32 inch aluminum sheeting. Using the old flash shield as a pattern I cut out a new shield. I wish that I could have used stainless steel, but I couldn't find that thin of metal sheet on the internet. I was told by HR Customer Service that I could also use a plastic sheet for the flashing. I might try that sometime, as plastic would be easier to cut and cheaper to buy. McClain Bybee (Orem, Utah)

mine is the green pump, used 4 mm hex screws ...and there's poor clearance on the lower two, ..were buggers to get loose. Now I will say, been using Dairyland oil and when I opened ours after 20 cycles, the inside was practically immaculate! Note, because our pump seems to have poor vacuum pull, we drain, filter, remove water after EVERY Batch.. Doesn't take that long, but it's a bit of a hassle. Saw another video where the gentleman modified the pump with two quick release valves and cycles his oil through a Cannister Filter And additional Pump back to the FD pump. He said it allowed him to get under 500 mTorr consistently under 5 mins (and he had a Large FD). ...unfortunately he has not shared plans, I think he's looking at a contract with Harvest Right on the modification --which does appear to make the pump run much more efficiently and effectively! link to that Water Separator / Pump set up: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJiquMiCcaqpXaQ.html

Just saying, my pump looks nothing like this one even on the inside. Being the tinkerer that I am, after 15 batches I pulled it apart. I also pulled apart the pump finding it a well made piece of American product. Like Walt Payne and Timanator , I found my pump a lot cleaner than the one on this video. What I found was a pump with a main pump and a smaller one. The oil inside did not appear to be dirty at all. I assume I have a new version which looks like a massive improvement of the old one. My pump was not rusted YET. The splash guard was also different. My oil pan only had 4 allen screws and a smaller seal. Same goes for the smaller secondary pump which had 3 allen screws about 1/2" long. The main pump had 4 6" screws with 2 line up pins to the smaller pump section. The oil seals connecting the 2 were about a 1/16# in diameter and functioned great. I have had no issues with my Harvest Right medium sided freeze dryer. I know I reassembled it correctly after I threw in some BBQ chicken left over from our 4 of July gathering. Last time I checked, it was down to 192 mTorr on the vacuum side at -16. This thing functions flawlessly at the moment. I would recommend this product. It has produced excellent freeze dried food like the pros do however it is an investment but worth the money considering how much retail freeze dry food costs. For reference, my pump says HRC-7-115 model.

If you unplug the pump from the back of the freeze dryer (while you door is closed) and plug it directly into a wall outlet (for just a few seconds), you can pull a short vacuum on the machine to make sure the door is sealed. Then plug the pump back into the freeze dryer and start the cycle. You may have to push on the door to make it seal. I had a problem with the door not always sealing, contacted HR and they sent out a new handle, that didn't fix anything, so now I just pull a vacuum first and haven't had a problem since. I also ran a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe from the handle to right past the back of the motor, put a Tee on it and ran it down into a tall plastic cup, I put the little filter thing on the top. Now if any oil comes out, I can pour it through a filter and use it instead of it being sprayed every where. | Filter goes here ----------| pipe from handle with Tee on the end | this piece runs down to about a 1/2" from the bottom of the cup.

Our JB pump with harvest right labels started to leak pretty bad. We were sure it was the main shaft seal. We decided it wasn’t worth the money fixing and invested in the new 7Cfm pump. I’ve ran around 12 cycles through it since I got it about two weeks ago. I’ve noticed it is performing better than the old pump. However one thing that has been bothering me is if I’m supposed to open this pump up and when to do a similar cleaning like we did with the old one. The new manual for the newer pump has no information or recommendations to do this kind of maintenance. I was wondering if you could shine some light on the situation if you’ve heard anything. Also the new pump has a gas ballast valve on the side which is also not mentioned in its manual. I’m not sure what to make of it. Thanks.

They didn't make it stainless steel because it would have added too much cost to the unit. They didn't make it aluminum because the rotating vanes inside would wear it out too quickly. But here's a tip, you should spray that rusty steel with phosphoric acid. The phosphoric acid will chemically react with the rust (iron oxide) to form a new substance called Iron phosphate. (the phosphoric acid will not harm the aluminum) Iron phosphate will actually help protect the steel from rusting any further. You can buy phosphoric acid in diluted form from most hardware stores (probably rebranded as concrete cleaner or water softener restorer), or you can get a more concentrated version called "Navel Jelly". Phosphoric acid is not toxic and is one of the main ingredients in Coca Cola.

@@live.life.simple. I haven't needed to try it (yet)... but I've been using phosphoric acid to fix rusty parts and stop further rust for 30 years. Its actually used to treat the bare metal parts on your car before they are painted or coated. In fact, automotive stores sell a product called "Rust Mort". You'll notice the liquid is green.. that's because phosphoric acid is green.. or you can check the MSDS Sheets and you'll see it usually says 25%-50% phosphoric acid. Its also a great trick to get rid of rust stains in your shower. Makes them disappear almost as fast as the liquid spray bottle gets them wet. Go purchase some Navel Jelly, brush it on, then rinse it off with water.. Then thoroughly dry. Use wire brush to remove the flaky rust first. Let it sit for an hour or so or give it a couple treatments. Do not let the acid dry, keep it wet. The rust will turn dark gray or black. Phosphoric acid is barely even an acid as its very mild, although it smells funky when using it. I like your Harvest Right videos. Keep it up!

That's great. I appreciate the excellent tip. I'll use it on my next maintenance and if it works well, suggest it to other Freeze dryers.
