Thank you. I am glad it was helpful, good luck. Thanks for watching.
The dairy land oil has a detergent in it which is probably helping to keep your machine cleaner inside

Yes it does. That is why we switched to it. It has been 2 1/2 years now and hundreds of loads with dairyland oil and it has worked great.

I have worked on vacuum pumps for over 35 years (longer than most of HR engineers have been alive) . I have worked on Rotary Piston Vacuum Pumps that were 600 cfm and larger. So I think I might have an idea of what I am doing. None the less I am just providing information. Take it or leave it. They manufacture the freeze dryers not the vacuum pumps. They have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to their vacuum pumps.

Thanks for this follow up video. My hubby did my second cleaning, been using Robinair oil, after I saw the screen was suddenly filthy and my oil changes were having loads of rust like particles in the oil. I did not view the cleaning of the pump, this time. But my first run was more of the same and viewing window was filthy. Anyway. I did a second cleaning and observed the pump had loads rust on the actual pump. I’ve cleaned and used the toothbrush scrub technique, as well. I’ve gotten it pretty clean and now I’m switching over to Dairyland. I’m certain I need that detergent in the oil. By the way, I change/filter oil after every load. I don’t mind the 5 minutes. Anyway, your follow up video validates my thoughts, as well. Thanks!

So far switching to the dairyland oil has worked great for us. Our pump is much cleaner. I think the rust comes from the moisture in the food sitting in the pump, so changing it every load is a good idea. Plus like you said it only takes a few minutes to change it. Good luck and thanks for watching.
It seems like a lot of work to keep them going . I never been around a freeze dryer before . I did my share of dehydrating though . Thanks for sharing !

They aren't to bad. We love our freeze dryer. We have freeze dried so much food. We have limited space in our deep freeze. So freeze drying saves us a ton of room. plus it preserves our food so much longer. Thanks for watching.
I noticed that after running a load of lemons that the site glass was clean on the pump and the garlic smell was gone in the vac chamber.

I have never noticed any change in the sight glass, but now that we use dairyland oil it stays clean. Great tip I will have to try it. Thanks for watching
If I had one of these I'd be tempted to work out a way to include a small electric pump and an oil filter.

Yes this is on my agenda. I have a few ideas on how to do it, just haven't taken the time to hook it all up and test it. Our freeze dryer is always running and with all our food (fruit,berries and vegetables) getting ripe we always have something to go in it. Maybe this winter i will get time to modify it. Thanks for sharing and watching.
Thank you so much for doing this video. I have the same pump and have been using Robinair oil. It looks like my pump needs to be cleaned so thanks to you I now know how to do it. I have a question - if you are looking at the pump from the site-glass side there is a round knob on the left side of the pump - what is this for? I have not been able to find any info on this.
@HippieHillHomestead

Thank you for your kind words. I am not sure what the knob is for.
Mine is do a cleaning and I feel better about taking it apart after watching your video’s. Question? What is the silver knob on the side of the pump used for?
@HippieHillHomestead

Hi Carl, they are easy to work on. Just be careful of the gasket when you put it back together.

What about using Dawn dishwashing detergent to clean it out and a brass brush? If it's gentle enough to wash baby birds after an oil spill in the ocean with Dawn and it gets the birds clean and doesn't kill them, then it seems to me that it would work on our pumps. The brass brush I'm referring to are soft and what jewelers use to brush their newly minted silver and gold jewelry pieces. What do you think of this suggestion? I'm a brand new HR FD owner so this is all new to me! Thank you.

I don't see why you couldn't use dawn or a brass brush. Just make sure you rinse it well and don't leave any brass from the brush in it. After switching oils we haven't had any problems.Thanks for watching.
Hi, could you explain or do video on the gas ballast. There is no info on what it's for, how it should work , open or closed. Thank you

It seems like you should be able to replace that filter looking thing in the top.

Yes you can replace it. You shouldn't have to for many years though.
My oil filler plug is cross threaded. Any idea on getting a replacement?
@HippieHillHomestead

You might be able to contact Robinair the manufacturer of the pump to get a replacement. Here is a link to their website. www.robinair.com/products/replacement-parts/11872
What about the gas ballast? Do you want that screwed in “off” or screwed all the way out “on”
@HippieHillHomestead
Жыл бұрын
You want your ballast open. During the compression process in the pump , vapor will condense. Failure to remove it will form a contaminant which will prevent the pump from achieving its optimum vacuum pressure. Thanks for watching.

Azad, Let me do a little research and I will find out for you. We have watermelon in our freeze dryer right now. So I can'y measure ours. As soon as this load is done I will see what size it is and let you know.

Would you let me know too? Mine was never right. I think it came cross threaded and never fit right so now I use a rubber plug. Harvest Right said they didn't have extras and would send me one when they got one. After checking several times for over a year, I gave up on it.
How do you determine the pump hours?
@HippieHillHomestead
2 жыл бұрын
I have a spreadsheet that I use to document every load. One of the columns is for pump hours. We also keep a printed out sheet we leave on top of our freeze dryer and when the pump starts up we write the hours down and when the load is done we write the hours down. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
