Petrified means "turned into stone", as in Pretrified wood, coming from the Latin, "petrae" = "rock", and it also means being extremely scared English is a hellava language 😅

I’m positive that Jason Isaacs got the role of Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter Series because of his role in The Patriot.

You ask how did he know what to do when e stabbed the diary. Being magical involves sometimes just simply knowing things without thinking. The book makes that quite clear a few times when it says things like "he thought, then the answer rose to his lips effortlessly". Or: "He knew what he had to do like he always meant to do it". The thing is that there's a lot more to magic than just powers, a wand and the right spell. The witches or wizard's character and intentions matter a lot. There are strict rules in magic. It's not like anything is possible, it's imagined almost like a science, like an alternative physics with its own laws, rules and consequences to everything. For example you can't make food out of nothing. Also - and this will be VERY important later - no spell can reawaken the dead. Death is always final and irreversible.

The reason why there is never any security is because JK wrote the books from the viewpoint of a child, living in a world where adults often make irrational choices and things are often unfair, and showing children that they have agency of choice and can survive by their own means.
