Nilsson will break your heart. I loved him and his magnificent voice. Such emotion.
The song was written and released by Badfinger
This guy was a songwriter for the Monkees, 3 Dog Night and many more but he is most famous for singing "Without You" & "Everybody's Talking"
I have LOVED this song since I was a teenager. In fact, I love the entire album Nilsson Schmilsson (1971) , it has many good songs on it. Although Harry was a brilliant songwriter and singer, he did not write this song, but covered the original from Badfinger. I agree with Dee, no disrespect to Heart (I've never heard their version), but I can't imagine anyone singing it better than Harry. Harry was another troubled genius who lived hard and died too young - bless him.

Chod, I watch about 7 diff reactors, some for their personalities but I watch you for many more reasons. Number 1 fact is you get it! You understand and appreciate the magnitude of 60s and 70s music in the lyrical, musical, diverse selection and harmonic sense . I've heard you say many times that today's music can't touch the music of the old days. I agree with you 100% ,not because I grew up to the late 60s and 70s, but because it's a fact. Not because it's based on just opinion. It's based on musical knowledge and ability, as well as an ear for the cream of the crop. Ex. Led Zep, Rush, Yes,Allman Bros, SRV,etc. I know you truly are moved, inspired and blown away by stuff 50 years old or more. Then add in Dee who brings a great chemistry and is the Robin to your Batman. I love you guys. I still laugh to myself about your Free reaction when Dee was overwhelmed with Paul Rodgers hip thrusts!! You guys were so funny in that reaction!! Anyone that doesn't value your channel are out of touch because you do know what you're talking about and you base your analysis on musical know how and knowledge, not biased opinion. You are for real my friend!!! Keep up the good work and please check out Be my Friend by Free. it's outstanding!!!
Your channel is brilliant and entertaining Chod. Thank you so much for the time & hard work you (and Dee!) put into it. Cheers from Canada.

One of the greatest 20th century American vocalists
Two smash hits. This one and Mariah Carey. Maybe the most tragic of all songs. The two writers both committed suicide and one of those suicides was in the midst of legal battles over the song writing royalties. This version has been beloved since 1971.

So many great songs by Harry . RIP 🌸
Harry owns this song. No one else comes close.
I love both Harry Nilsson and the original version by Badfinger written by Badfinger's Pete Ham and Tommy Evans ❤️
The song was first released written and performed by Badfinger. Peter Ham wrote the song for his wife. He and his band Badfinger were getting ready to leave for a tour and as he kissed his wife goodbye she said, it’s okay and Peter then told his wife “you always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows “.
Badfinger
John Lennon’s buddy, Extremely Talented and not here anymore.😢 Darn you Harry😥❤
Nilsson hit #1 with this one in 1972.
You were on the right track, I believe I heard you mention Badfinger, but yes Pete Ham and Tom Evans wrote this, and Badfinger recorded it in 1970 for their album "No Dice". Strange because artists were usually covering songs that Harry Nilsson had written. I don't know where Heart came into the discussion; maybe they covered it in their later years with which I'm unfamiliar. Somehow don't expect this voice to come from that guy in the photograph wearing the bread-liner cap with the cigarette dangling from his mouth, lol.

This was written and recorded by the band Badfinger originally.
Very talented man also wrote soundtrack to movie Popeye around 1980
It was written by members of Badfinger, and they recorded it first. After that, Nilsson had the big hit single with his cover. It was not a Carpenters song. Mariah Carey later recorded it.
Even the great Shirley Bassey will find it hard to beat Harry in this song. He owns it.
This is his song. Always has been, always will be.
Back in the early 80s I remember when Air Supply the Australian soft rock band done this song there's only been two that have done this song justice Harry and Air Supply the rest falls way short of what this song can convey .
I'm not sure who's the best music reactor on KZread, but on this particular video, Dee was the winner. Harry Nilsson didn't write this song, but he made it his own.
I love this classic song. Harry’s version is so emotional; he poured his heart into it❤. The best! RIP🌹
That girl is really feeling the music and that is awesome
Harry Nilsson wrote this song so when you hear him sing it you are hearing it the RIGHT way. I don't remember Karen Carpenter covering this and I heard every song they did when it came out. So this is not just a "version" of the song. It is the original.

Totally agree! I was in my 20's then, and I liked Nilsson's version best. Eric Carmen's All By Myself came out in 1975, was really good. The first of this kind, to me, was Todd Rundgren in 1972, Hello It's Me. I liked that one as well. All good. You guys should try the other two, as well.
This is my first time listening to one of you reactions, because I love to see people react to this song the first time they hear it. You wife is right on, this song won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal in 1973. This gut-wrenching ballad was originally released by Badfinger in 1970, Badfinger members Peter Ham and Tom Evans wrote it. Nilsson first came across this song at a Laurel Canyon party in 1971 and thought it was a Beatles song. Badfinger was signed to Apple Records, The Beatles' label, and their version of "Without You" was produced by Beatles associates Geoff Emerick and Mal Evans. Nilsson also had a Beatles connection: John Lennon helped launch his career when he referred to Harry as his "favorite American group." BTW Mariah Carey covered the song in 1994 and it became an international best-seller
Badfinger's original version came out in 1970 on The Magic Christian Soundtrack a movie with Peter Sellers & Ringo Starr
This is Harry’s song . Perfection Harry Nilsson

Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger wrote this song, Nilsson wrote "One" by Three Dog Night.
Lil Tod n lil Evie =TnE ...Ty guys for your service
Everyone’s Talking from the Midnight Cowboy score is one of my favorite songs of all time!!!
Even though 'Without You' is widely regarded as Harry Nilsson's signature song, he didn't actually write it himself. The songwriter credits belong to Badfinger band members Peter Ham and Tom Evans who originally released the song in 1970. It wasn't initially released as a single, so nobody was familiar with the song until Nilsson gave it a lush, orchestral makeover. It's almost harder to pinpoint someone that hasn't covered 'Without You', given that over 180 artists have recorded their own renditions since Nilsson's. The most notable covers of 'Without You' have come from Air Supply, Dame Shirley Bassey, Glen Campbell, T.G. Shepherd, and Mariah Carey.
Written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of Badfinger out of Britain in 1970. Done by 170 artists with Harry Nilson doing it in 1971. Yeah... I was around for this one as a 12 year old. This came out of the Abbey Road Studio in London. I don't recall the Heart version, but fell in love with the version by Air Supply kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZmqrshrkpW1fpM.html 😁
This is the best version, so much feeling in his voice, then Mariah Carey’s version an 3e Karin Carpenter. The first version was “Badfinger”.
No one does this song better than Harry Nilsson.
Great songs he reformed the song into a easy listening still good
Badfinger was the band who did this sone initially.
A deep cut by him that is a hauntingly beautiful tune, is "Lifeline" from the movie sound track of "The Point"!

This song was written and recorded by Pete Ham, and Tom Evens from the band Badfinger, but Harry had the big hit with it. The story goes that Badfinger were recording in one studio and Harry had just finished recording this song in the next studio and he went to across the hall and asked the writers of the song if they would like to listen to his recording. They listened, and couldn't believe what an amazing job Harry had done with their song. They loved it. Badfinger were an amazing band discovered, and signed by The Beatles. You should listen to some of their songs. Also, yes, Harry has passed. It mentions it towards the end of the video.
this wa first written and recorded by Pete Ham & Tom Evans of Badfinger ,has also been covered by Mariah Carey, and Heart as well
Nobody touches Harry Nilsson with this song, others might try but The Original Is Always The Best ❤❤
It was bad finger the group in 1970 that originated this song two years later and 72 that's when Harry Nilsson revised it and made it sound better this was the good old days of the early 70s this song is a classic for those that grew up in that time. Like myself
And she has a unique perspective.
Love Heart, but this is the definitive cover. Everyone owned the Nilsson Schmilsson album🔥🔥🔥 The original was written by songwriters/band Badfinger❤️

Next up from HN "Gotta Get Up" start your morning and it will get you moving.
Without you was Bad Finger originally, not Harry Nilsson, This is a cover. Without You (1970) Once described by Paul McCartney as “the killer song of all time”, Without You has been covered by close to 200 artists, most successfully by Harry Nilsson in 1971 and, 23 years later, Mariah Carey. The original, co-written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans, Bad Finger, is less saccharine and more understated, delivered with a genuine sense of anguish.
RIP Harry you gave us great tunes ❤
This song was written by the band 'Badfinger' , their version was first then Nilsson's version became a HUGE hit. I'm not aware of a version the the Carpenters
this song is all about sorrow, written by Badfinger Peter Ham and best friend, you should look at the story of Badfinger and see how sad the song is in relation to the song writers,, you will cry !
Even this version, is a cover. Originally done by a band called Badfinger
Nelson hit #1 with his original version of Without You in the early 70's. For a great cover by the Carpenters, I challenge you to review their version of Ticket To Ride by the Beatles!

This is the original and best version. It’s just that other versions have popular artists singing them and recorded years later when recording equipment had improved. His voice; cello, violins, etc, were incredible.

@@garycolon4213 Thanks for filling me in on this or maybe refreshing my memory because, now that you mention it, I may have heard the same thing years ago and totally forgot.
You have to do more from him, to truly understand. Harry is a musical God. He has so many styles, and can about do it all, and not just do it, but do it better than the original when its not his own. He has silly songs, fun songs, hard rock songs, love songs, songs like this one, songs that want to make you move and dance. More please.
Fred Neil was the name of the man who wrote and first recorded this song but Harry made it his own. Harry Nilsson was one of the greatest male vocalists that ever walked the earth. If this dude thinks that ANY other version of this song is better than Nilsson's, he clearly knows nothing about music, even though he desperately wants you to think he does.
This is the most famous version and was a huge hit. The original version was by Badfinger but, I don't think it was a single release...at least not in America. It may have been a single in the U.K.
Beautiful ❤
As a drummer, your next Nilsson port of call is "Jump Into the Fire." That one's an absolute banger. "Spaceman" is also excellent. (Also, make The Point a family movie night! Both the music and the message are top-tier.)
Listening to Badfinger's version, nobody would have guessed that this song would become one of the all-time great songs. Harry kills this song. Mariah Carey had a million seller too, basically copying Harry's version. I've never heard Heart's version. It did not chart.
Bad Finger's original version is good but Harry Nilsson's voice and range brought this song to another level and turned into a classic. Marriah's is great also but a man's voice reaching that high, WOW!
It wasn’t Karen Carpenter who did the remake of this song. It was Mariah Carey. And, no one will ever sing it like Harry Nilsson.
Don't remember the Carpenter's doing this song but Neilson covered this song. Badfinger originally did this song and Mariah Carey also covered it. For my money this is the best version
Badfinger was in the studio when Nilsson recorded this.
Nilsson owns this one.
Harry's version is the most famous one.
This was written by Badfinger songwriters. They both committed suicide.
It wasn't Karen carpenter it was Mariah Carey but this was done 10 years before her and it is Harry's song but it was written by the lead singer of bad finger

GREETINGS EARTH PEOPLE: The Beatles whp were Harry's drinking buddies, considered Nilsson the best voice in contemporary music at one point.
The song was written by Pete Ham & Tom Evans of BadFinger who did it 1st! I'm pretty sure its been covered by quite a few people. For me this is one of the best versions, because it is very REAL. Personally I find Karen Carpenter's voice and technical prowess are superb, but I always feel like she emotes in a shielded way, that is not so heart felt, as "played" like it's a well worn theatrical production.

As far as I can tell by looking on YT, Karen Carpenter didn't cover this song, but did a couple of songs that sound similar at least lyrically. They are "I Can't Live A Day Without You, and "i Can't Smile Without You", which is a bit more similar melodically,... though i don't find either mistakable, as the melodies, chords structure etc, are really totally different. There was a Movie made in Philippines with Sarah Gernimo to one of those Karen. C songs. I think there may have been a movie with this BadFinger song "Without You"..
Badfinger wrote it & recorded it in 1970!!

Badfinger wrote it, Harry covered it - and it became HIS! Everyone else, especially Mariah Carey just covered it. The Carpenters never did, at least I've never heard it if they did!
