We follow a sombre story as nine chicks prepare to fledge their nest, but one appears very frail. In this harrowing journey, we witness one of the chicks falling at the last hurdle and not making it out with its siblings.
This is the journey of how nine Eurasian Blue Tit chicks fledged their nest in South Cumbria, UK. On the morning of fledging, all was looking well for the brood but one appeared noticeably smaller than its siblings. The mother returns to the nest to check on the frail chick and makes one final attempt to encourage it to leave. Unfortunately, the chick did not make it on this occasion, and there could be several reasons for this. Lack of food, disease or malnutrition are all factors that could lead to this.
Fledging the nest can be a hazardous journey, and only the fittest and most able to survive. Although this may appear cruel, this is Nature’s way of ensuring that the species continue to thrive in the wild.
