Really great and thoughtful design to minimize distance from ceiling to bottom of boat. Two recommendations - use four pulleys to reduce pull effort and replace those 800-pound screw things with carabiners to save time hooking/unhooking this contraption. Thanks for the detailed explanation!!

Just called Hobie about using PVC pipe to store PA's in my garage . Their answer was from Hobie Quote NG you are much better using a flat piece of 3/4'' plywood than PVC . The PVC will deform you bottom in a hot garage after time.

Great video! I'm looking at maybe using this hoist for a couple of kayaks -- I like the idea of just being able to slide them on vs. having to put them in straps each time. Will keep this in mind!

Great video and design. I got my Hobie Pro 12 last month and installed my lift exactly per your video. Works great. I only have a 9-ft garage height and this design allows plenty of room beneath the kayak when lifted to the ceiling.

I like this idea and will be putting together soon for my PA14. I'm planning on gluing Pool Noodles onto the PVC pipes for some cushion. My Garage is insulated so it doesn't get too hot plus I use my Yak quite often so it doesn't sit for long periods of time. Thanks for the video.

I don't see why you would even need to unhook the lines-just pull the kayak out forward. But, thank you sop much for this video. I am getting my 2020 Hobie PA12 360 on Saturday and because of you already ordered this hoist. Now your build has really helped. WIll be following your direction.

Excellent video. I am just about to purchase a Hobbie PA 14. Storage is my biggest issue. Your engineering of the hoist is excellent. Would have like more on the hoist itself. If you have another video on that please let me know.

I've got one of these on the way now for a Hobie Mirage Sport 12'. My ceiling joists are oriented in the other direction. Would you anticipate any problems with that? With my Mirage I will load it into and out of my pick-up truck like another viewer posted about. I think I've got that figured out but I'm trying to avoid any surprises. Thanks

Would be better to use climbing carabiners. But I’m confused how this helps loading unloading boat onto car? Do you not drop this right on top of your car ? Would be nice to see a demo on loading and unloading

Can you describe what kind of pulleys and how the rope is threaded?. It looks like there are 4 single pulleys in the corners but I can’t figure out what’s in the front middle.

Does the Harken Hoister have a minimum distance that you must have for attaching to the wall? I would like to set mine up like yours except I don't want to put it on top of the garage door, I would like it to be closer to the wall where the "block and tackle" attaches to.

Jose Andrade the uplift distance will have to equal the same distance on the top when you're pulling. So what you can do is put it on the opposite side and pull back to the garage door and then corner it, you could go on hurricane choice instructions to get an idea of what the actual distance is it all depends on how high your garage ceiling is.

Do you think you would have made the PVC a bit longer. And do you think gluing on some pool noodles to the PVC might add protection to the yak? Great job btw. Disclaimer: I'm not trying to pick apart your work I'm just about to start this same project and wanted to cover all my basis first.

The PVC length he is using corresponds to the flat or straight profile of the hull. If you go back or forth from this length of PVC, the pipe will no longer contact the hull for it curves upwards and away from the PVC. But this works out well for he is supporting more than a third of the hull from these crosspoints. One uses these same principles for a ground or truck bed mounted stand. Please note that this profile is particular to each model and year generation of kayak. The Outback is a little more curved in it's rocker.

Is there any particular reason why you couldn't hang it further from your garage door? I'm thinking that if the garage door wasn't in the way I could just back my truck into my garage and just lower it directly onto my truck bed.

  • @AZBASSREAPER

Joe C you have to have the same distance from ceiling to the ground, so if you're ceiling is 10 feet you would have to give it 10 feet. So make sure that you measure your sibling to ground before you purchase it because there's 12 footers as well

You mentioned you only need 21" for this project. How much clearance do you have from the opened garage door to the bottom of the PA12 with the completed project?

  • @blackknights54

21 inches is all you need

  • @blackknights54

That is correct 21 inches is the clearance you would need and yes, the hobie is 20 inches . When you install the 2X4 the railing of the hobie will be flat on the ceiling of the garage when you lift it. Just make sure you get the distance correctly from the front to the back of the railing. (the railing should be in between both 2X4)

It’s interesting but this is not a pulling system. You definitely require a lot of effort to pull the kayak up. Research how pulling system work before do this.
