Also, the captain of the boat is black. And it makes sense. He's the captain of an African ship. They didn't shoehorn him in as something that would have been anachronistic to the time. He's an intelligent, charming man. No pandering. And it's not noted within the film because it doesn't need to be.

When there weren't many movies coming out in theaters early this year, my local AMC movie theater showed Raiders of the Lost Ark one day for $5/ticket. Only about a dozen people in the theater with me. It was awesome! I've seen the movie countless times before but never in a theater. One of the best theater experiences I've had in a very long time.

Saw it a few years ago during an anniversary at the theatre w my brother. Raiders is a perfect film . Temple would be perfect if 2 scenes were cut. Crusade is saved by the star power of the actors. The crystal skull was awful

@@themydnighthour They were showing both trilogies in Edinburgh when cinemas opened again this year. I've seen LoTR in cinema as a teenager, but now to think of it, I should have went to see at least Return of the Jedi. I did go to see Taxi Driver and Total Recall though.

I met Paul Freeman at a convention once (nice guy). When I told him that Belloq would have been a great recurring villain, his response was, "I agree."

He was a reluctant hero, an every man that fought dirty when he needed to. Audiences and critics loved that when the opposit were Stallone and Arnold types muscling and blasting their way through everything. It was a good counter balance.

It was also not in the script, Indy was meant to engage in combat with him but Ford had been unwell with a stomach bug so improvised with the gunshot and the rest of the scene carried on rolling

Part of the comedy is meta, they hired a real master swordsman and had a huge swordfight planned out and because Harrison Ford had a tummy ache, he just shot him instead.

The moment at the climax where his father tells him to let go is just a great mirror to the intro scene in the house. His father was obsessed with the grail giving less priority to his son. Now those positions have switched.

Spielberg latched on to Williams early. At one point, Williams had scored18 of the 20 greatest grossing movies of all time. Watch the original Star Wars movie without the soundtrack and the excitement is just not there. Williams is the boss, no doubt!

When Spielberg asked Williams to score _Schindler's List,_ Williams told him he needed a better composer.; Spielberg replied "Yes, I know - but they're all dead!" 😁

On the subject of the submarine not submerging on the way to nazi island: Subs in that era were almost twice as fast on the surface as they were under it. Since the nazis were in a hurry and not actively at war at the time they would have stayed on the surface to complete the trip in a day instead of two, giving Indy something to surf on.

Absolutely correct on the surface vs. submerged capabilities. We do know though that U-26 travelled submerged at periscope depth since in the film the Captain gives the order to dive and one of the officers announces the scope is clear.

Yes, that is a detail that supports general world building instead of being plothole. I have a vague recollection that as kids we might have wondered why didn't the sub travel submerged, but that was just ignorance because we did not know the speed difference because they have different propulsion system for different needs. I actually came across similar case of lack of information, when Red Letter media guys were chuckling how in Event Horizon explosives had "Explosive" written on them with bright bold letters like that is some cartoonish thing. Which has nothing to do with movies or exposition, but in reality most especially military grade stuff has information on the package that this really is high explosive and usually which type is it like e.g. C4. Because even the lowliest non expert grunt should recognize the explosive stuff without special knowledge (and probably also to make it even clearer in high stress environment).

Not only that, a submerged U-Boat cannot use its diesel engines since they require air, so they'd have to use batteries which wouldn't get them very far. But if you've seen Das Boot, you'd know they keep the officers on the conning towers to help navigate the ship and prevent collisions (leaving Indy with no practical chance to hide) and this film stole this U-Boat from Das Boot. When the production of Das Boot went to start filming for the day, they found their submarine missing and wondered what happened.

Very tense and being British I've been brought up on the allies as hero's so it was nice to see things from the axis point of view and that there were heroic stories on both sides, something that Hollywood and Pinewood tend to ignore

Like Royeaux mentioned when running on the surface there would have been crew on the deck. Indy would have had to have hidden. Oddly I don't think this bothered me for years. It was more Bad Guys Were Getting Away and Our Hero Catches Up. Older cynical me started to frown, but fresh faced shorter me was happy.

The scene where Indy and Marcus fill in the Army Intel guys on the Ark is the best piece of fact finding/foreshadowing/plot building ever .

U-Boats & other submarines of the time weren’t like those we are familiar with today. They were surface vessels that had the ability to go under water.

Correct, when WWII era submarines were in transit, they traveled on the surface. While on the surface, they were faster and were propelled by their diesel engines and therefore conserve their batteries. If spotted, they had to be able to submerge fast.

It was a plot point in Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea when a WW2 U-Boat Captain took over the Seaview and cruised around on the surface because he didn't realise that nuclear subs are faster underwater.

I showed my two year old the truck scene from raiders. Now he sings the theme when he plays with his toys. Even toddlers know good cinema when they see it.

I love the bit when they are talking about Marcus to the Germans saying that they will never find him as he speaks ten languages and is an expert in this and that and will blend in. Cuts to a confused Marcus in a business suit asking for directions :)

As mentioned, the Giant German mechanic that fought Indy around the plane, was a giant Nepalese dude in the bar at the beginning, was also a Thuggee guard in Temple of Doom and an officer in the Last Crusade. His name was Pat Roach, formerly a wrestler and was in the long running comedy drama on UK tv, Aug Wiedersehen Pet. Was also a Celtic Chieftain in Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves... Great watching this Happy hour, knowing the Indy films so well myself. Raiders still my favourite, although Last Crusade coming a close second.

I was going to say all that. Good job I did a search of the comments first. Pat Roach's character in Auf Wiedersehen Pet had this great West Country accent and kept referring to himself in the third person. It was a great series largely written by the pair who gave the great Ronnie Barker his finest hours in Porridge..

“Und this is how we say goodbye in Germany...” that moment kills me every time. What great, fun, well done film making that even the stereotypically severe and stern Prussian-Junker SS officer, Baron von Bad-Guy, is somehow not tired and cliche.

Temple of Doom still has the most memorable Indiana Jones moments for me. The heart ripping priest, short round, Indy and short round playing cards, stewed monkey brains... the crushing trap with the spikes... Out of the three, it's definitely got the most.

One thing I'll say for Temple of Doom, is that for it's frenetic pace and incredibly dark moments, it makes the audience work for our happy ending. That movie's a rollercoaster of emotions but those scenes in the village at the end with grass on the hills and the captured children returning home feel like, we've been through some dark dark places in this movie, so the ending feels even sweeter I guess.

To me it’s on the same level of the Alien vs Aliens debate. It ultimately boils down to personal preference. I never really liked Temple of Doom even though it’s a great watch that I would happily do again.

​@@NathanCassidy721 I think it's tremendously underrated, and as a plot, it's better than the first one. The sets are the best of any of the movies. It literally looks like what you imagine a D&D dungeon could be. Every altar, the history of the temple and the stones, secret passages, traps, human sacrifices, flayed skin in the windows, the horror and screaming of the children toiling in the mine. It's so dark, and bizarre, the mysticism is so good, the bugs, the rope bridge scene, a totally valid deus ex machina of the british soldiers finally showing up at the end. Each character has clear motivation, especially the priest, at the end, where he's dealing on a 100 or 1000 year time scale when it comes to getting the stones, and doesn't care if they end up in the river. Short Round is great. Even Willie has a character arc.

Disney: (makes Indy 5) Me: They chose… poorly.

I've always liked how Spielberg did the map transitions when Indy was traveling on the plane to Budapest. A magical film. He is able to handle serious subjects like Nazis in a comic book almost soft fashion here and then you see Shindler's List and they are handled as your would expect IRL.

My dad showed me and my older brother these movies before we were 10 and they are even more fun to watch over 20 years later. This stream was delightful, gentlemen! Thank you!

Speaking as an archaeologist, Indie is more treasure hunter, he's an academic archaeologist, but in practical terms he doesn't study the sites properly, or use any methodologies, it's questionable what he actually learns, he seems to prioritise women and gold! Heyho he's still the best 'archaeologist' on screen. Belloch is more of a real archaeologist actually, because he's actually conducting a real excavation on the site

Temple of Doom always felt like it was made specifically for kids like me, I was heavy into horror at a young age and as awesome as indy is, the best bits for me are the gory bits like the end of raiders, temple of Doom scratches that itch.

I never realized how talented Doomcock is at accents and reciting movie lines. He underutilizes that expertise in his standard content. I kinda wish he wasn't so straight jacketed into that character in his channel.

Indiana Jones is basically the first Cosplay that I’ve ever done. Definitely one of the coolest film characters ever to be put on screen.

I have a very soft spot for Temple of Doom. I just love it. Yeah it's not better than Raiders and Last Crusade but it has so many memorable moments and it takes a lot of chances, tries to be something fresh. The music is excellent, that main theme is amazing. And Ford is so jacked, really worked out for this one.

Not directly Indiana Jones related, but as an example of how disposable modern cinema is the new Mortal Kombat released to theaters April 23, 2021. I bought it yesterday (sept 24) from the $5 Walmart discount bin. Hollywood doesn't care if these things are remembered even a year later these days. Why would anyone expect they'd put the effort into making something of a quality that will be still viewed decades later?

I don’t think Indy was awkward around women. In Marion’s bar he was very cool about their relationship, rather Bondish in fact. When Marion was tearing into him, he basically says.” I did what I did, it happened. I can only apologise so many times. Either shut up about it or get over it kid” The thing that made him uncomfortable at the University was the fact that it was one of his students that was hitting on him. His student, not some woman. We also see him in TLC being rather suave with the lady Doctor (I can’t think of her name atm) and although she was trying to seduce him, he admits that he was doing the same thing to her.So Doomcock saying that Indiana doesn’t work in TOD because he was awkward around women and wasn’t a ladies man just doesn’t hold water for me.

@@TheGreekPapa You're both very right. As a matter of fact, it was a conscious choice from Spielberg since he couldn't do an official Bond film but always wanted to. And I'm pretty certain I've heard him mention once that at the beginning of Raiders, when Marcus comes and visits Indy at his home, a scene was deleted where Indy was in fact already having champagne and courting a woman (possibly the "I love you" student from earlier, but I could be wrong) which is why the bottle is already opened when Marcus enters the room.

Exactly. There were a few moments throughout this video where the duo made questionable remarks... 1/ The aforementioned case of them saying that Indy was awkward around women in Raiders (as you correctly stated, Indy was distracted and flummoxed because it was one of his student's doing that, during one of his lectures... not because she was a woman in love with him). 2/ Them saying that they "THINK that Elsa intentionally chose the wrong grail for Donovan to drink out of of" in The Last Crusade. I mean... no sh!t, Sherlock! That's obviously the entire point of that scene and yet you're not sure?! 3/ Critical Drinker saying "I don't know why Ray Winstone keeps getting work". I mean, FFS! Ray Winstone is a wonderful actor. Maybe Critical Drinker should try watching some great films such as 'Scum', 'Nil By Mouth' and 'Sexy Beast' before making outrageous comments like that. The problem with Mac as a character was the way in which he was written. It's not Ray Winstone's fault that he had to work with terrible dialogue and nonsensical character motivations.

The intro and all of the Jungle Scenes to Raiders of the Lost Ark was filmed on my Home Island of Kauai, Hawaii. And all of the Shots where you see Indy from the back, before his face reveal, was actually a Friend of mine who stood in as a Body Double for Harrison Ford. I don’t think Harrison was even on the Island yet at that Point. Because my friend hasn’t ever met him. Just the Film Crew…. Ahhh! The Magic of Cinema! 😅

Indiana Jones was one of my first Hollywood film experiences. Growing up in Denmark during the 80s, TV was utter shite, so my folks rented Indiana Jones. I was a happy 7-year-old.

Moloram’s custom design was brilliant. He’s got a cow skull on his head, which is just creepy in general, but out right blasphemous to a Hindu. Just brilliant visual storytelling.

Right, well they obviously missed the memo that these are just escapist fantasy stories. No one thinks that they’re depicting real things. You notice of course that they take no offense to pretty much every white person being a cartoonish super-Nazi or a Nazi collaborator. Now, where things get really weird is that the post-colonialism thought of “easternism” would insist the other direction in stereotyping. Take Shang Chi, for example. This is a movie for Chinese people, starring Chinese people, about Chinese things. So what’s the story going to be about? Well, our lead is involved with a super-secret society of magical Kung fu killers who has to travel to the land of mystical-bull shit and dragons to win the approval of his father and restore the balance of Confusionist familial ethics. It certainly wouldn’t click with Chinese people to portray China and Chinese culture as a sophisticated and highly advanced place where people trend towards highly valuing education, hard work, and excel in STEM fields. No, no, no, that would be craaaazy. That would be enforcing the hegemonic influences of their former oppressors and their values into them, because there’s just nooooo way anyone else on the planet values science and mathematics besides the Europeans! Certainly no one else would come to that way of thinking without them destroying their cultural heritage and “natural” trajectory! China’s all about Kung fu, mysticism, and philosophizing about life and nature in a silk robe and funny hat. I’m convinced that if Indy actually made it to Deli, and it was anything other than Ghandi, Mother Theresa, and a magical yogi floating outside the Taj Mahal, they would cry foul.

I know it's out of the voice-processed character, but it's so great to hear the man behind Doomcock talking about things he loves. And Temple of Doom is great. Of course Indy doesn't behave like Indy from Raiders, because it happens earlier. I got no problem with that. I kinda always saw the finale of that one as Indy growing into the guy he is in Raiders. He's struggling to climb up, has the bad guy on him, and manages to prevail after he lets go (of most) of what he was chasing after. There are no bad movies in the Indy trilogy.

No one mentioned that the dreaded Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm fame was one of the dancers in the "Anything Goes" musical number.

Speilberg borrowed Wolfgang Peterson's submarine he was using to shoot "Das Boot".

I was about 12. After church one Sunday, our youth pastor took a group of us to the movies. I watched this movie with my 3 brothers and was amazed. We never said a word and it’s still one of my favorites… Next we saw Tron!

1:04:32 - the weapon Indy has there is a Soviet RPG-2 (late 1950s). I think you're right, I think they were going for a German Panzerfaust (1944) since you can see the cone-shaped warhead protruding from the end of the weapon, which yes, would also be an anachronism. It's all fine, Belloq saves the scene when he eats the bug. :D :D :D

Absolutely great discussion of the film and breakdown of the parts. I'd point out two really important ones that you skipped. The first was during the discussion with the government agents when Indy mentioned Tannis. He briefly explained the history including the fact that once they returned with the Ark the city was hit with sandstorm that lasted until everything and everyone was wiped off the face of the earth. Talk about awesome foreshadowing.... Second was just a little more depth to belloch as a character when the Nazi threw her into the pit and he almost got himself shot because he was protesting and saying she was supposed to be his. Then he took the time to tell her he was sorry and you can tell he actually meant it. He was an amoral person, But not an evil one. I'm sure if he could have had his way Indy would have been kept alive to be able to find out what was in the ark as a sign of respect and he would have taken Marion with him because of his actual attraction and affection for her. Very nice writing moments.

Raiders of the Los Ark is the only movie that I hid between the seats after first viewing so I could watch it twice (I was a kid and didn't have enough $ to get another ticket). Doomcock, same with me. Had no idea what to expect. Best overall movie ever!

I honestly believe that Willie was fantastic. Granted they gave her the blond air-head role, but despite this she did a great job. To me she was head and shoulders above that chick from last Crusade (Elsa). Far more personable. I love the scene when Indy & short round are playing cards while Willie is running about screaming her head off. Hellarious 🤣🤣

Kate Capshaw who played Willie was in Temple of Doom and Dreamscape in 1984 so she got to play opposite Harrison Ford and Dennis Quaid in their prime and she met Steven Spielberg, her future husband, so I figure that must have been a good year for her.

The AMC multiplex in Oceanside, CA played Raiders for over a year. I saw it opening weekend, not really knowing what to expect other than that Spielberg and Lucas were involved. A twelve year old mind was blown that day, and I first became conscious of how cinematography , editing, writing, music and acting all came together to produce cinematic excellence. Saw it 9 times that summer. Great times!

I could listen to you two talk about this stuff all day. Good stuff fellas 👍

The call back to the 1930s adventure movies and literature with the Raiders franchise is amazing...If you watch Turner Classic movie channel you see so many parallels and story beats...It is timeless fun that any generation can enjoy...Indy is smart but tough...thoughtful but brave.

Great stream guys! I was born in '67 so that entire arc of great film from Star Wars to T2 was mine/ours to revel in.

Fun fact I eventually realized, the Toht character was essentially a 1 for 1 recreation of a character Peter Lori played in one of the invisible man sequels, where he was supposed to be a Japanese agent working with the Nazis. When you see Lori in the role it seems impossible that they didn't have him in mind when they cast that character.

Pat Roach aka the Bomber, remember watching him wrestling in the UK in the 1980s.

Little known fact. Up until Crystal Skull the only actor to appear in all three Indiana Jones films apart from Ford was Pat Roach. He had two roles in Raiders - Sherpa in bar and Nazi bald guy who gets it in the face. He then played the guard in the caves in the second, and in the third Spielberg gave him an extra role in the scene with Alexi Sayle (Roach was dying of cancer at this time). But still, he's the only actor to have appeared in the first three with Ford.

The Venice boat scenes were filmed in Tilbury, Essex, UK for The Last Crusade

It was pretty enjoyable. A much darker adventure than Raiders. Short Round was precious. Also, Kate Capshaw was ridiculously sexy in it.

I love Raiders so much, and appreciate that anyone who went to Sunday school (or Hebrew school, I suppose) and remembers the early events of the Books of Samuel gets to be in on a bit of an insider foreshadowing: treating the Ark of the Covenant like it’s some kinda lucky charm? Ignoring the *very* specific instructions for how to handle it? Not gonna go well for you, my dude.

I saw Last Crusade first growing up. I’ve wanted to go to Venice ever since, but so many people have told me it’s not what it used to be. Pushing 40, I still haven’t made it.

One of the Grail Knights "died of extreme old age" in France, so it follows that the Grail bestowed longevity outside of the Temple.

The Marvel comic of Raiders covers the trip back to the island. Yes they run on the diesel engines, submerged but with the periscope up. At first Indy thinks they're going to fully submerge, so panics, but realises they're going to run with the scope, so lashes himself to it with his whip. Which was supposed to be in the film, but was clearly cut for time.

They ran on batteries when submerged and it limited their speed and range.

@@TheVCRTimeMachine Only when deeply submerged. When they ran at periscope depth they ran on their diesel engine with an air vent and exhaust exposed. So OK the comic got it wrong as it only showed the periscope exposed. But then I doubt you'd want to lash yourself to the exhaust for risk of prolonged carbon monoxide exposure.

@@grindelston5968 not diesel fumes, carbon monoxide! Yeah diesel engines are more efficient at burning off its fuel, so produces less CO, prolonged exposure is still fatal. And pretty certain a mainly submerged UBoat exhaust would be cold. Have you seen how long these exhaust are? They're huge

My two favourite guys! what a treat listening to two passionate movie fans. Last Crusade is my favourite because of the dad aspect and Sean Connery.

In Raiders, The South American corridor (equipped with deadly spikes and darts) wasn't 'magic' to stay out of the light. Indy strongly suspected pressure stones in the floor, and never fully trusted his helper. Indy used the 'light' to throw off his helper while pushing down a pressure stone. Everything at the end of Last Crusade excluding the Grail power wasn't magic, but sophisticated illusions. The 'Path of God' was a perspective illusion. The 'Breath of God' may have had the same type of mechanism as the South American corridor, but with a delayed release of the blades. There are so many Raiders hark backs in Last Crusade.

In Temple of Doom, Indiana was not interested in attaining "fortune and glory" for himself. He felt sympathy for the villagers and their plight and was thus motivated to bring back the stones and free the children. Also, being an archaeologist, he was genuinely interested in the stones and wanted to see them for himself. Also, while I think of it, what's so bad about Indiana stumbling into adventures? I like to imagine that this sort of thing happens to him occasionally while he's off seeing to his main objective. One last thing - the elder of the village claims that their God was guiding Indiana and his companions to India and was protecting them along the way, so seeing as Indiana Jones is set in a world where the supernatural exists, I can go along with the far fetched means of their arrival to India.

I remember seeing Raiders at the cinema when it first came out (I was 14) and then at a later date going round my mates house where his uncle was visiting - his uncle being Terry Richards, who played the Arabian swordsman (the one Indie shoots)

Outstanding as usual… but doomcock disguising his voice like that, I prefer my future ruler of earth to have that basso profundo voice 😏

Gutted I missed the whole original livestream but glad to be back for the catch up.

I think the immortality is not temple bound, but requires you drink from the Grail regularly, and the Grail IS bound to the temple.

Harrison Ford came up with just shooting the swordsman.

Love the Indy trilogy. I believe Indy always being skeptical of mythology is a purposeful cinematic trope that George and Steven wanted in the films.

Saw it on its opening weekend. Only film I ever saw that, upon exiting the theater, I felt blown away

To DC and Drinker, WW2 submarines are surface vessels primarily, they only submerge for under special circumstances normally in war. WW2 Subs needed air for their diesil engines and travelled much faster on the surface than underwater using battery power. So the plot hole about the sub only being on the surface is not a plot hole at all. You are probably thinking of modern sub which stays submerged most of the time.

Really enjoyed listening to two people who love the art of cinema indulge in a series they thoroughly enjoyed (mostly). Have listened over a few car journeys and this has made me wish I could have joined in on the chat. My personal favourite of the series is the last crusade. Should have remained the final movie of indy’s story.

I really like doomcock in these discussions. He’s a smart guy and isn’t engaging in what I suspect are made up rumors from made up sources that are always wrong. His commentary here is excellent, informative and insightful.

Cameron Diaz in "The Mask" is another Great Reveal. The camera crawls up her soaking wet legs in that split red dress then up to her face and hair shaking the rain off. Iconic. Also, Pat Roach was in "Auf Wiedersehen Pet" on British TV.

Something I noticed watching Raiders last night: Sallah shouts out "Henry!" as Indy is being lowered down into the snake pit.

No matter how many times I watch it and at this point it's been hundreds every time that real pretty ghost floats up and stares right at the camera and turns herself into a skeleton it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up and I get goosebumps all over

When I first saw Raiders, I was a little late and came in when they were in the cave w/ Alfred Molina. I thought the previous screening was running late and that was the climax of the movie.

Didn't realise how fast-paced Raiders was until a rewatch recently. As you intimated, nothing is wasted in the script; there's no throwaway bollocks or statements just for the sake of it - just a tightly-written script that takes us on an adventure from beginning to end.

This is a great conversation covering a great movie and fun to listen to. Tanks!

Regarding the climax to Raiders, I think the power of the ark-opening scene is that it shows what happens on the level of divine power. The human actors have done all they can and exhausted all their options, which brings them all to the climactic, single choice of opening, which must be done by humans with human motivations; but what happens afterward is literally an act of God. The principle of the Nazis - that nothing stands above totalitarian will - is tested against the essential principle of divinity - that the divine power which surpasses humanity is itself a conscious power, not merely mindless energy that can be used in the pursuit of any goal, all of which are objectively equal. This is of course foreshadowed by the clear communication that the power of the ark does not like the Nazi regime when that power burns out the swastika on the crate it is sheathed in.

Moore was a fine Bond. When he bothered to play the role.

Moore wanted d to retire 2 movies before he did. He took the money he got from octopussy and view to a kill and started a charity. Hard to hate him for that

The Scify network made a great show called "Warehouse 13" and I think it was supposed to be based on the warehouse the arc was stored in at the end of Raiders. The premise was an employee stole a bunch of artifacts and sold them on the black market and two new fbi agent types must recover the artifacts. The novelist from unforgiven plays the man running the warehouse and assigning their missions.

Sounds like a ripoff of the old Friday The 13th show that was on Fox long ago. Had nothing to do with Jason and the hockey mask.

@@jkdbuck7670 They made reference to that, at one point Artie says almost half of the warehouses collection was gathered from an antique store that was larger on the inside than the outside. I watched both shows during their runs. Warehouse 13 is slightly better as a show, friday the 13th had the hotter female lead.

You guys are severely underrating Temple of Doom. How can you say it doesn't feel like Indiana Jones? Its Indy at his swashbuckling, archaeological explorer at his best!

It does the swashbuckling action right, yeah, but the character is inconsistent with the previous movie, that's why they didn't like it as much.
