Happy Hour #15 - Robocop (feat. Danquish)

I'd buy that for a dollar! It's party time in Old Detroit as Danquish and I review Paul Verhoeven's 1987 classic, Robocop. Your move, creep.

Peter Weller (Robocop) is very passionate about this movie, he goes deep into the philosophy of the story of Robobcop, I had the pleasure to meet him at the 2019 Fan Expo and he signed my mini poster I have of the film and I got to tell him that my father is not big into science fiction movies but he loves Robocop to which he replied with “Well I don’t consider Robocop a science fiction movie it’s a movie about the rebirth of a spirit” cool guy Peter is 👍🏻

Super cool actor. He went though a lot for the part , too; apparently it took so many hours to assemble/put on/take off the costume, he tried to avoid using the bathroom as much & became extremely dehydrated. Took him some time to recover his health after the film, but he's a serious professional that did what he had to do.

I like how he brings just a little bit of himself into his roles when he can. When you watch "Screamers" he has ancient artifacts and model pyramids and the like on his desk. In real life he's a huge hisotory buff and has done numorous documentaries on Egypt and Rome. I believe he's also a professor? I'm not sure, but I think he's got a formal education of some kind. Cool dude.

Ah Paul Verhoeven, such a remarkable film maker responsible for quite a streak of unique movies. My native the Netherlands would do well to be proud of this man's contributions to hollywood cinema. At the start of this year, Verhoeven was given the inaugural Rutger Hauer prize, named after the Dutch acting legend with whom Paul made several classic Dutch language movies, and who sadly passed away last year. Thank God both of them have gotten to show their talents to the world and make their marks on cinema!

I always think of Robocop like a pyramid. You have the base of it , the action. Next level you get the satire. Then a story of justice and revenge. Higher still you have the social commentary about a dystopic society run by corporations. And at the very top you have the story of a man being dehumanized, becoming a machine and rediscovering his humanity in the end. All of these elements support one another and there's something for everyone, a sign of top notch film making in my book.

I always felt another thing that added to the co-ed nature of Robocop was that Murphy and Lewis were basically interchangeable twins. They're both good-natured & lighthearted compared to everyone else in the movie. Alex is a unisex name, and Anne is referred to as 'Lewis' the entire movie. She could have any last name, but hers is a typical man's name. They even have similar haircuts. Maybe these commonalities are why they instantly get on as partners. Before things turn for the worse they seem like they're having fun chasing the van in the beginning. And when murphy gets killed, she is never the same either. Presumably, as a Detroit police officer shes accustomed to death of colleagues (for example the chief, as much as it pains him, carries on when he loses an officer) but Murphy's death affects her deeply enough to continually go outside the bounds of her job. There are so many layers to Robocop that you can go on and on forever about them.

Rob Bottin did the gore effects and suit design for Robocop…you may recognise his work from The Thing. He is a special effects genius. The scene with Norris on the table with the defibrillator, they had a dummy of Norris’ body with the chomping teeth and the actor, Charles Hallahan, had his head stuck through the table. I imagine they did something similar for Murphy's gruesome death.

  • @matthewcollins504

One of the greatest movies of all time, with not a single scene or line of dialogue wasted; it all fits together perfectly. Clarence Boddicker and his gang are just the best villains ever; you want them to die, but you love them because they're just too damn fun to watch. They say that a hero is nothing without a good villain to fight, and this is true with the Boddicker Gang as they were the ones who literally made Robocop, took everything from him; his life, his family and his very humanity and Robocop's story arc, his desire to reclaim his humanity, is for the most part secondary to his desire to avenge his death. Not other Robocop villain has been able to hurt him the way the Boddicker Gang have; Cain was just an evil counterpart and his conflict with Robocop wasn't really all that interesting, and the less said about McDaggart, the better. I like The Old Man (the ocp president) and his nuanced characterization in this movie; it's really hard to nail him down. Sometimes he seems like a ruthless businessman, but at other times he seems, like Dick Jones suggests, "a sweet old man who means well." The ambiguity between his "ruthless business man" and "sweet old man" personas was rather interesting and I was disappointed when the second movie just made him straight up villainous. When I first saw Robocop, it was om TV One on Foxtel, and it was VERY censored; pretty much all the foul language was muted and violence was cut out; in spite of how butchered the movie was, I still thought it was great. It was only when I saw the Director's Cut, did I realize what a masterpiece this movie is, and it's something I always recommend to my friends.

Wonderful discussion, guys. Robocop is a truly special movie and I’ll never forget seeing it for the first time at age 14 at a movie theater. Almost 35 years later and it still can’t be beat. Also, you are correct, most of the film was shot in Dallas, but the exterior steel mill scenes were shot in Monessen, Pennsylvania at a defunct steel mill. And Murphy’s death was actually filmed in Los Angeles after they wrapped production in Texas.

Also Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner etc needed to be talked about on your Star Trek film streams but weren't. Such a shame.

I thought the same thing about Clarence. If you just looked at the character on paper, you wouldn't think of Kurtwood Smith in the role. He looks more like an accountant. But he actually played it perfectly. These days they just cast some forgettable meathead as the thug/gangster type character.

Robocop's gun, Called the Auto-9 in world. Was actually a Beretta 93R with alot of furniture added at the front, basically a compensator as well as vent holes to make the muzzle flash bigger. But most of all, is the 3 round burst fire which is a feature of the 93R with the sound effect for the gun making sound like every trigger pull is 3 shots. Trivia, the original gun for Robocop was to be a Desert Eagle, which is an enormous pistol but looks small in Robocop's hands. So they went with sexing up a 93R instead.

This movie was totally hilarious I watched it again last night thanks for all the laughs guys. Your finishing discussion about how normal it is to die at board meetings at OCP in Detroit made me die laughing. What a classic film with awesome mind bending suggestions about cybernetics and asking what will the future be like from the 80s perspective. Perfect choice to talk about an actual good film that overcomes all its drawbacks by EXCELLENT ACTING and a great script that answers all sorts of genres. I'll go away now 😆

Oh and check out this surprising decent film imo - Stephen King's Night Flier starring Miguel Ferrer. It's some of his best acting IMO and makes him a legend in his own. He was perfect for that role casting. It's not what you'd expect but for a lesser known film. There was just something weird and disturbing about that film, but it was Stephen King so I guess that's expected. He's got so many great book to film adaptations.

My mom and dad rented RoboCop for me when I was 7 and they said they didn't pay any attention at all to the rating. There were toys and a cartoon so when I asked if we could get it, they thought it was a kids' movie. They got it for me because I wanted to be a police officer; watched it; ...didn't want to be a cop anymore. ...maybe they actually did know what it was rated.

2:20:50 Dick Jones is stacking the deck, that’s why he’s in with Clarence. There’s already a crime problem for ED209 to solve, the payoff being they get to build Delta City and test run ED209 for the military, which is certain to be successful with the Dick Jones in tight with THE boss of crime in Old Detroit, who’s able to make crime lie low for a bit with the promise of an even bigger, working market to work with when construction begins.

Not sure if it was made on purpose or simply a funny coincidence, but "RoBoCoP" is a TetraGrammaton that includes the 4 directives hidden in plane sight in the freaking name itself with some basic programming binary on/off stuff (it really IS RoboJesus after all). The last directive is hidden since set to 1 (if letter =Ø/zero => show directive, if Letter =1/one => hide directive ) R-Ø, B-Ø, C-Ø, P- [1]. Robocop is the gift that keep on giving... the more I watch the movie the more symbolism, nods and stuff I find... less obvious that the literally walking on water and "coming back from death"... I'm not sure it was on purpose but I remember that even the date of release of the movie gave you something that was relevant to the movie and it's theme.

I find this very entertaining to listen to :) I love this movie! The scene where we see the robocop for the first time as he walks into the police station! Holy shit! The costume and sound design blew me away! And this holds up to this day! I remember watching those movies as a kid and thinking "I definietly shouldn't be watching this right now" 😂 Robocop seemd like a superhero movie but was pretty horrifying in some moments 😂 The second one fucked me up a bit when they cut him to pieces and threw him on the street😱 Kane freaked me the fuck out as well! It's so interesting to go back to those movies and seeing some many more layers to them! Now I have to watch it again! :) Great episode!
