while you make a fascinating point, I think it was Doom who was right in the end. The problem with "trusting your sword" is that this trust is still tied to the hand that wields it. So basically, even if the steel does not let you down (which incidentally happened in the end when his Fathers Sword broke, thereby "betraying" his wielder), the hand might. You can see that also in the ending when he decapitates Doom with the broken sword of his Father. Doom is about to get to him, lull him into basically betraying himself but his sheer willpower triumphs and breaks the spell at which point even the broken sword of his Father becomes a deadly Weapon in the Hands of a man dedicated to take revenge.

To answer the riddle, Conan must see that while steel will grow brittle and the flesh will age, it is will and conviction that prevail. It is by will and belief that the flesh is motivated to wield the sword, to use that sword rightly and not against the weak and unfortunate. Steel is not elevated only through brute force, detailed craftsmanship, or even strength of your hand. Its power comes from the clear belief and conviction of the one who wields it.

One of the best action movies of all time. People always criticised it for a being a dumb flick without deep story but it takes a lot of skill to and experience to make a movie work without the use of dialogues all the time. Telling a story by actions and not by words is something that can only be achieved by visual media and this movie did it really well.

And it's by no means dumb, if you watch it properly then you can see the question it's asking. It begins with a quote from Nietzsche a quote which explored during the film. Todays films confuse complexity and subversion with good.

Love Conan, books and this film. Totally agree with Drinker that the minimal dialogue actually helps the pacing and storytelling - it also makes the few speeches Arnold makes have that much more impact especially the " Crush your enemies...." and " Crom I have never prayed to you before..." monologues. Arnold sells them 100%, as did James Earl Jones. What a film - best death has to go to Arnold's close friend, Sven Ole Thorsen ( big hammer guy) who gets impaled on a huge wooden spike.

I think the breaking of the sword and the killing of Thulsa Doom is more powerful in that he has truly--finally--avenged his people. When he raises his sword and his father's after killing Rexor, is like Conan telling his father's spirit: for you, Dad. I thought it was very poignant. Conan using that broken sword to kill Thulsa was him avenging his people. That sword has one final purpose--it will never come back from that catastrophic break, and his people will never return, either. When Conan just drops the blade after pitching Thulsa's head down the temple steps is so perfect. The finality of it--the quest is over. The remnants of his sword means nothing anymore, because it has been used completely. He doesn't need nostalgia. Man--such a great movie!

The way Hollywood has treated John Milius is a crime. Dude may be little bit nuts, but he is one of the best writers tinseltown had, and none of the movies he directed are bad. While Conan the Barbarian, The Wind and the Lion and Red Dawn are pretty well known, Farewell to the King and his last directing job, tv-movie Rough Riders deserve more recognition. When guys like Milius were discarded for affirmative action hires, that's when Hollywood started it's circling to the drain.

Just saw this video pop up and wanted to say that Conan the Barbarian is my all-time favorite movie. It's the genre-defining movie for fantasy and it's just... "right" on so many levels. It has buff heroes, beautiful women, monsters, evil cults, swords, magic, violence, sex/romance, a very direct plot, good production values and special effects (done well before the era of CGI), and one of the best, most epic musical scores ever created. It is blunt, straightforward, and absolutely, unapologetically masculine. Not until Peter Jackson came along and tackled The Lord of the Rings was there anything really like it, and PJ's LOTR while being in the same general genre was of course a much different movie. Anyhow, I enjoy your content and I'm looking forward to what you and Andre have to say about this masterpiece.

You can see she lingers a second longer in concern before she runs out of the scene. Honestly, I'm glad she didn't ruin the take by kneeling to help him. My favourite movie. Great discussion. The whole film is high art in my eyes. With a musical score as good as Conan's I've always viewed the picture as operatic. What is absent via lack of dialogue is more than delivered through Poledouris' music, and then some. The cast, by and large, were chosen for their physical qualities and as a result are aesthetically perfect for their roles. It's the nearest we'll ever get to live action Frank Frazetta. PS. Would love a Happy Hour on John Boorman's Excalibur, another truly great fantasy epic.

the Manliest movie ever!! And a great deep movie, not just an action one. Where the Power come from, the Afterlife, the Ubermann from Nitzche, the great Warrior plus very smart educated leader, the political power of the one called to rule, the majesty of Basilius score, the mockery of the hippie (today SJWs) movement, etc, etc, etc. One of the BEST EVER MADE MOVIES!

Pretty awesome to see all the reviews, all the fans. I watched this as a kid when it first hit HBO in like 82, with my dad. So every year, to honor dads birthday, first week of April, I have my private Conan party. Sometimes I even watch Destroyer...lol Are we ever getting King Conan?

One of the Howard stories that stayed with me the most was one with Conan fighting a betraying ally in ancient ruins, when they're set upon by a giant slug. The final solution to assail this indomitable foe, is for Conan to push a huge masonry wall over onto it. I mean, is there any more toxicly masculine an activity, killing bugs?

EXACTLY! Conan is never enslaved! He never existed in the form Millius portrayed him. Still, I love this movie, but I love the literary Conan sooooo much more. When the latest Conan movie was announced with Jason Momoa I had hopes at first but those were quickly dashed. Maybe someday we will get proper, faithful writing true to Howard's Cimmerian, and a director and production to match. I wouldn't mind a good audiobook treatment of Howard's original works either.

I think that Conan looking at his hand after being resurrected is not about him being unaccustomed to being alive again, but that he is still thinking about Thulsa's words that sword is nothing compared to hand that wields it.

Let's not forget the subtleties of Conan's recovery scene. It's not just him simply re-training with his sword. Notice how the scene starts with him examining his hand. He then wields his sword and performs one of his old forms (as first shown in one of the earlier sword training scenes). He then sheathes his sword and continues to analyze his hand. He is contemplating Thulsa Doom's answer to the Riddle of Steel: "What is steel compared to the hand that wields it?" Thulsa is a master manipulator and has clearly gotten into Conan's head, and yet Conan still moves forward.

Hi guys, regarding the filming locations of conan, it was filmed mostly in eastern parts. I've been to Cuenca, where most of the first part was filmed, which has the biggest pine forest in europe, and where conan met the witch (ciudad encantada). The conversation with his dad may have been added afterwards when the locations weren't available?
