Half a Roof, Wood Stove Installation | Building an Off Grid Log Cabin Alone in the Wilderness, Ep21

This week, I finish boarding the west side of the log cabin roof and waterproof it with ice and water shield. With half of the cabin protected from weather, I hook up the wood stove so I can start cooking inside as the weather cools and I bring in a small antique writing desk where I can edit my videos. Immediately, the cabin starts feeling like home, with a place to sit, look out of the windows and doors at the falling rain and listen to the birds, frogs, wind in the trees. The deep overhang on the front porch of the cabin is ideal at this time of year, protecting me from the rain but high enough to let the sun shine in, which will be much appreciated during the fall, winter and spring when the sun is low in the sky and the south facing wall of the cabin absorbs the heat. Cool mornings and warm days at this time of year means foggy mornings over the lakes, rivers and ponds and the moose are in the ponds eating the last of the succulent water plants before transitioning to a diet of woody browse as summer ends and the rut begins in September.
With fall approaching, I spend more time shooting my bow and arrows at targets and splitting firewood for heat and cooking. Cali, my golden retriever, will appreciate the cooler days as summer winds down and is already becoming more active as the heat subsides.
I'm now working on completing the east side of the roof, which should take two days, and then I can focus on closing in the gable ends, including insulation, and insulating and boarding the breezeway walls and ceiling. The following week, I will install temporary doors and permanent windows, just in time for autumn.

Dear Shawn, after following you for years I have reached the conclusion that it is a pity, or maybe a tragedy that most world leaders who hold us as hostages do not have and never will have your personal qualities. It isn't just building a home or chopping wood. Nothing could be done w/o your special spirit the powerful engine propelling you ahead in life. You are one of the very few individuals that I admire the most. Please take care!

Shawn, I can't believe how time flies, and how much you've filled each minute! Half the roof sealed - so gratifying for you, I'm sure. I see the trees are starting to turn. The dogwoods in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia are starting to turn, too, and the walnut trees are starting to shed their leaves - all weeks earlier than normal. I just keep thinking: winter is coming, winter is coming. But I'm confident you will have everything under cover before the first snow flies. Rooting for you! EDIT: Oh my gosh! When I saw you bring in that wonderful secretary, I just started bawling. It's a HOME!!🪅🪅🪅🪅

How many men and women looking to start a new life in the wilderness of a vast country like Canada would be able to simply have an idea and take it through fruition to a suitable home built out of wood ? Not many I fear but Shawn James has proved it is possible and no matter the weather or conditions, winter and summer, he has persevered and look at him up on a roof making it water tight against the coming elements. This man is to be applauded in my opinion as how man others would do what he has shown, day in day out and all with the company of his dog Cali? Cheers Mate for showing us how, a dream can be achieved.

I’m also more drawn to your channel (I have “subscribed & rang that bell” since the beginning) especially since Emily was introduced. I love the teaching modalities as a father/daughter and from daughter to father. I support Emily’s channel, along with her capable carpentry’s, blissful nature attitude with easy going well-rounded outdoor activities, variety of cooking styles, ability to help her family, willingness to learn new things, eagerness to live with nature and best of all…live near and help her family! Your family is similar to how I was brought up and how my husband and I have raised our four children. Although each of us have jobs in the city; we return to our roots and enjoy our love for the rural, country life- which includes our natural environment of fishing, hiking, boating, Kayaking, walking, gardening, biking, cooking outside on the grill…being one with nature and just being side by side with your family. So glad you did a recap to emphasize how much work has been done so far. Why is putting a roof up so homey and satisfying? It's such a great time of the build for seeing backwards and forwards. Love the secretary for multi-functional use.

Close to harvest time. My Pear tree is full of rope pears an been processing for canning jars and freezing, beets, green beans, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, pumpkin's are all waiting to be processed. Our Lord sure has blessed us with all these great foods to injoy like you Shawn, you and your family will have abundance of food to put away to injoy during this winter and spring. I think all of us who've watched for so long have wanted to see that roof go up more than anything. You'd think it was ours, lol. Can't imagine how proud your family is of you. Few things are respected & admired as hard work, and you're a testament to that. Have you ever considered getting a dolly? Seems like you'd have plenty of use for it. Sure surprised to see the desk so close to the stove! Great job" sounds so inadequate.

All I can say is WOW and WOW again!!!! Makes one understand why pioneers built small cabins. Had to do it themselves and it had to be done fast. Have been enjoying watching all the building of this one and the stuff before. Your wife is truly blessed as are your girls. Prayers for safety while up on the roof. Thanks for sharing this amazing journey. God bless and protect.
