Gypsy Wagon 13 - Fixtures And Features
Ойын-сауық
G'day Folks. Closing out the year with this episode. I concentrate once again on the outside, adding various fixtures and features, again using one-off items in a repurposed manner and seeing if they work. So far I'm happy with the results.
Stay well, take care, and I hope everyone has a relaxing, peaceful and enjoyable Xmas holiday period. See you in the new year!
Cheers,
Mark.

I have been just fascinated with this project. The romance of a Gypsy wagon in detail is one thing, but to see it all come together and with such a relaxed, casual approach has just been a pleasure. Thanks for putting this out there for us all.

Glad you're enjoying it Astro 🙂
This is really coming together well. You have done an amazing job capturing the essence of the traditional vardo. Your choice and application of recycled materials is spot-on, and your craftsmanship and problem-solving are a joy to watch. Keep it coming!

Thanks Jeff. The recycling and repurposing is probably my favourite part. It's great when a light bulb goes off and suddenly you see a new use for something. 🙂

@Jeff Hinrichs Ready to go 🙂 probably among the last things to be fitted when the time comes.
The schools I went to in Pennsylvania, USA had very similar desks. Your entire project is so beautiful and I think your spontaneity is what's making it much more eclectic and like a true Gypsy wagon.

Looks great, love the window screens. That was brilliant. Glad to see I'm not the only one that builds from the brain.

Really coming together there . An idea for the shutters would be using a sliding barn doors. A track both top and bottom would be the most secure way. At least I think so. That carryall on the back end was a big surprise to me. Had me baffled till you actually told me. Great Job, giving lots of inspiration. For my slide on caravan. I'll be using a utility trailer for mine though.

I did consider doing that with the shutters, did spend a bit of time trying to locate items to do it with, but wasn't having any luck. So I've just left it open to possibly do it later down the track. All the best with your own project. Let the imagination run wild 🙂
Was blown away by the benches! I didn't see that potential. You truly have a creative mind. I thought all of the add-ons were great 👍

Thanks Roger. Wrecking the desk paid off I think. 🙂
i sure have enjoyed watching this build
I came for the butcher's block restoration but liked your videos so much I decided to watch the rest. I've just made it through all the wagon videos and I must say that's some really fine work. I appreciate your laid back demeanor. So often the presenter is talking so fast I'm amazed they don't pass out. It's nice to see the relaxed approach.

Thank you Texas. ...I was born laid back I think 😀
Yes I sat at school at the same dubble school desk. In The Netherlands. In the 60’s. This gypsy wagon looks AWESOME. ❤
I have so enjoyed watching this come together. I can't wait to see what it looks like with lights installed and all lit up at night. I fully expect to be watching you painting sky blue balustrades in the next video. :)

Ugh! What a task...the idea is not entirely dismissed as yet but ugh! what a task. Yes, I can't wait for the night shots.
You should be thinking of training a couple of those cows to learn to pull that wagon. A team of Steers would make a good yoke of Oxen and it would really make it authentic.

Brilliant project make, its been a pleasure watching it ... put a smile on my face. Wonderful property too. Maybe when/if my health improves enough I can aim for some property and make a Vardo myself; retire happy.

I think it looks great, on the outside. Haven't seen the inside yet.
The old style school desk with the ink well was used state side, but retired and replaced long ago. They're still used by some homeschoolers and antiques collectors usually have one or two kicking around. They're becoming a little harder to find these days though.

I didn't think they were unique only to Australia. Like most things of older times, even the humble school desk had style and grace.

I like the white balustrades. If anything, I was thinking while watching you instal the end window fascia that I'd probably add a white detail on the sill and surround between the green fascia and the green window to break it up a bit. It's your creation and you'll do it the way you want to, but it sounds like the next project might happen first!

Well when I say there's still plenty more to do on the outside...there's going to be some more finer detail to come, painting wise. I'm not exactly sure if I actually have any skill for it...I may have to contract a professional! 🙂
It is starting to look really marvelous. I will be starting mine in the spring. For now it is buried in Canadian snow and minus 20 C temps.

Franklin- did you buy a used one that you are going to restore? I live in BC and we're thinking about building one from scratch but am wondering where to find a used one because restoration might be better in the long run.
@FranklinNewhart

@@cindybrandner3063 I am actually using an old farm wagon that has rubber tires and a floor base of 8 X 16 so it has lots of room inside. I am spending the winter doing design work on it. I will be pulling it with my antique 1967 Chev 3/4 ton. It can only be trailed up to 40 MPH as after that it begins to sway. It will be making the rounds on a cruise car circuit as we also have a 49 Studebaker Champion and a 1971 CB 350 Honda bike. A caravan will look good in our lineup at the shows. Since we live in Saskatchewan I am thinking of doing a Snake Oil Sales theme. Maybe some Rain Making too.

I am also considering starting a You Tube Channel to show off my progress but if I don't then it will be done on Facebook. You can find me there with a bunch of my other unfinished projects along with a few I did finish.
How is inside?.
Looking through the past content, and I know it is irrelevant, but I wonder, what do you estimate the weight of this beastie is? I know it's never going to be pulled by anything without wheels, (or treads!), and an engine, I'm just curious...
@RedPathRambler
Жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm very curious about that as well Jeff. A totally uneducated guess I think somewhere between 1 and 2 tonne. I would like to, if I can, get it to a weigh station. I don't think I have too much more weight to add to it. And now the idea of separating it from the cart base to be placed on a trailer so it can be mobile on the road has entered my mind.
@jeffhinrichs2993
Жыл бұрын
Making her mobile is a brilliant idea!. It doesn't look like width is an issue, you would just have to devise a method of transfer from cart base to trailer that can be done with 1 man and doesn't risk damage to the vardo, once aboard the trailer, tie down should be no worry. As far as the weighing her, do you have a mate that could get his hands on a portable axle scale for an afternoon?
@RedPathRambler
Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking a lift/stand system that people use with campers on the back of utes, where you drive away and out of it leaving it free standing there. Back an appropriate trailer under it and wind her down. Not sure about a portable axle scale, my brother might know someone. Interesting venture to explore though.
@jeffhinrichs2993
Жыл бұрын
@@RedPathRambler Sure. a hydraulic jack on each corner would work, they would have to be pretty stout. That would mean moving the cart chassis out of the way so you could get the trailer under her. Jacks would kind of screw up the aesthetic though. Sure be a shame to spoil those beautiful lines, especially the perfectly elegant angle on your side walls. That said, it would be an interesting avenue to explore, and I have no doubt that you could come up with a creative and unexpected solution.
