BUILD IT: The Star-gazer Micro Camper

This is a great project for beginner builders. If you've ever wanted to build your own "something", this is a great place to start! I will take you from beginning to end and when you're done you'll have a backyard camper, or mobile greenhouse, or forest office of your VERY OWN built by your OWN HANDS!
This cost me around $1K to build as you see it. You can save nearly $250 if you build this in place and don't add the wheels and axle. Build on blocks instead. It's up to you!
Materials:
2) 2x4x12 (building hitch, will be laminated and cut to 2.5 x 2.5 x 10'6"))
5) 2x4x10 (rafters and the 2 side beams that extend beyond the back)
4) 2x4x8 (for underside support and bench support)
6) 2x2x8 (inside trim for stabilizing/attaching walls)
1) 3/4 inch sheet plywood
5) 1/2 inch sheet plywood
10 small rafter ties
1) 7/8 inch ball hitch coupler
2) 3/8 inch x 4 inch bolts with nuts (or whatever is needed for your hitch)
1) 3/4 inch x 5 ft. threaded rod (I got mine at Menards)
4) heavy 3/4 inch washers (for wheels)
2) 3/4 inch coarse thread nuts (for wheels)
1) port window (10 inch) amzn.to/420HURi
1) Arched shed window (18x36) amzn.to/3MRyXpr
2) 26 in. Heavy duty cart wheels (Lappwagons.com)
5) 12' clear polycarbonate panels
1) 1 lb. bag 2" MultiLite screws (for polycarbonate panels)
2) Aluminum Termination bars, 12 ft.
1) 1x18"x6' edge glued pine board
9) corner brackets (6 for table legs, 3 for attaching to wall)
1) tube construction adhesive
1) tube silicone (for sealing cracks/waterproofing camper)
2) Paper Redi-shades 36 x 72
4) Rolls Gorilla outdoor double sided mounting tape (60 inches each)
2) Lightweight door hinges
2) Door pulls (inside/outside)
2) Barrel locks or locks of your choice (inside/outside)
1) 1 gallon stain/paint
1) Twin memory foam mattress, cut to fit bench
2) yards fleece (cut to size to cover foam mattress)
MISC: various sizes of screws, paint supplies, rope trim, window trim, finishing supplies as desired.
Tools Used in this build: Cordless drill, oscillating multi-tool, table saw, jigsaw, band saw (could use hacksaw), circular saw, clamps.

Woman.... you never cease to amaze me, but more importantly, inspire me! I'm older, and we sold our farm, but I just bought 4 acres of woods, (just for a camp-out spot) and am helping build things for the first time at 63!

This is NOT designed to be pulled behind a vehicle. I pulled it on gravel roads and went very slow with my ATV for testing. If you wanted to transport it somewhere you could load it onto a flatbed utility trailer and take it there for delivery. This is simply meant to be MOBILE- in that you can move it around as you wish. This is meant as a backyard camper or let your imagination run wild- greenhouse, office, spare guest room, mobile chicken coop, etc. OR build it without the wheels on a permanent foundation (blocks)! Park it in the SHADE so you don't get cooked! Haha But shoulder season- that solar effect is going to feel GREAT! I hope to see lots of these built!!

I totally understand when our pups get to an age where they are just not as active anymore. I have a 14.5-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Oliver, who we have recently brought to the vet to find out that he hasn't been feeling himself because he has such pain in his back and knees. Put him on some good pain relief along with other meds for his ears and he is like a new dog. Not like he is going to run a marathon but he is so much happier and a pep in his step has certainly been more evident. I subscribed to your son's channel and I am so looking forward to his adventures.

Wow, what an awesome build !!! Just three little things I would adjust - first, secure the nuts that hold the wheels, otherwise one of them will loosen up (Oldtimers used left and right threads on their wagons), just drill a small hole through the rod and feed in some stainless steel wire - second, use plain PC-sheets to get a perfect star-gazer-look-through, helps reducing the weight a bit too - and third, put two extra strips of aluminium right above the end walls. Using small screws into the end walls (e.g. 2,5mmx25mm), you could omit the ugly blocks. Using washers and some silicone will waterproof it as well as the special roofing screws (don't forget to drill a bigger hole through the PC for thermal movement). Have a lot of fun with your star-gazer

A tip when ripping long materials like that 2x10s on a table saw is to cut about half way and then turn the wood on end and cut from the other side so when the cuts connect, the wood is supported in the middle where the cuts meet. Works well when you don't have an outfeed table

This could be an amazing base for a e-bike camper by replacing the side walls with xps foam covered with canvas and using a torsion box floar shaving of half the weight....Love this. 🤩

The "hitch" is called the tongue, the part you bolted on is called a coupler, and an axle mounts side to side .. Repurposed set of street motorsickle wheels and tires, some taillights, clearance lights, wiring, and safety chains and one could tow it on road at lower speeds...

It's so great to watch you making another shelter from one of Deek's books. I greatly enjoyed the videos you made for the a-frame build. This one is really fun and I love the extra aesthetic touches with the stencils. Not just practical but pretty, too.

Consider using Nyloc nuts on (or double-nutting) the axle bolts, to stop them from coming undone (almost inevitable on at least the left side axle-nut)...

Watching you finagle those axles and wheels took me back to when I was a kid and we'd build these home made "cars" we called buggies. A 2 x 12, a couple of 3 foot 2 x 4's to attach old baby carriage axles and wheels to we scrounged from the dump. A carriage bolt through the front axle assembly and 2 x 12 so you could steer it by pushing on one side or the other of the front 2 x 4 with your feet. Then race them down the long hill near our house. It's a wonder one of us wasn't killed. At the bottom of the hill was a T intersection with a fieldstone wall, and of course there were no brakes. 🙄
