John started wearing the headphones mainly for hearing protection. He found that during rehearsals for the 2021 tour and the first few shows he was getting significant ringing in his ears afterwards so he started wearing the headphones to mitigate that. He said in addition to that he liked wearing the headphones because of how well he could hear himself and the band which allowed him to be more dynamic and expressive with his playing.

I soooo appreciate you Michael. The guitar knowledge and passion you bring but equally as powerful for me is the heart you bring to these videos. I can feel the love you have for music, and also the struggles you have been through, and to me that’s what music is all about - sharing the human condition. One video really stood out to me in that regard, I believe it’s Brokedown Palace. Anyway, I know you have a lot of admirers. Count me among them. Peace and love brother!

As always, Nice commentary, good analysis. The remaining band members from the original lineup did well in choosing John to fill those enormous shoes. John, during his tenure has most certainly put in his time listening to what his predecessor was doing. John has also done an outstanding job recognizing and incorporating what has come before and giving a gracious and courteous nod toJerry while still being able to incorporate is own sensibilities. John is walking a fine line and doing it with the grace and awareness of who he is playing with and who he is playing to. Also, interesting commentary on hunting 3rd’s, you did a vid analysis’ on a live GD song, I can’t remember if it was a sugaree, but you were pointing out how Jerry was hunting 4th’s. I guessing the song and how the player is interpreting it in the moment and what key it is in can influence what one may be hunting for at any given time. Jerry also had a tendency to weave an dance around the root more and land on it only when you ear was begging to hear it.

After a few of minutes I started to find a scale, not sure which, and several little riffs that sounded similar to John's. I can't play fast so this kind of lesson helps me find simple, melodic phrases to repeat, hopefully increasing my speed over time. It is amazing how great just using the first three strings and frets 8-13 can sound when touching on the melody and following the groove. Thanks for the useful inspiring videos.

Idk what round means lmao. But to me mayer sounds mire bluesy, and jerry sounds more busy/jazzy. But mayer does an amazing job of doing a jerry like tribute to jerry but while making it his own and adding his touches. This is the blueprint for what I am trying to become as an improviser. You’ve helped more than you know, brother. You and stitch method are the best guitar teachers on youtube for rather than teaching people to memorize stuff note by note you show us how to get that kind of sound while still being original. That’s true musicality. Now I just can’t play things the same way every day. I’m gonna drive a band crazy 😂

I’m a PT in Asheville. Most tendon injuries are due to overloading. Biking and running is a lot on the patellar tendon. Foam rolling quads and anterior tibialis can help. Hip strengthening is usually good. Loosen up the ankle for Dorsiflexion. Proper loading of the quad is key. And cross training is the most important thing you can do for movement health. Strength training is most important. #CantGoWrongGettingStrong But I’d seriously recommend finding a good local PT to help work on your individual impairments and keep you healthy as you age. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

He is probably wearing headphones for his monitor mix instead of in ears which can be ambient and some people want but some only want to hear what they want to hear. He can still hear the audience because they put mics up so they can send the crowd reaction into peoples in ears or headsets. Once again not every one wants to hear that. Some performers can walk onstage and do everything they are supposed to and hear the crowd or NOT because they simply have to ask to hear the audience mics in their ears. Nobody would pipe that crowd noise back into a floor monitor.
