Sugaree is a song I decided to study to learn Mixolydian. Still working on it. This is great. Thanks.

I would add, and wish I’d known earlier…. anyway, one of the most eloquent all-around Sugaree’s is 2/27/90, Mardi Grad night. The first solo is just establishing groove. The second solo has a great build up, first with Jerry comping the B-3, followed by a peaky solo, and the third solo is a very pure lullaby all the way to the quietest quality before a perfect conclusion. It’s a spectacular rendition worthy of study.

Some say that “the Cornell” of Sugareee is 3/1/80 jgb. Love watching you doing dead. So glad you got to go to Cornell. What a great show and experience it must have been. …. Turn it up!

Been playing for 35 years. About 10 years into that is when the lightbulb went off and I finally understood why triads are SO important to guitar players and understanding tones and melodies. So much “frustration” goes right out the window when you understand this. Great deep dive, one of their absolute best songs of their entire catalogue. 👍🏻🫶🏼⚡️💀⚡️🌈

I learned so much from this deep dive. I'm connecting the dots via your explanations. I even got to finish a few of your sentences with you. That is a MAJOR step for my understanding. Like I said before, it's all apiece of cake applying to my sax knowledge..I just know where to go. Guitar has been a challenge. Coltrane lives!

Right 👍 remember that the way to listen to this music is to try to hear the interplay of all the instruments at once.when a solo gets to much above the song it's kind of an unintentional thing, what they, and others, meant to do is to serve the song 🎸😁🐱

What makes this so special for me is being able to watch someone so knowledgeable work things out. And yet as you hit parts you didn't fully get, I could see you at GIT IIRC with an imaginary teacher standing behind you, as you fought to figure it out. It's the mystery of guitar. Definitely this video will get repeated viewings. It's like drinking Cognac. Each ship's worth savoring. Thanks again.

the thing that pushes that 12/30/89 Sugaree so high is the addition of Airto Moriera into the percussion section, as well as Phil’s new bass that really gave that new years run a powerful edge.

Way to go the guy who told him to change to a low quality unwatchable show- when the second solo in winterland is the best part and we didn’t even get there lol. Dude I need to see you break down the second solo from Winterland. That first 4 bars of that second solo is world breaking. The one that starts around 3:18 into the sugaree winterland 74 video. That opening lick hits my emotional G spot 😂

"Sugaree" is a song with lyrics by long-time Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and music by guitarist Jerry Garcia.[1] It was written for Jerry Garcia's first solo album Garcia, which was released in January 1972. As with the songs on the rest of the album, Garcia plays every instrument himself except drums, played by Bill Kreutzmann

It’s all good. Jerry is, well, Jerry. But don’t want to live in a world where people like Mayer aren’t keeping it alive. And the fact such a gifted player has devoted so much energy to this music is the highest praise. IMHO.
