SPOILER for my favorite Drax moment. Not a funny part, rather a touching one. It's when he and Mantis are sitting by a pool of water and he tells Mantis that the scene reminds him about the time he spent with his daughter. Then, as Drax is sitting there with a gentle smile on his face, Mantis reaches out and touches his shoulder to share his emotions and she starts to cry. It really got to me.

N Slater That wasn't remotely emotional. The movie was very boringly straightforward.

True. But the same scene if directed properly wouldve been emotional. There was no buildup. She touched and cried almost suddenly.

Ego was the type of villain who reassures you the wrong way... He slowly but surely turns more and more unsettling throughout the movie and that what makes him such a fresh MCU villain. I love it!

  • @Interestingenough4

Yeah, that's what I liked about him. I also like how he was such a cold-hearted sociopath who fully believed he was right and everyone in his path was collateral damage, yet he struggled with his own basic sense of humanity. Essentially, Ego represented everything Star Lord himself was capable of becoming had he chosen to find meaning for himself outside of heroism.

What about the scene with Drax talks to Mantis about his daughter? That was great development for him! It show us how much he misses his daughter, which also makes us feel that hatred for Ronan he felt in #1

The gold people only show up en-mass like twice. Not a big deal to me. Both times were warranted. And it was a bit dishonest to call them bad villains when they aren't even the main villains. I suppose it is a bit awkward though, since the main villains of the film are a secret.

not a fan of the washed out look and it makes it bland like the British weather (Grey and dull). Washed out colours doesn't necessary make it more realistic. Hell Drive is considered to be a realistic art house movie and that had more colour than Civil War

For me this movie has more/better action than the first one, and although the Sovereign didn't have much to do, the sequences where they were fighting in space looked absolutely spectacular, with great visuals and amazing sound design. And the final battle was a visual splendor. I really enjoy this movie.

I think that was kind of the point with the gold people. The Sovereign and the High Priestess Ayesha were a bunch of snobbish, pompous xenophobes, which made us sympathize less with them when Rocket stole a few of the batteries. That said, I agree that Ego was well characterized. He may not have been a top-level icon when it comes to superhero movie villains, but he was the right one for this movie, and he didn't feel like someone just thrown in to give the heroes someone to punch. He was by far the most legitimately dangerous villain of the MCU so far, and was a cold-hearted sociopath who believed he was right and viewed everyone in his way as just collateral damage. Also, how much more personal and emotional does it get when he killed Star-Lord's mom just to suppress his sense of humanity, which scarred Star-Lord for life?

  • @tovolume

    @tovolume

Ego is the sickest villain ever, there was one scene where he showed the Guardians of all the different female species he met to impregnate them and they showed a little underage alien pink girl which shows Ego going to the extremes by means necessary to complete his mission. It's surprising to me, but what's more surprising no one made a controversy or pointed this scene out

I loved this film. The first scene where the camera follows and focuses on baby Groot dancin' his little heart out in the foreground whilst the rest of the team battles this hideous alien(which was animated super well) behind him is genious. The upbeat, comedic space fight really set the mood for the film, and immediately gave me nostalgia from the first one. Particularly, I am such a big fan of the use of 60s to 80s music in this context! It is a MARVELous match with the whole comedic space thing going on, and helps create that iconic blend that is Guardians of the Galaxy. On that same note, baby Groot is such a strong supporting character, and I don't think this film would have been the sequel it was without him--I definitely think it would have fallen short of the first film. Or it would've been sorta like how the making of new Hangover films were--although thery're good on their own, they don't bring anything new to the table. And as we know, everytime you recycle a concept or joke, its effect definitely diminishes. Anyways, baby Groot helped keep vol. 2 feel fresh and inspired. And some of Groot's scenes were definitely a few of the most memorable (when he trudges super slowly and with a heavy head towards the prison cell, or runs off joyously with the bomb). Being the adorable critter he was, I reckon Marvel will be selling a lot of Groot plushies and other merchandise! Just a quick mention of Drax as well--great character, absoultely love his impeccable comedic timing and contagious laugh. Great scriptwork! I do believe that the jokes in this movie aren't all on point, but of course, with so many swings there are bound to be misses. The film shows right from the get-go, however, that it doesn't take itself seriously, and so it gets away with things like Starlord turning into a giant Pacman to combat his father. That leads me to my next point, I feel like the film took on a very risky premise--particularly through the antagonist. The whole end-of-the world, almighty-celestial-being-with-insane-Godly-powers often becomes so farfetched and convoluted that it takes away from any depth achieved by the original storyline. Even in sci-fi and fantasy films people expect some sort of consistency and causality (like with laws of physics), things should be believable within the realm of that universe. This is important as well to be able to ground the experience and let people relate to the characters. I have lost interest in countless Marvel movies which start great but then all disintegrate into mayhem --usually with some generic portal or other danger which hovers over a major city. This movie played it smart by sort of getting to the main villain towards the end, and tackling it rather smootly and not dragging it out to the point where everything is so over the top that it puts you off. Another observation I made is the "purpose" Ego found, which is indirectly just the innate biological purpose of all life--that is to reproduce--or spread--and thus survive (speaking of which, I love how this concept is used in the movie "Life" as well). It ironically gives him a very mortal and even simple persona, despite being a celestial. If it wasn't for his heightened state of being, and obvious capacity to feel emotion and thus make ethical choices, he could perhaps not be branded as evil any more than Calvin (the alien in Life) Finally, despite the role of humor in the film, it does touch upon some darker topics. Most burnt into my brain was the Garona and...Nebula(?) upbringing. How Garona would insist on winning despite knowing--though perhaps not realizing the psychological impact of--her sister being replaced with robot parts. That's pretty messed up. Or how Peter's dad would "spread his seeds" and then kill his children that did not possess the right gene, and how he put the tumour in Peter's mother. Or the pain Drax is going through on a daily basis (as indicated by the antennae girl)--sidenote: it's great that such a sad man has the capacity to otherwise feel so much joy. This darkness is a nice counterweight, helping to balance the film's lighter tone and perhaps prevent it from becoming too flimsy and whimsical. It also adds to the depth of the characters and storyline, and aids in giving that "complete cinema experience". Wow, this turned out into an essay more so than a rant! I hope someone reads this :3 ...and I apologize if I was all over the place and my thoughts lacked structure! toodles

This is my new favourite Marvel movie. I can't remember any blockbuster that felt this creative or fresh - not even the first one. I loved every piece of dialog, every shot, every cool little character moment, every big action scene, every joke. The flow was perfect. I laughed out loud so many times. All of the actors, even the side characters, were given so much gold. And the way Gunn incorporates all of those classic songs into those scenes of his - wow!! The ending literally had me laughing and crying at the same time. That's a very impressive feat for a comic book adaptation. I don't think any second of this movie was wasted. Gunn showed here that you can actually make a massive blockbuster and still create a true piece of art at the same time. I'll take this over trash like Pacific Rim any day, any night. This is an actual 10/10 for me. A perfect ride. Oh, and that chick was so goddamn cute! Dammit.

God damn, I felt this movie had a bit more tragedy than it should have. The comedic timing was perfect for me. Pac man hahah!! When he finds out his mom died because his dad killed her was a great scene. I bought that scene, especially when he impulsively tried to kill his own dad. You can tell he loved his mother. When Drax reminisces about his daughter and Mantis shared the emotion and she starts to cry. God damn I broke down. I actually broke down at every scene when Drax got emotional with Mantis. Baby Groot!!

  • @Lynchotype

I would barley call Jeremy's "reviews" reviews. They're not put across very coherently and never go in depth with anything, they're just very basic. I think Chris has his problems too but his far better than most on youtube. When Doug Walker isn't doing his comedy sticks and is just giving a straightforward review he's pretty great and Mark Kermode who is a huge name who has many of his reviews on KZread.

no I don't think you understand, you swear like I'm saying terrible things about Jeremy. Chris breaks down everything to a point where his review seemed to be more balanced. Just because I appreciate Chris's reviews more doesn't mean I wont respect Jeremy's review. Plus Chris has a far better grading system so that lets viewers compare his other reviews with ease. Chris is more technical plane and simple and that's what I prefer but I still watch every Jeremy Jahns video and his talks on collider movie talk. Quit getting butt hurt.

Sorry Dylan, but the only thing Chris breaks down and evaluates his movies on are the characters. In every single review the only way he likes or dislikes a movie is by the characters. Not anything else. Not the tone, not the visuals, not the execution, etc.. Just the characters. Honestly anyone can make a better review than Chris Stuckmann.

This is why i love being subscribed to both Chris and Jeremy. Its cause while i agree with most of their reviews. The few times they dont have similar opinions can still have hope to see who i side more in my opinion and helps me not give up on a movie that i could have loved; ( and at this point i think i usually agree with this channel more). The confusion between these two conflicting opinions did lower my expectations a bit and after watching the movie i almost fully agree with Chris. This movie was great in my opinion and i loved it even more then the first. I loved the action, comedy, visuals and world building in this but the greatest part was how much character development most of the characters got (Drax was probably the only one who didnt get much development cause maybe the first movie dove into his past enough for us for now and they were probably trying to make him move on more in this one maybe). Anyway all the development really gave you more understanding of most of them and made you care more about what they go through or been through. I dont think this movie was perfect and it did have some issues but it still was great in the majority. So yea even though i know reviews are subjective, im glad for this review cause i feel it does convey the truth of the movie more in my opinion them jeremys. His felt misleading and with over expectations. Anyway im done with the comparisons and great review.

This is one of the few reviews to get it right when it comes to the character building. So many reviews have knocked it for not being like the first, and its sad to see fans would rather see stunted cartoons than actual fleshed out characters they can relate to.

I actually ended up preferring this one. It's more memorable, colourful thanks to not having same colour grading as most Marvel movies, baby Groot is actually perfection (just first scene with him was worth price of ticket)... (Spoilers) the gold people aren't the real villians here but just funny, Kurt Russel I loved because you could see that he supressed his love because of the centuries he has been alive as a celestial being, and you can see his logic and he is genuinely sad at the end. The lack of big mcguffin hunt kind of is quite nice tbh.

lmao original Guardians weren't guns for hire. Neither was the Star-Lord/Rocket post Annihilation team. Now they're just jolly 'ol bounty hunters looking for a good time.
