I loveddd the action scenes. Very raw and brutal. Not screwing around trying to look pretty. You could tell these characters legitimately wanted to kill each other. Every punch was intended to connect, which is what you would think a movie would try to do... but wow do a lot of movies just try and make it look cool and it ends up being just flashy with no substance.

Well except for the fact that Steve Rogers is basically the opposite of James Bond's character. Along with his friendship with Bucky and the final interaction. It is James Bond like with this being a last second save when Steve puts the chip in, but the difference is that that actually isn't the climax or the most powerful part. Saving the world wasnt the climax, saving Bucky was the climax and Cap was only fighting him because if he didn't, millions would die.

I loved the first Cap movie, it made me fall in love with the character and we got to see him before the powers. But what I love the most about the second one is that is shows what the serum can actually do. I hate when people say Cap is a useless Avenger, but he's not. Avengers even failed to shows what Cap is able to do.

If you look into it more Captain America can actually be considered the most powerful Avenger. He is of such good heart and is so loyal that he can actually lift Thor's hammer and has been proven he could have a decent fight with Hulk. He is just underlooked by people who have only seen the movies and not read the comics.

Winter Soldier, in my opinion, is by far and away the best movie Marvel has made. Iron-Man comes close but Winter Soldier just takes it for me. So far, for me, it's been the only movie to break the Marvel mould, to go somewhere different in terms of plot and characterisation. The first Marvel film since the first Iron-Man to invite thoughtful discussion, debate of morals, interesting places for the characters to go. In both Captain America and Black Widow (in my opinion this was kind of her movie too). The film isn't flawless but it's pretty bloody good.

Few things I consider memorable was: 1) In the conversation between Captain America and Nick Fury, the Captain basically says "the government will concentrate too much power in the name of security, which lead to the destruction of liberty." 2) in the computer scene, what the villain says is true: when tyrants try to take freedom by force or violence, the people will resist. But if you use deception and fear, infiltrate and gradually change the country's institutions, the people will be convinced to give up their liberties and surrender to tyranny." Those things I remember most in this film.

Only, Hydra is a thing to be feared. And they ended up trying to destroy the world through force. The deception is growing under Shields nose. But at the end of the day they use force to attempt to destroy millions. Since they are using such force, is Shield wrong to concentrate power in the name of security? That's not a baseless security threat, that's a real one. that would have led to the death of millions. Which is why i find superhero movies the be the completely wrong vehicles to relay that message. Because the threat the heros face is not an imagined one but one that is epic. Cap needed Shield's equipment to even take on Hydra. So, now there is no more Shield. What happens the next time Hydra comes into town. what's caps argument going to be this time when he's trying to stop a nuclear bombfrom going off that will kill 6 million people. It might be nice to have some Shield gadgets to assist. Hydra is not going to scale back simply because Shield is no more.

Of course Winter Soldier set Agents of SHIELD into high gear story wise and it hasn't stopped since.

I loved this movie and would have to agree with you that it surpasses the first Iron Man. Firstly, the acting was great across the board. I particularly liked Robert Redford as Pierce, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky/The Winter Soldier. Also, I loved the sort of bromance-style chemistry between Natasha and CPT. Rogers. The fight choreography in the film was outstanding, as was the camera work and the direction. All in all, a really solid movie.

His presence will still be felt, to the point where possibly, in The Avengers 2, you'll wonder what happened to him. And movies that make the villains memorable get a high rank on my list.

+Vishv Rangi I just never bought into the Batman trilogy. I know it gets fawning, reverential reviews, but those seem to have more to do with it being the rare DC movie that wasn't campy and ridiculous, and I also doubt it would be spoken of with such respect had Ledger not taken an Oscar-winning turn as The Joker in the one film. I'm not saying that there's an enormous amount of depth to the Marvel characters, but Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are as dull as dish water, and no amount of tragic origin story really seems to overcome that. Tough to build around characters who can be played by pretty much anyone who fits into the suit and can rasp up his voice a little.

J39 Well I had no idea Ledger had died and I still thought the movie was the best comic book film I'd ever seen. Winter Soldier has a ton of cheese dude. Lets not get carried away... the Hydra scientist living in a computer, the talks about dating girls right before Cap jumps out of the airplane, the "on your right". I agree Dark Knight is a bit cheesy at times too, but that's comic book movies for you. I do think Iron Man 1, Cap 2, and the Dark Knight Trilogy kept it to a minimum, which is why I think they're amazing movies. I just can't set aside the fact that I came out of the Dark Knight immediately wanting to see it again, while with Cap 2, I just wanna see what happens next.

I loved how Baron Von Strucker was shown in the Twins scene. It makes me think that his Hydra faction and Zola's Hydra Faction will be at odds with each other sometime soon. I also think that Zola's computer consciousness was included because it will somehow factor in with Ultron in Avengers 2. If Zola has taken over the entire computer network of S.H.I.E.L.D., that means he has access to Tony's computers in Avengers Tower by proxy. Zola has to return in some way, and I think that including him here, while random for the style of the film, puts him into peoples' subconscious so that when he re-appears in Age of Ultron, it won't be too much of a stretch to explain it. On another note, the effects on Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch looked badass, especially the after-effects of Quicksilver's running! I could totally tell it was shot by Joss Wheadon; he has that filmmaking style that is very unique. I can't wait to purchase this film!

I think the reason Zola was put into the movie was to set up the fact that he(it?) will be involved with Ultron in Avengers 2. The Avengers 2 teaser had an Iron Man mask turn into Ultron's head, implying that Tony Stark creates him. This makes sense since he technically retired at the end of IM3 and could be looking for a way to automate the iron man suits completely. Zola could then take over Ultron and voila, we have our villain. Also, Cap will almost certainly die soon, Evans' contract ends after Avengers 3, and they introduced Crossbones and Agent 13 in this film, who kill Cap in the comics, and then Bucky takes over. They made a point of showing Crossbones being pulled out of the wreckage so I think he's alive. So many possibilities, it really is riveting. Also, Agents of SHIELD is now integrated with the plot. Literally, one episode precedes cap 2 and the next one is the direct aftermath of it. It was a pretty bad show at the beginning but it's really stepping it up now. IF you want to see the impact of the movie, catch up. It'll suck at times but you can do it.

This means that any time civilians get airstriked, as collateral damage, scenes from movies get airstriked, or sports get airstriked, or the 60's decade.. It means that when family trips get experienced, or day trips out, actually what's getting experienced is lecture sessions, or funerals.. It means that where and when a house gets refurbished, somebody is winning an Oscar.. Why do I say all this? Because once people publicly know they're all everything, all that'll exist after that is nothing.

No, they don't. Most have a 6 picture deal. The only ones with 9 are Samuel L. Jackson and Sebastian Stan...in fact, I think RDJ had a 4 picture contract before they renewed it about a year ago. So Chris Evans only has 3 movies left in its contract, then he'll take a break from acting to focus on directing. Wonder what's gonna happen with Thor? Chris Hemsworth is still pretty young and I doubt he's tired of making Thor movies...maybe he'll be the first Marvel actor to make a third sequel (Thor 4)?

The scene with Arnim Zola was one of my favorites. I agree that it was much more science fiction-y than the rest of the movie, but I thought it was very creepy and cool. Having Zola be the one to reveal that Hydra has infiltrated SHIELD helped make the Hydra in this movie feel like the same organization from the first film. Also, his thick german accent and Nazi background was just much more sinister in a modern setting.

About the scene with Zola, I don't feel it was extraneous at all. I feel that it was part of the narrative of the story. What Zola was supposed to do is stall Steve and Natasha in order for Rumlow to get there. The whole thing was a lure to get Steve and Nat someplace where they could be killed sight unseen. When you look at the scene later after the whole Causeway attack, when Steve surrenders, Rumlow has to say, "Not here. Not here." Which means if they kill Captain America on national television, that would a PR nightmare. the whole thing of getting Cap to where Zola is, was to make sure they could kill him and not have to answer to anyone. However, Cap thwarted that attempt and ended up back at Sam's place where they were able to plot against Sitwell and Hydra. The other necessity for the part was to give an encapsulated timeline for the watcher to get to know where we were in terms of the time and what happened after Steve went into the ice in TFA. We also learned earlier about Project Insight and what it was going to be used for, but then the scene with Zola ties into the algorithm and what Zola was tasked to do after Project Paperclip saw the way clear to allow Nazis/Hydra agents into the United States. That scene I feel is very integral to the latter part of the film when the Helicarriers begin their targeting sequence. Learning about the algorithm and what Hydra planned to do with it was chilling. I really don't think McFeeley and Marcus would have put the scene in there if it wasn't important enough for the watcher to remember it. This film was so streamlined in both its execution and intent that a scene like that one would have been there for the purpose it was created for. That's my take on it.

  • @OdysseyMosaic

    @OdysseyMosaic

I do have to very much agree with you that the sequence with Zola was integral to the film. He was most certainly setting Cap and Natasha in a proverbial 'canned hunt' by the missiles sent by Hydra to their location, and so 'Computer' Zola seemingly blabbering on as he did was the 'stall' for his verbose but necessary exposition to eliminate them both (and the base for that matter). And it served to drop the bomb that Stark Sr. was murdered, (and I have to wonder if they will ever have Tony let in to that fact by Cap onscreen). Can I admit, I just hate Zola's voice...to me it's nails/chalkboard effect, but the actor does him so well! To add: Watching 'CapAm2' on DVD, on the commentary, it's interesting that the Russo brothers referred to Steve/Cap, not Bucky, as *the* Winter Soldier...though in all the advertising and whatnot we are led to believe it is the other way around! It's a mirror reverse effect in a way, what are your thoughts on this?

I really like your reviews - for the most part you say exactly what I am thinkng and feeling, even if I don't necessarily know how to put it into words myself. (For instance, I watched your Fan4stick review yesterday and I was actually crying with laughter) And I do really like this review as well, but there is just one point that I struggle to agree with you on - that is that you refer to Winter Soldier as a villain. I understand that it is what he is supposed to be in this movie, but I personally have not been able to view him as that at all. You said that they had made this villain relatable and made us sympathise with him which is what makes him so different from basically any other villain in the franchise, except for Loki really. But that is precisely why I cannot see him as one. Everyone else is just evil, and they do evil things to advance their evil goals. Bucky, on the other hand, basically has no will of his own - it does come through in the movie, but that it when he is actually doing good-ish things. To me, this is similar to Jessica Jones being controlled by the Purple Man, or even to where the avengers are controlled by Scarlett Witch, to a certain extent. I could never really move past him as a hero in the first Captain America - after that he is basically stripped of his humanity and in the end of Winter Soldier and in Ant-man end credit he is struggling to get it back. That is exactly what makes him a hero in my eyes, and so I don't think that he has ever really crossed into that 'being a villain' territory at all.

I understand your view on the Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver scene. But originally in the comics their powers are not created by Loki's staff. When that officer says "The Age of Miracles is upon us" refers to the birth of the two children of Magneto. Because of the rights to X-Men's Marvel they can't use the term 'mutant' or 'Magneto' but if the creative team find any other way to include a small reference will be great!!

For that reason I don't mind if the staff is the source of their power, because the staff was given to loki by the aliens (I have no idea how to spell their actual name) which means it could have potential abilities we aren't aware of. I don't think the films should take so literally from comics anyway, it makes them too predictable, treat it as non canon and enjoy it :)

girayne I mean don't treat it as canon to whatever story everyone is basing this on, because yeah, it's it's own canon. But everyone is acting like it has to follow canon in whichever comic they like the most.

They don't get their powers from the staff.Loki's staff has the mind gem and HYDRA is using it to subdue the twins. The whole point of introducing these 2 characters is to introduce people who are BORN with powers, not people who get powers.

Hallucinogen X exactly, it makes sense they will be "evil" at first because they are controlled by Hydra through the scepter. Eventually they will joing the team when Ultron materializes and starts tuning against Hydra in the process. Enter the Avengers

couldn't agree more with this review Chris ! Really enjoyed this one, winter soldier is one of the best villains I saw in the last years. By the way, definitely check out 'Snowpiercer' also starring Chris Evans, this one didn't came out long ago, but flew under the radar and it's a real gem, if you see this one , it will definitely be in your top 10 of 2014, it blew me away!

Does anyone else hate Pierce just because he hit Bucky? Every time I see that shot, I just...gah. Jerk. If I didn't care about damaging my screen, I would punch his face every time it showed up. On another note, I think you should have included how professional they made the Winter Soldier. Every time he shows up...except when he's being an amnesiac, of course...he's just so practical. No battle cries, no nothing. Whenever he kills anyone, he's very quick, very precise, very practical. He's fast, but he's also very unhurried...if that makes sense. And then, of course, he gets all confused with his loyalties, and gets very unstable. Also, I love that moment on the bridge, right after Nat cracks WS's sunglasses, and then he takes them off and just whips around and starts shooting without even looking to see if she moved since she shot him last. "You just broke my sunglasses, woman! Do you know how much those things cost?! Not that they pay me, of course..."

I really want to understand why everyone loves it SO much, for me it was a 7.5/10 at best and the thing that stands out to me the most is the action scenes. I do not understand people saying it is better than the avengers and the dark knight, I'm not against it I just don't understand it.

13:32 in regards to Sebastian Stan taking over as Cap. In the scene under the bridge when Cap and TWS are fighting, TWS gets a hold of Cap's shield. Cap looks at him and then TWS looks down at the shield and there's one shot where it's almost like he's trying it on. Then he throws it back at Cap. I loved that moment.

I really liked the movie, especially the ending scene where the hydra agents are being arrested and trouble man playing in the background. it was so cool, felt very much like a classic crime thriller.

The whole right hand man thing with Falcon is a pretty interesting interpretation bit that's also just what we say in the Military when we're coming from behind while running.
