Subverting Expectations is the stupidest thing happening in film. There is literally no reason to get invested in these movies because of that. Also this isnt a 'Damn good movie'. It isnt bad or good. It's a mediocre mess.

    I think the film shines when it does the "in Carol's head" scenes. Those were the most visually and thematically interesting parts. When the Skrulls are looking at her memories and rewinding and stuff that was really well done, IMO.

  • @_Feanor_.

    @_Feanor_.

    5 жыл бұрын

    But a small problem with that is that it separates the audience from the character. Because we are shown and know what's going on with her past long before she does. It's like if in the Bourne series early on we get shown his past instead of finding out and piecing it together with the character. That can pull some people out of it, because they already know and are just waiting for the character to catch up and are not that invested when the character finally does so. Not everyone will care about that little detail equally of course. Just thought I point it out. I honestly think even if they had done that differently and pushed the audience reveal back, it wouldn't have mattered that much. The movie was pretty mediocre either way. I felt no reason to care for her character from what the story provided me or her connection with her former life and her female flight partner (don't want to call her a wingman). You gotta do more than show some 1 minute clip of them together in 1989 for me to care about that. Wonder Woman was the better done movie as far as female superhero leads go. Maybe even the Electra movie.

    Watch Captain Marvel and make up your own mind, don't just settle for reviews. I saw Captain Marvel and was entertained and walked away thinking it was pretty good. Was it perfect? No, it wasn't, but there are aspects that worked better for me than they apparently did for Chris, and that is fine. I myself enjoyed the last fight scene and though the conflict and themes of the film were surface level, it's a topic I think that isn't touched upon as competently as it was for Captain Marvel. Civil War attempted to tackle it in a way, but the punch was really mitigated by the lack of consequences. Although you don't see any grave consequences in Captain Marvel, the implied consequences are pretty dark. They also could've developed Carol more and made her a fully fleshed out character, but unlike Jeremy I wouldn't say she's devoid of character entirely. She has some good character moments.

    I've seen a lot of people criticizing the movie for Larson's performance and the character of Danvers. I got the sense that her general lack of emotion was intentional. Danvers has just been trained as a Kree warrior for the last six years, after all and we even hear Yon-Rogg telling her early on that "There's nothing more dangerous to a warrior than emotion". I imagine it would take some time to unlearn that kind of emotional training. That being said, I do think her character arc was pretty weak and I agree with you on a number of points, Chris. I really liked the banter and interplay between Danvers and Fury. I'm a sucker for fish out of water stories so I also really loved those aspects of Danvers' time on Earth. I thought it was mediocre for a Marvel movie, but still decent when compared to movies in general.

    @@IlMisterlI I agree with you there - she definitely showed more emotion than the other Kree did, especially with her sarcasm. But just because she's more emotional than the actual Kree (given her heritage) doesn't mean she was capable of expressing the full range of typical human emotion in appropriate circumstances. The more time she spent on Earth and the more interactions she had with other humans as the film progressed, the less rigid she became. I don't think it was a perfect way to show it, but I do think it was an intentional writing/character choice.

    Poxow I felt the same way. The flaws are so easily identifiable, especially in comparison to a lot of other films in the MCU. Yet, I found it more entertaining than about half of the MCU films. It’s weird. My theory is that the MCU itself is such a strong, well-oiled machine that it flat-out carried the whole movie. In other words, I was entertained because I wanted to see what would happen next as it relates to the broader MCU. I think this is both a good and bad thing. It’s a good thing because it shows just how great the MCU is, and makes even a mediocre film still very entertaining. It’s a bad thing because it helps cover-up an otherwise mediocre film. Regardless, I won’t question Feige at this point. I assume the “mediocre” aspects of the Captain Marvel character herself, as portrayed in this film, are mostly intentional, and will be play just fine into her character arc in the sequels. She’s very similar to Captain America in that regard. His characterization wasn’t fleshed out in his first solo film either; we had no idea what they would do with his character after only seeing his first solo film. It took The Winter Soldier to really understand what his character arc could really be, and another 4-5 films just to go through and complete that arc! Now, none of this excuses the mediocre aspects of the Captain Marvel film that aren’t about her own characterization, such as the inconsistent tone and boring fight sequences. But I think we should take a wait-and-see approach with her character arc.

    (Spoiler alert) Its one of those movies where you feel like youre being pushed to see how great she is vs showing it through character (which she completely lost as soon as she went to earth). It diminished the value of the "standing up" scene which is truly too bad bc it couldve been more meaningful in the character development (from being knowingly bound by a trusty worthy male role model to finding out it was a cover up and should be feeling more betrayed before she gets angry from it)

    Yeah. It's very lacking on emotional moments which almost any marvel movies have. If Carol really is attached to Mar-Vell, that scene where Mar-Vell was shot wasn't impactful at all. I was disappointed. And with those twists, with the material of skrulls i think they underdevelop it. It can be better.

    I think the performance of Captain Marvel fits with the characterization of having amnesia and being brainwashed into a super soldier. There's no time to show real emotion, no time for anything beyond surface level humor until the mission is over, until this thing, whatever it is, is settled and I have time and peace to really sort through this. This even makes sense as Anger problems seem common in people that feel they have to repress their emotions much of the time.

(Seriously, though, great, art-focused review. Less seriously, I look forward to subscribing to a service that prevents the service from opening bank accounts in my own name. They solved a problem I didn't know I had. )

    Bruce Achterberg Sorry, i’d argue she has just as much range as Chris Evans. Both very subtle in their emotions, small smiles, serious all the time and dont get emotional unless they truly are suffering or even Scarlett Johanssen gives black widow a very subtle performance because shes been a killer since her teens. I remember Denvers getting excited getting her detainers back, roaring at a skrull, screaming she is confused and smirking allot to Fury and geniunly felt sorry for all she had done to the Skrull but didnt burst into tears because she is a soldier.. none of them are wooden just subtle and not over the top. Though if you find her wooden thats fine, your oppinion and we all have what we think is great acting and not.

    Perhaps my biggest criticism with this film is that it left me with a lot of unanswered questions. -Why was she able to absorb the core power? -Is she Kree or is she human? - if she’s Kree why did she have red blood? Why did she have to be injected with blue blood? -Is Kree like an immigrant’s planet and does the blue blood make you a certified Kree? -Why did the Skrulls invade multiple planets if they needed one home planet to stay in? Was that a lie by the Intelligence too? - What is the Intelligence anyway? Just off the top of my head. Some of the questions might have been answered in the film, but the storytelling confused me enough to be left puzzled in the end.

  • @FaultAndDakranon

    @FaultAndDakranon

    allisworld1isme The story reveals most of these questions, slowly over time, in order to show how she’s been gaslighted. And yes it’s confusing, gaslighting is traumatically confusing. -she’s human. She got a transfusion from Yog person because it helped control her, and therefore control her power. Now she has blue blood. -Kree is an empire. Likely multiple species integrated from all over (also why she’s super comfortable on an ‘alien’ planet) -the Skrulls fled in every direction in hope that some would make it to safety. It’s a typical persecution/refugee story, not supposed to be a mystery. -The Intelligence is supposed to represent an implacable inscrutable authority. It’s supposed to be mysterious. I don’t know why the energy of the Tesseract didn’t kill her. Unless it’s sentient or something. I mean, it’s an Infinity Stone, soo... super super powerful. I was very impressed with how they tied up every thread and kept her motivations and actions believable at every stage of the revelations about her past. See it a few more times, and hopefully it will become clear. It’s really a beautifully made story. (I’ve only seen it once so far, and no I never read the comics before seeing the movie, I just was in tune with the storytelling)

    Lyricology 101 After seeing the movie, I honestly don't know where Chris is coming from. Firstly, I didn't find Brie Larson's performance bland or boring at all and especially because the movie explains it over and over why she has to be the way she is. She was taught to feel nothing. To hide her emotions. Its drilled down into her conscious and subconscious. There is one moment of clarity where she finds out who she truly is that we finally see her let go and allow herself to feel. Secondly, I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. There were times where it was a little wobbly but nothing deserving a C. Personally, I liked this movie more than I liked Wonder Woman. I thought Wonder Woman was a tad bit derivative and predictable. And I wasn't a fan of the ending at all. But Captain Marvel had twists and turns and they managed to pull it off better than Wonder Woman did. The story isn't good vs bad. And its certainly not about how powerful she is. She gets beaten up pretty bad in the movie. As for all this agenda you people are so triggered about? Whether you are a guy or a gal, you can relate to her story. There is something in her journey we can all relate to regardless of age, gender or race. I honestly think all this hatred was uncalled for and downright immature. Lastly, I love Chris and his reviews but his review of this movie was a misstep and a misjudgement.
