Everything you said is absolutely correct and almost word for word what I tell people about my two dogs. I have been down with a back issue for almost two weeks and my one GS never left my side, she knows I was down and would lay over top of me, I guess she thought that was a way to protect me. She is laying across my legs right now and around 7 tomorrow morning she will come up and lay beside me and lick my face until wake up and scratch her head for a minute or two.

I have been a GSD parent for the last 38 years. Now I am a father of the 4th M GSD NAME ZUES. His 18 mounts old Poppy and his already 92 LB and lean his a big bone dog and very powerful, super intelligent and loyal beyond believe, HE ALMOST HATES WATER BUT WHEN MY DAUGHTER JUMPED IN THE POOL AND SHE WAS ACTING LIKE SHE WAS HAVING TROUBLE SWIMMING AND LET HERE SELF TO SINK TO THE BOTTOM HE WAS SO WORRIED THAT REGARDLESS OF NOT BEING A BIG FAN OF THE Water he jumped in the pool and start paddling to the bottom of the pool and started pushing my daughter towards the surface with his. Head trying to stay underneath her and pushing her towards the top it was an unbelievable sight to see. I love all dogs but after having 4 GSD’s I just can’t go with another breed of dog.

I agree. But there are pros and cons with all breeds of dogs of which have conveniently been left out of this video. I received my first German Shepherd in my early 20s and I’ve had German Shepherd‘s ever since until this very day that I’m now in my mid 60s. There are serious considerations that need to be addressed when considering a German Shepherd. And like a box of chocolates you never quite know what kind of German shepherd you are going to end up with both physically and mentally.

I have rescued three GSD adults, all amazing dogs. Incredibly intelligent, the bond is unbreakable. Just an all round perfect dog whether you want to hike, run or watch Netflix, they want to do it all with you. Feeling down? Your best friend will be there for you, they instinctively sense your moods and are there for you. They are so goofy and funny, they are like a stand up comedian waiting for you to laugh at their jokes, except they are always spot on funny!

This speaks to me! As I'm writing this, mine is curled up at my feet. Wherever I go he follows and when I'm not home, he doesn't do anything because I'm pretty much his entire life. His bond with me is so strong and everybody falls in love with him regardless of how little them might like dogs. I love German shepherds and don't you agree that they're the most stunning and gorgeous breed in existence? They come in so many beautiful coat patterns like panda, blue, white, black, fawn. and my favorite, Isabella!

Though your comment is dead on the mark you have been very fortunate as this is not always the case. I’ve had various German Shepherd‘s throughout the last 50 or so years of my life. They’re not all what their made out to be as some of them can be extremely vicious, and hardheaded and have a mind of their own, and thus can lash out at others unexpectedly. And do so even if they have no past history of such behavior.

It needs to be said; you need to commit to this dog as much as they will, assuredly, commit to you. Walk them EVERY DAY, give them boundaries and lovingly discipline them because they can be smart enough to manipulate you. They need training and consistency and they should sleep in the same room with you.

I've had 2, Murphy was my first dog and he was brilliant, very protective of the family, when we'd go for a walk on the prom he'd circle around us in a perimeter, not at all aggressive to the family, you could even pick up his food and move it while he was eating and he'd just follow you, would not hesitate to defend the family from intruders. Sam was my third dog, very gentle and loving... but the lazy bastard probably wouldn't even raise his head at an intruder, the least aggressive dog I've ever had.

I've had 3 GSDs over the past 13 years, been a handler for two of them. They're the best breed, but they are like dealing with a toddler holding an AK47. Even if they are protection dogs, you have to treat them and train them well, lest they become skittish or mean [rarely any in between]. They NEED a job. Something consistent and mentally/physically stimulating. One last thing: an old German Shepherd is the pinnacle of love, even when they are nearing the end of their life. They served you their entire life without question or self interest. YOU OWE IT TO THEM to give them a good ending.

These breeds are banned in various communities throughout the US and for good reason. Insurance companies demand you declare If you have any of these dogs on your home owner’s insurance policy. If we hide dangerous dog breeds from our insurance company, we will be liable for all money owed resulting from our dog causing serious injury or even death. These breeds have a history of suddenly turning on the family, even killing the children. They are like a 45 loaded caliber gun that can go off by accident without any warning. I should know as I have been a German Shepherd owner for about 52 years now. Yes they are lovable, Loyal, and very protective and exceptionally intelligent. But they also can be a very dangerous dog to have in your possession that’s not all German Shepherd‘s have the same temperament. There’s a Darkside to these breeds that most people just will not talk about online. Your comment is an Example of people who avoid talking about the dangerous side of these breeds. Or a quite possibly you just don’t know about it?

While I love all dogs, when I think of a true dog, a dog that represents all dogs, a German shepherd is what comes to mind. If you show them love they'll return that love unconditionally and lay down their life to protect you. I love my boy more than I can can convey. The only downside is you don't have them for very long but the time you do have is worth the pain of saying goodbye.

So many more adjectives I could give to this wonderful breed! They are problem solvers, they can determine what is good, and what is not good, bad. No other breed compares to the German shepherd dog. Caveats - if you are not an active person, do NOT get a GSD. They need lots of exercise, they need someone who can spend time with them every day, and they need mental stimulation as well. If you want a dog to just lie on the couch with you - do NOT get a GSD. A 20 minute walk once a day is NOT ENOUGH for this breed. I take my GSD for a minimum one hour hike every morning - not a walk, a hike. In the afternoon, we do a 15-20 minute play session or do some training, and often also a short walk in the evening. This is like minimum. a couple of times a week we do a longer hike.

I absolutely do agree that a GSD is 'the best dog for just about everybody' I have and have had many over the years. You have to have the right personality - someone who can stand their ground in terms of discipline for example. If you let a GSD think that they can do as they like, you are in big trouble.

I have a gsd mix and I can definitely say that german shepherds are by far my favorite breed! I grew up with a german shepherd and have known and loved many of them. I will say that they can develop a habit of barking at everything. Mine barks at people just walking across the street. Please if someone knows how to rid of that habit I would love to hear your advice! but gsds are known for barking at everything. He is very protective and will defend anyone if he feels like they're at risk. I definitely feel safe with him. As a teenaged girl, he is by far the best dog to protect me because he looks very friendly and adorable but can pack a powerful punch (his other half is malmute so no surprise). He is not intimidating in the least until you have pissed him off. although that takes quite a lot as he is tolerant and amazing with everyone unless he finds you sketchy in which case I will find you sketchy because he is very trustworthy. He is bonded to everyone in my family very closely but I gotta say, he is my dog. He is always around me and gets sad when I'm not home even if everyone else is. He depends on me and I definitely cannot leave him without my company for more than a day because he doesn't wanna do anything without me. VERY loyal!

They are my absolute favourite breed, but i wouldn't say they are suitable for everyone though. They need lots of excercise, playtime and mental stimulation, so if you're not willing to do more than a 30-min walk and then call it a day, you might not want one. You don't need to go to extreme lengths, but they can get anxious if they're bored and start doing smth unwanted like destroying your furniture or bark constantly. It's a big and strong dog, so if they're aggressive they can get quite dangerous. They're not made for hot weather so it's best if you live in some relatively cold part of the world. And they shed, A LOT. They're not called german shedders for no reason lol. But with that said, they're the freaking best!

It takes a lot of diligence and persistence to create a good GSD if you don't plan on spending most of your time with your dog they are not the dog for you because you or somebody else or somebody else's dog is going to get hurt

⚠️ The cons to German Shepards have been completely omitted in this report. I received my first German shepherd when I was in my early 20s. I’m now in my mid 60s and I am on my last German shepherd I will ever own. If you are seriously considering a German Shepherd then my review is a must read before you decide on a German Shepard. It’s for good reason why both the military and the army go through batches of GSD (German Shepard dogs) to find just one that’s truly outstanding. By no means are all GSD equal. Additionally there are serious health issues that are common with GSD, with hip dysplasia and swayback being the most common ones. Though I’ve dearly loved all my GSD through the years, understand they can be very hard headed, and overly protective despite there is no danger present. This leads to needless nuisance barking, and acting vicious towards others who pose no threat. My current German shepherd barks at people that are over 200 yards away thinking that they are some kind of threat. Though I have never been able to train out this instinct in my German shepherd, I have however been able to get it under better control but not all the way. Rather than a sudden loud vicious bark, now my German shepherd does it more quietly and or simply starts growling instead of outright barking all the time. This quickly becomes a real nuisance. Especially when you turn your dog out into the fenced backyard to enjoy themselves, and they can visibly see people really far away. This becomes a very real and a very very very serious problem. As this will get the game warden called to your house frequently if you don’t figure out how to get this under some kind of control. Not to mention Sunday mornings people are trying to sleep in a little bit, but you still need to let your dog out to use the bathroom. Because when a German Shepherd starts barking, their bark is so loud you can hear them many many houses away. So if you live within the city and you have a big dog that is frequently very loud, eventually you’re going to have a knock on your door from the local game warden. Since it’s impossible to change the natural instinct of an overly protective dog, a German Shepherd can and will suddenly lash out at somebody unexpectedly. Usually this only happens when you bring outsiders into your home, including family members that don’t live with you. Some German shepherds will lash out at anybody and everybody in or outside of the home no matter where you are at. So if you do not make a point to socialize them really well, then this can become a highly dangerous ongoing problem that you’ll never be able to fix. That’s when you will need a muzzle for your dog, and your dog will fight you most every time when you try to put it on. Since German shepherds have the power and strength to cause serious injury to people, you have to make sure that your dog does not Inadvertently attack somebody needlessly in the event you end up with an overly aggressive overly protective German Shepherd. And I have run into my fair share of overly protective German shepherds over the years. They are more common than you think. While this video makes German shepherds out to be like a Walt Disney type dog, the real reality is that not all German shepherds are equal. They’re like a box of chocolate, you never know what you’re going to get. This is why home insurance companies want to know if you have a German Shepherd of other other dangerous dogs in your home living with you. I thought I had the perfect German Shepherd. About two years into my current German Shepherd he went to the vets for a routine check up. Completely and absolutely unexpectedly my German Shepherd suddenly turned on everyone in the back office where the dog was being examined. I had to be called in to the room to take control of my German Shepherd so they could finish the exam. I literally had to ask the personal in the room to leave for a few minutes so I could get my German shepherd to calm down. Never ever before had my German shepherd shown aggression towards anybody until that very moment. He caught everyone including me completely offguard. Thankfully no one got seriously hurt. The Veterinarian only suffered a minor bite to their hand which required first aid to stop the bleeding. I always look at German shepherds as though they are a loaded gun. You have to be extremely careful because you never know when it might accidentally go off. No matter how sweet German Shepherd might be, there’s always the unexpected that happens when you least expect it. Your German shepherd can instantly become vicious towards one or more people with no rhyme or reason. SO always be on your guard and ready to take control of your German Shepard. If your German Shepherd does not have a collar around their neck this can be extremely difficult to do. Like with any other dog there are always pros and cons with any breed. Because the German shepherd is a relatively big dog they have lots of muscle power which can quickly bring serious harm to an undeserving victim unexpectedly. If I knew all of this before hand, I would never have chosen to own German Shepherds. Yes they are very loving and extremely loyal dogs. Their highly unique intimidating look is one of the draws that people get caught up in that causes them to choose a German Shepherd as their own dog. Despite German shepherd puppies are as cute as cute can be, German shepherd pups quickly outgrow that cute puppy look in less then a year. My advice? If you’re still hell-bent on getting a German Shepherd then I strongly advise you to interact with your dog in a positive way every single day. With daily obedience training being a top priority. You need to train yourself to train your dog properly, and learn how it’s done in a proper manner. My dogs will not break the plane of a door without my permission. Not even a cage door. This is extremely important as to best prevent your dog from suddenly charging through a doorway to go after something or someone. But sadly when your dog is hardheaded, they’re still going to do whatever it is they want to do regardless of how well you trained them. Setting aside German shepherds are amazingly loving and loyal, they have a way of expressing how much they love you that is absolutely adorable, while at the same time can be a pain in the ass, constantly demanding your affection. This will cause them to get under your feet all too often, and can actually interfere with your ability to safely walk forward without tripping over the dog. I have not been able to train this out of my current German Shepherd. Constantly my German Shepherd is in my way when I walk forward. Even demanding affection by rubbing up against you like a cat. This might sound adorable at first, but German Shepherds typical weight is well over 100 pounds. So when a German shepherd pushes up against you like a cat, this can and will cause you to lose your balance. So if you have balance issues, a German shepherd can be a bad choice. Not to mention it takes some real strength to hold your German shepherd back when they see something that they want to go after. In reality dogs are animals and animals can be very unpredictable. There is no way to train out animal instinct. Not sure if I would if I could. And if your dog is a really big dog like a German Shepherd, as mine is a 125 pounds, you could quickly get yourself into a very serious situation when your dog attacks someone when you least expect it. And don’t think it won’t. However in the last years of a German shepherd’s life they mellow out, and they don’t pose as much of a threat to others anymore. Though I will never own another German Shepherd ever again, I don’t have any regrets either. The memories with my German Shepherd dogs are as precious as they come. If you insist on having a big dog, may I suggest getting a good old fashion Collie dog as they are both big, awesome looking, and have a big bark to protect you but they rarely ever bite anyone. And there intelligence is through the roof! I wish I had collies instead of German Shepherd through the years, but I didn’t because the last two German shepherds that came into my life were actually unexpected gifts from my wife. It was more of the kind of dog she wanted rather than the kind of dog I wanted. So this was her way of having German Shepherd‘s in our lives. However if you are looking for a dog to protect you that has the power and ability to take down a human being, keep in mind that you might end up with a German shepherd that can be very to extremely vicious towards all others. If that happens you’ll have to have a separate room or extra large dog cage to secure your German Shepherd in when you have guest over. In short; German Shepherd‘s are a huge responsibility that require lots of discipline from the owner to achieve the best kind of outcome between the dog and master. And can eat nearly all of a fifty pound bag of dog food monthly. And most likely, you’ll have to be the one to give your GSD regular baths, as they might not let anyone else do it. Additionally, bathing your own dog also helps to build an extra strong bond with your four legged buddy. Good luck!

Reading your comment was such a breath of fresh air - truthful, practical and balanced. I am the owner of a 16 month old female GSD; like yourself, she was my wife's preference, not mine. Even though I love having her, she is, and has been a challenge for me personally. All the issues that you mentioned I have experienced - the need for attention, the physical strength ( pulling when on the leash is tough going!), reactive barking towards other dogs etc. However, she is very good with people - particularly with children - even though I am always wary. One other difficulty I find is the negative perceptions of other dog owners - they visibly avoid her when out and about. This can be stressful when trying to exercise her. I find her constant barking at other dogs to be the main problem that I have with her at the moment; when in the car she barks at them, in the park the same. And, as you said, her bark is loud and frightening for some. Yet, when she does get up and close to another dog she appears friendly and playful. Hopefully, like you said, she will grow out of this behaviour with age. Thanks again for giving your experience - I thought I was doing something wrong. Regards from Ireland!

@@tombyrne7784 - You bet Tom! I'm an Irishman born in the US. I had hope to visit my homeland before I got to far up in my years, I see now that's not in the cards. However, my Irish blood that runs through me greatly influences the musician side of me. So last year, I wrote my first Irish style jig. Using music recording software that I first started using in the mid 1980s that I continually upgrade over the years, allowed me to put the entire Irish musical piece together myself without the help from anyone else. And since the music software (Logic X) allows me to create singers, I did not need to find singers to help me out with the project. After working on the song for about 5 days, it was complete. I wrote this in the old world Irish style. It continuously builds all the way to the end. With that said, the link below take you to my Irish jig. Since I've not had any reviews from Ireland itself, I don't know if I might have missed the mark. I added some amazing footage from around the world to keep it interesting. Note: I was certain that it would be a big hit online, but it has gotten very little attention despite the quality production and catchy sound. Where as some of my other works have received millions of plays. Thank you Tom for your thoughtful response. Cheers from America! kzread.info/dash/bejne/aHiMtruaaLffcZs.html

A very detailed and enlightening comment. Basically, I've never had a German Shepherd but I have had a Belgian Shepherd and there is a reason they are called "Working Dogs." They NEED something to do in a way that is responsibly trained into them. I'm not saying they have to be police dogs or actually herd sheep, but a neglected German Shepherd (not abused, just neglected) is a frustrated and potentially dangerous one. Also, socializing a German Shepherd puppy with both people and other dogs on a regular basis is of the greatest importance, until their personality finally "gels." PS - I say all that with the caveat that not all German Shepherds are the same, like you mentioned. But it is good policy nevertheless.

Great write up and very accurate. Socialization as a pup is very important for this breed due to their protective nature, but most I have encountered know how to determine a real threat, therefore very few instances of German Shepherd attacks compared to other breeds. Also, you said your GSD was 125 lbs? That's way over the breed standard of 65-80lbs, are you sure he isn't mixed with another large breed dog that may be the cause of some of these issues? Are you sure he's not a King Shepherd? There are differences between the two.

@@tombyrne7784 My female GSD is exactly the same. The bark is terrifying for people and she appears that she wants to rip other dogs apart but if she gets the chance to get next to them she is playful as anything. What I have noticed is that if my brother comes on a walk with his dog with me, she diverts her attention to his dog on the walk and it calms her down completely. She hasn't ever bit anyone but she does bark as people. Children are the worst because they run over to stroke her and I worry that one day they will spook her and she will bite them.

I had 7 dogs troug my life. 2 English pointers (since granddad and my father are hunters), 1 German Hunting Terrier, 2 Shih tzus and 1 German Shepherd and 1 Malinois (Belgian Shepherd). And the best dog i had was the German Shepherd, it was so fun having him and i spent a lots of time with that dog. He had the right balance between everything, he liked to cuddle but not too too much, he was at times indenpendent but wanted company aswell. He listened MOST of the time, sometimes he wont but with a bit of paitence he will listen to you. He was really caucious towards strangers, i remember once a guy wanted to pet my Shepherd over the fence as soon as he came with his hand over the fence my dog snapped really aggressively towards his hand almost biting him :D The only thing that i didnt like was that he hated cats as hell and used to escape our garden when he wants to mate... He killed about 6 stray cats in front of our House aswell.. He was for 6 years our companion then he was bitten in the fields by multiple Ticks and died soon after :(
