From my experience, my dad got me a female German Shepherd as a puppy when I was about 7 years old and she was beyond AMAZING. She protected me like no other dog. She knew whenever I was scared or sad. She was quick to protect me against new people and was quick to cuddle me whenever I was in my room crying. By far one of the best dogs ever. Her name was Boques and she lived 15 years ❤️

I just got a male GSD after losing my 16 year old Border Collie. He is soooo dumb by comparison. My old boy learned new things right up until the end in just a few tries. This new boy hasn’t even learned “walk” or “snack” yet. He’s not deaf. He has figured out the bells on the door and which direction to go when I point when he gets himself tangled when he is on his run.

The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". The only place I thought I'd have the most problems I was treated the better than anywhere was the airport. Any airport has been the best. When I buy tickets I have to call by phone for buljhead seating and to give the heads up I'll be on the flight. They usually will give me the row because of his size. We also skip the security line everyone else stands in and don't gotta remove shit like shoes.

I just lost my female G-shepherd of 12 yrs, she weighed about 85 Lbs. She was easy to train and she loved her frisbee and Kong ball. It was beautiful watching her fly through the air to catch either item in her younger years. We had to put her down last wk due to hip dysphasia that came on very fast. Due to covid, I was repeatedly asked from one vet after next to drop my dog off at their office and just drive away and they would take care of the euthanasia process. The idea of this killed me, this dog was so faithful to me, always by my side and I couldn’t imagine not holding her at the end. She was in so much pain though, I had to what was necessary in the end. I’ve never had a panic attack ever in my lifetime until it was time to say goodbye to my faithful friend. When they came to take her away I nearly passed out and I could hardly breathe bc I was crying uncontrollably. Thankfully someone in the office took pity on me and allowed me to hold my beloved pet until she took her last breath. If this happens to you, don’t except it. I can’t believe they would ask anyone who has had a long term pet to just dump them off and drive away. It’s wrong in so many ways especially when that animal gave you nothing but unconditional love.

There are many places to go these days that are less like animal ERs and more like Hospice. If there’s a next time find a place like that. I did in 2019 and I’m SO glad. They were so kind and compassionate. They give you your own room with a couch a comfortable blanket for the dog. Even a box of tissue in the room. It’s decorated to feel comforting and they get the IV ready and then give you time alone until you’re ready and have a button on the wall to buzz them in. I’m glad you insisted and got to spend your last moments together. It’s incredibly hard but your pup deserved to be with you when it was time to go. Very sorry for your loss, it’s hard to imagine how difficult it would be but shows what incredible companions they are and why they’re known as man’s best friend. Best wishes.

I'm very sorry for your loss. For future reference and for other GSD owners, exercises or activities that include jumping should be limited to avoid things like Hip dysplasia or Elbow dysplasia, especially while the dog is growing. Supplements, or foods, that contain glucosamine and chondroitin can also help.

I think they pet them too much nowadays so they dont show their true potential because German Shepherds are really guard dogs. In Jamaica my grandmother had one and she would send him out with me to look after me on long walks and he certainly guarded me with his life. We had a male GSD that was 110 lbs, lean. He was a rescue, luckily not violently abused but the original owners heavily neglected him and kept him tied up until he ran away on multiple occasions at which point the local shelter took custody of him and he ended up with us. He was magnificent. Intelligent, protective and loved to be at the centre of our family gatherings. Lived till 13 and left such a positive mark on our lives. We are thinking of getting a female GSD puppy now, so thanks for sharing your experience.

My female GSD served in army for years and was the most disciplined dog I’ve ever met. Yes, a bit slow in reaction, but didn’t affect the performance whatsoever. More so, she was more maternal towards my other dogs and trained them out naturally. As opposed to male, she didn’t need a ‘dominant’ figure to tame her and was less interested in lurking around seeking adventures.

I grew up in the 70's with a female German Shepherd. She was not much of a guard dog and was probably one of the sweetest German Shepherd's you would ever meet. The only problem is our backyard was about 1/2 acres and we had two dogs, two cats and two kids (so she had company) she would always scale our 6' fence to get out. The sad thing is my mom re-married and my step-father didn't like dogs so when my brother and I were visiting my grandfather for the summer, my mom took her to an animal shelter and left her there....she was 12 years old so she probably was never adopted. That is probably why I have always felt that when I get a pet, it's for life....animals should not be disposable when they don't fit your situation anymore.

I had the same experience with my German shepherd female. She was so quick to learn and willing to learn. She was also very protective of me. She’s gone now from old age. Best dog I ever had. I’ve since had a series of mixed breed rescue dogs that all seem to have a great deal of some kind of hound in them. They have all been very amusing in that hound kind of way that they have but not easy to train. My latest rescue is part pug, part beagle and part something else, about 35 pounds, male, keeps me laughing with his strange behavior and enjoys a strict routine, mostly sleeps. When he is up he focuses on food and how can he get more and he enjoys going for walks.

We have had two female GSDs - first was a rescue - Zara. She was amazing and so gentle! Our second was Bella, who we had from a puppy. She was as mad as a bag of frogs but so very loveable and loved to learn new things. And she looked very like Lucy! Unfortunately She died very suddenly in June 2021 (aged 8 yrs) and we have been so devastated at losing her that we can't even contemplate getting another at this stage. Your video has made me smile. Lucy is a beautiful example of what a German Shepherd should be but as you rightfully said, you have to put in the work. Thank You!

I'm not an animal expert either, however, as someone who was raised with a German Shepherd male dog, I can confirm that the males are more stubborn and like to choose one person, which was my dad. Our German Shepherd was a great guard dog and a wonderful judge of character, and lived for eleven years, which is pretty old for such a medium sized dog. We are about to get our female. She’s also a West German Showline descendant. Her entire lineage is traced back to the late 1800’s with pictures. We just got 2 kittens and want them to grow together. We lost our male German Shepard, Chuck Norris, in February this year. He was just shy of 15. He was also the runt and was a smaller male. Very smart dog. Scary smart at times, lol. Miss him desperately. We also lost our cat Boo Boo 3 weeks later. She was 16 1/2. Home was too empty and quiet. Miss them both so much. Lucy is beautiful and such a good girl. Thanks for making this. We have been waffling between a female (available now) or waiting for a male. The cancer issue. We never neutered Chuck. As a result he developed anal cancer. He was neutered at age 13. That stopped the progression, but he had a sore bottom at all times. Glad you brought this up, important to consider when to spay. Chuck well outlived his counterparts. He was nearly 15. Ours had no hip dysplasia. He remained active as his puppy stage. He started showing his age the last 6 months he was alive. He was our sweet boy.

I have a female GSD and she’s the sweetest girl ever ETA desexing at a young age has been studied to increase certain cancers and developmental joint disease. Also, the lack of hormones actually makes them taller, not smaller (but usually leaner). If we had a large colt at the horse farm I used to work at, we’d sometimes leave them intact longer to help slow down the upward growth to help avoid joint disease in the ones that grow tall too quickly.

For example: the other day I trained our youngest (2y) a new trick in about 15 minutes and she understood it from the get go. Our oldest "learned" that if she barks at people passing by that they "disappear". Once they learn something it's really hard (nearly impossible) to correct it. I was amazed to see how Lucy stayed this calm through the whole video. Very impressive!

6 years and counting with my Princess girl Best dog ever. German Shepherds are intelligent, brave, fearlessly authentic, sweet and protective. Training her was super easy and fun, they love to please and make the family happy. Lots of love, socializing, and playing. Socialize early. And a lot. My GSD girl protects my younger siblings with her life, and don’t get me started on my daughter. You can’t go wrong with a GSD!

This was the first "Lucy" video that I have seen. I also have a Female GSD. She weighs 76lbs but is fit and trim. Penelope is also larger than most females that I have been around. I prefer female dogs in general, I am 59 years old and have only owned 2 Male dogs. Intelligence is one of the remarkable traits of my Penelope, I am amazed at how fast she picks up on what I am training her to do. She is one of the most loving dogs I have ever had. People always say that certain breeds should be the only dogs in your home. I have had 2 female Akitas I always heard you can't have smaller dogs or animals while owning Akitas that has never been the case, I honestly think most troubles or problems stem from "weak" or "inexperienced" owners. I currently have 4 dogs a Pitbull, Chiuhauha, Poodle and GSD. They all get along they will sleep and eat together. My Poodle is 18 years old, blind in one eye limited vision in the other and she is very hard of hearing but she still plays and act goofy. My German Shepherd will herd her away from the pool, will stop to let the Poodle walk in front of her, enter the house first and will "take" the Poodle outside to go potty.

I had a female GS named Molly. She died about 2 months ago and it has been hard without her. She was trained to attack but only on command, besides that she was the sweetest and very very gentle with babies and kids. The reason why we trained her it was because we got our house broken into twice. This veterinary in specific recommended us a female GS. We got her when she was a puppy, we pay around $1,300 for her and they trained her and we spent a couple of thousands for her training which was very worth it at the end anyways. These are amazing dogs I would definitely get another but for now I’m not ready emotionally. 🥺

Getting weak on back legs now and has had anti inflammatories last few months. He was very youthful until his mate died at age 12yrs. They both swam weekly their whole lives and I think it helped keep them fit and well. If I could go back in time i think I would also feed raw food.

I've had 3 female and 2 male purebred German Shepherds and I have to agree with everything in this video. My males were a lot more aloof, which made them harder to train, but not bad. They just took more repetition and treats. Lol They seemed to get distracted more easily too. My females were easier to train and were the more protective of them all. They weren't as territorial as the males, they just seemed to pickup on things that were out of the ordinary and were way more observant of their surroundings. My last one was a "big boned" line, she weighed in at right around 100 lbs and was bigger than the rest. She could tell when someone was drinking alcohol or was buzzed, and she would shy away from them, but would keep her eyes on them. She had such an inate shepherding streak, she used to corral my young nieces and nephews when we would have family gatherings. Lol. My nephew was really scared of dogs the first time that he met my girl Libby. She was really calm with him and careful not to play too rough, and my nephew grew to adore her. When I get a bigger home, I am getting another shepherd. I've had dogs my whole life, but after my first shepherd, I was hooked. I've never had a more loyal, loving, protective dog and best friend, than my shepherds, especially the females.

I don't know who said it first but the quote "May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am" has real meaning after a GSD. No one will ever love you more or show more loyalty (if brought up well). My current girl, Sallie Sunshine, will be 13 years old in a few weeks and is still obsessed with me. She thinks that I am incredible. It's been an amazing adventure sharing my life with her.

@Marina NGUYEN Oh my...You are incredible and amazing also. Don't you know that? You are a child of the most High God. You are prized. I meant to compliment the breed. A GSD will give you love and loyalty that makes you feel you are the most important human in the world. I know exactly what my GSD thinks of me by her actions and I am just trying to live up to her expectations. Don't worry about my pride too much, I have two cats to remind me of how I'm not that great or special at all. LOL. Sending good vibes your way....
